Systems and methods are provided for analyzing isotopes of a gas from a wellbore to determine geological information associated with the wellbore. A drill device can be used to drill rocks or particles in a wellbore, which can cause a gas to be released within the wellbore. Fluid can be pumped into the wellbore as the drill bit drills the rocks or particles and the fluid, along with the gas released, can flow through the wellbore and to a surface of the wellbore. A gas detector can be positioned near the wellbore for detecting an amount of gas and a type of gas in the fluid and gas mixture and transmitting data about the amount and type of the gas to a computing device. The computing device can output data based on the amount and type of gas in the mixture for determining geological information about the wellbore.

A drilling method includes collecting survey data at a drilling site, and determining a waypoint or borehole path based on the survey data. The drilling method also includes sending the survey data to a remote monitoring facility that applies corrections to the survey data. The drilling method also includes receiving the corrected survey data, and automatically updating the waypoint or borehole path based on the corrected survey data.

Systems and methods for maintaining operation of gas sampling equipment utilized in oil and gas operations, wherein an isolation valve is deployed along a gas extraction conduit in order to isolate a gas analysis system from pressurized fluid that may be injected into the extraction conduit from a fluid delivery system. A parameter of the flow stream, such as a particular gas content or the presence of a bump gas, may be monitored. A change in the parameter may be indicative that debris is inhibiting fluid flow into the extraction conduit. When such a condition is suspected, gas sampling is suspended and the valve between the gas analysis system and the intake of the extraction conduit is closed. With the valve closed in order to protect the gas analysis system, a fluid is injected into the extraction conduit from the fluid delivery system.

A system for continuously circulating fluid in a wellbore includes a control system comprising a memory, a power source, and a user interface, along with a drill string subassembly having an inlet and an outlet, and defining a flow path from the inlet to the outlet. The conduit includes a lateral port to the flow path between the inlet and the outlet. The drill string subassembly also as a first valve that controls flow to the flow path from the lateral port and a second valve that controls flow to the flow path from the inlet. The drill string subassembly may also include a sensor that generates a fluid coupling signal responsive to a coupling between the lateral port and secondary fluid supply source, and includes a synchronous actuation member configured open the first valve and close the second valve in response to, for example, the fluid coupling signal.

Systems and methods are provided for determining a cure state of cement in a wellbore. A drill device can be used to drill cement in a wellbore. Contact between the drill device and the cement can cause friction or heat, which can produce a gas. A gas detector can be positioned near a wellbore for detecting an amount of gas and a type of gas produced by contact between the drill device and the cement in the wellbore. The cure state of cement in the wellbore can be determined based on the amount of gas and the type of gas detected.

Various embodiments include apparatus and methods to generate and use drillability exponents. Data acquired from downhole sensors can be used to determine drillability exponents. The drill exponents can be used in number of processes to enhance various features of a drilling operation. 5 Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

Fouling of or damage to an electromagnetic radiation-transparent window can preclude one from obtaining satisfactory images with an image acquisition unit, such as a camera. Certain types of environments may be particularly prone toward promoting fouling or damage, and manual cleaning or repair of an electromagnetic radiation-transparent window may be difficult in some circumstances. These issues may be particularly prevalent when imaging drill cuttings and other solids obtained from a wellbore due to the complex sampling environment in which these solids are often disposed. Wellhead imaging systems can comprise: a flow pathway extending from a wellbore; an electromagnetic radiation-transparent window external to the wellbore establishing optical communication with the flow pathway; an image acquisition unit in optical communication with the flow pathway via the electromagnetic radiation-transparent window; and a movable barrier that is also electromagnetic radiation-transparent and is disposed between the electromagnetic radiation-transparent window and the flow pathway.

Methods and systems for maintaining optical transparency during particle image acquisition

A method of mitigating undesired pressure variations in a wellbore due to movement of a well tool string in a well can include selectively decreasing and increasing fluid communication between sections of a wellbore on opposite sides of at least one well tool in the well tool string, the fluid communication being increased in response to detecting a threshold movement of the well tool string relative to the wellbore. A well tool string can include a well tool connected in the well tool string, and having an enlarged outer dimension relative to adjacent sections of the well tool string, a flow passage extending between the well tool's opposite ends, a sensor, and at least one flow control device which selectively permits and prevents fluid communication between the opposite ends via the flow passage, in response to an output of the sensor indicative of movement of the well tool string.

Mitigating swab and surge piston effects in wellbores

Methods and assemblies that can be used to orient a second pipe with respect to a first pipe in a wellbore are disclosed. The first pipe may be a casing string that includes one or more recessed latch couplings, and the second pipe may be a tubing string that includes one more complementary radially extendable latch keys that may be received within the latch couplings. The tubing string may include one or more switches associated with the latch keys that are actuated when the latch keys are received within the latch couplings. The actuation of the switches is communicated to an operator at the surface via control lines within the tubing string.

Methods and systems for orienting a tool in a wellbore

An apparatus and a system, as well as a method and an article, may include operating a positive displacement motor having a pair of output orifices including a selectably movable outer output orifice disposed proximate to a fixed inner output orifice. Operation may include rotating the outer output orifice about the longitudinal axis of the motor when drilling fluid is flowing through the pair of orifices to control fluid pressure pulse amplitude from the outer output orifice. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

A method of mitigating undesired pressure variations can include flowing fluid between wellbore sections, thereby mitigating a pressure differential due to drill string movement, and the fluid flowing between the wellbore sections via a bypass passage extending through a drilling motor. A drill string can include a drilling motor, a bypass passage in the drilling motor, a sensor, and a flow control device configured to selectively increase and decrease fluid communication between opposite ends of the drilling motor via the bypass passage, in response to an output of the sensor indicative of drill string movement. A method of mitigating undesired pressure variations in a wellbore due to drill string movement can include selectively preventing and permitting fluid communication between wellbore sections on opposite sides of a drilling motor, the fluid communication being permitted in response to detecting a threshold drill string movement.

A disclosed example embodiment of a fluid extraction system includes a fluid circuit fluidly coupled to a source of a fluid and configured to receive a fluid sample from the source, and a fluid separator arranged in the fluid circuit and configured to receive the fluid sample. The fluid separator includes a body that defines at least one fluid inlet, a flow chamber defined within the body, and is configured to receive and spin the fluid sample from the at least one fluid inlet. The fluid sample spirals inward and forms a vortex, and gases entrained within the fluid sample separate and migrate toward a center of the vortex. An outlet defined in the flow chamber provides a gas outlet that entrains and removes the gases and a liquid outlet receives and removes a remaining portion of the fluid sample.

Apparatus, systems, and methods may operate to determine the rotating magnetic tool face associated with a rotating section of a drillstring, to determine angular displacement between the rotating section of the drillstring and a substantially fixed section housing the rotating the section, and to determine the magnetic tool face of the substantially fixed section by combining the rotating magnetic tool face and the angular displacement. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods may operate in a similar manner to determine tool face locations.
