The present technology relates to fault-managed power (FMP), and particularly, to generating FMP in an industrial automation environment using single-pair Ethernet (SPE) cabling for use by DC motors. An FMP system may include a transmitter circuit and receiver circuits coupled together via a transmission link formed using SPE cable. The transmitter circuit can generate a FMP and transmit a pulsed signal having the FMP to the receiver circuits. The transmitter circuitry can also exchange data signals with the receiver circuits over a communication channel using the SPE cable. The receiver circuits can identify an expected power consumption of DC motors coupled to the receiver circuits and provide an indication of the expected power consumption to the transmitter circuit. The transmitter circuit can detect a fault based on a comparison between the transmitted FMP and the power consumption and terminate transmission of the FMP in response to detecting the fault.

A method and system for communication between a motor controller and an analytic module includes a Single Pair Ethernet interface with power supplied over the two data lines. The analytic module, in turn, connects to a motor or other devices proximate the motor. The analytic module receives input signals from the motor or different types of sensors or devices. A processing unit in the analytic module may perform some initial processing on the incoming data. The processing unit is configured to transmit either the raw input signals or processed data via the Single Pair Ethernet connection back to the motor controller or to other controllers in the system with the motor controller acting solely as a pass-through gateway. The analytic module unit may be configured to transmit data at different update rates. One of the update rates may be synchronized to an update period in the motor controller.

Method and apparatus for communication between analytic modules and a motor drive

A system and method for real-time detection of anomalies in a motor drive includes a controller receiving one or more signals corresponding to real-time operation of a controlled system. The controller samples the real-time signal during operation of the controlled system and maintains a moving window of the sampled data. A signature of the sampled data within the moving window is then generated. Each signature corresponds to operation of the controlled system within the period of time defined by the moving window. An identifier and a number of occurrences of each signature may be stored with the signature. An initial table of expected signatures may be generated, for example, by executing a training, or learning, period within the control system. The controller compares each real-time signature against the table of expected signatures to detect the occurrence of an anomaly.
