A storage management system selectively reduces a quality level of previously stored content. When storage in the system is becoming full, selected content is converted to a lower quality or lower storage size, based at least one of priority or age. Such conversion is performed in a computing background to minimize interference with programs being currently viewed. A user interface provides a list of programs that are candidates for conversion. The user selects programs to be converted or deleted to create additional storage for the new programs.

Prioritized content recording and storage management

Systems and methods allow a user at a telephone to communicate with an instant messaging client. The instant messaging client may be identified by a PIN that is entered on the telephone. Input from the telephone, include keypad and voice input may be converted to text that is displayed to the IM client. Text data received from the IM client may be converted to speech that is output to the telephone. A proximity detector may be used to determine the presence of an IM client user.

System and method for communicating with instant messaging clients using a telephone

A method and apparatus for providing improved efficiency in data browsing is disclosed. Automatic continuation of a data browsing session is enabled, while a download of a requested data file, that has been temporarily delayed, is handled separately in a background process. This separate background process generates additional requests for the requested data file as needed, thereby overcoming delays caused by transient network traffic and also enabling automatic downloading of data files that are undeliverable when first requested. When the download of the requested data file is successfully completed, a notification is provided and the requested data file is made observable.
