In a system for determining intent of a detected virtual contact between a user and a virtual object in a virtual reality environment, contact maybe detected between a designated selection device, manipulated by the user, and the virtual object. It may then be determined whether or not the detected contact between the designated selection device and the virtual object is intention. Determination of whether or not the detected contact is intentional may be based on at least one of an approach direction of the virtual contact with the virtual object, an approach velocity of the virtual contact with the virtual object, or an approach acceleration of the virtual contact with the virtual object.

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer program products, for processing search query suggestions. In one aspect, a search service provides query suggestions responsive to a query suggestion request from a client device, and determines if a prediction criterion is met. The prediction criterion is independent of a user selection of a query suggestion provided in response to one or more query suggestion requests. In response to determining that the prediction criterion is met, the search system provides search results to the client device. The search results are responsive to one of the query suggestions provided in response to the query suggestion request or one or more previous query suggestion requests.

The system may include an optical system and a display system received in a housing, and an audio output device operably coupled to the display system, the housing being coupled to a frame to be worn by a user. A sensing device may sense at least one of an ambient brightness level or an ambient noise level, and a control system and processor operably coupled to the optical system, the display system, the audio output device and the sensing device may, in response to an external command to transition between the virtual environment and the ambient environment, adjust at least one of a brightness level or a noise level of the virtual environment based on the sensed ambient brightness level and/or the sensed ambient noise level before executing the received external command.

Computer-implemented systems and methods are provided for analyzing and determining properties of virtual environments rendered on a display. The disclosed embodiments include, for example, a method for rendering a virtual environment, the method comprising operations performed with one or more processors. The operations of the method may include generating a plurality of object layers, the object layers representing permissible height values. The method may also include populating the environment with a plurality of objects, wherein each object is associated with a height value corresponding to one of the object layers. The method may also include determining whether any two objects form an occluded pair. The method may also include calculating a cast shadow index for each occluded pair reflecting a magnitude of a height differential between occluding object and the occluded object. The method may also include rendering the virtual environment in accordance with the calculated cast shadow indices.

In one general aspect, a method can include executing, by a computing device, a virtual reality (VR) application, providing, by the computing device, content for display on a screen of a VR headset in a VR space, the content including at least one object being associated with an action, detecting a first movement of a user immersed in the VR space towards the at least one object included in the VR space, and performing the associated action in the VR space based on detecting the first movement.

Computer-implemented systems and methods are provided for analyzing and determining properties of virtual environments rendered on a display. The disclosed embodiments include, for example, a method for obtaining, by one or more processors, one or more depth parameters comprising one or more display parameters reflecting characteristics of the display, wherein the display parameters include a height and width of the display, and one or more environment depth multipliers reflecting a scaling factor to optimize display performance. The method may also include calculating, by the one or more processors, a diagonal display distance based on the display parameters. The method may also include calculating, by the one or more processors, an environment depth based on the diagonal display distance and the one or more environment depth multipliers. The method may also include setting, by the one or more processors, the depth of the display equal to the environment depth.

Techniques for customizing search may include the following operations: outputting, to a computing device of a user, a Web page that enables selection of signals that are usable to generate search results; during a search session, receiving, through the Web page, a query and a selection corresponding to one or more of the signals, where the selection differs from a default set of search signals used by the search system for searching; obtaining, for output to the computing device, search results that are based on the query and the selection; and following the search session, configuring the search system to use the default set of search signals for searching.

A first single-action input is received indicating a start tracking request and including information identifying a first current location of a user-controlled object on a user display device. A second single-action input is received indicating a movement of the object across the display device to a first different location and including a stop tracking request. A first display object associated with the first current location and a second display object associated with the first different location are determined. A group of selected display objects is determined including the first and second display objects. Display objects associated with locations displayed in an area spanning a first region located between the first current location and the first different location are determined, where a selection of the selected display objects is based on the first start tracking request and the first stop tracking request, with no input associated with a modifier input.
