A lock assembly of a door preparation includes at least one spring latch member which is spring biased within a door jamb bore between an extended position and a retracted position in which the spring latch member, when the door is being opened, engages a strike plate of the door jamb and is moved inwardly within the door preparation for allowing the door to be opened. A dead bolt, which operates independently from the spring latch member, is movable between a retracted position in which it is within the door preparation and an extended position in which it is extended within the door jamb bore for locking the door. A projecting pin is movable between a first position in which the projecting pin is disposed generally between the spring latch member and dead bolt and a second position in which the pin projects laterally outwardly from a peripheral edge of the spring latch member when the dead bolt is moved to its extended position to engage the strike plate. The projecting pin has a detent element which rides within a cam track formed in the dead bolt for moving the projecting pin between its first and second positions. The lock assembly further includes an actuating assembly for moving the dead bolt between its retracted and extended positions.

A lock platform for a door includes a face plate lying in a vertical plane parallel to the plane of the door and an outer peripheral edge margin which extends from the outer periphery of the face plate generally perpendicularly away from the face plate and towards the door when mounting the lock platform on the door. The edge margin engages the door in such a manner that the face plate is spaced from the door thereby creating a space between the face plate and the door for accommodating components of a handle and lock assembly. The lock platform further includes an outwardly facing hollow boss located on the face plate and spaced from the hole of the door when mounting the lock platform thereon. The boss defines a first opening for receiving a handle of the handle and lock assembly or the like therein. The lock platform also includes a second opening for receiving a key cylinder, thumb turn member or the like therein. The second opening extends generally co-axial with respect to the hole of the door wherein when a key cylinder is mounted on the lock platform within the opening, the key cylinder extends into the hole of the door. Screw fasteners mount the face plate of the lock platform to a face plate of a second lock platform of similar construction positioned oppositely with respect to the lock platform on the other side of the door.

Lock platform

A dead bolt actuating assembly capable of moving a dead bolt between a retracted position and an extended position includes a latch arm having an end portion mounted on a rotating shaft. The latch arm is movable in response to the rotational movement of the shaft between a first position in which the dead bolt is in its retracted position and a second position in which the dead bolt is in its extended position. A link having an elongate body is pivotally connected to the opposite end portion of the latch arm at one end thereof. The link has a foot portion at the other end of the body extending in a generally perpendicular direction from the body. The foot portion is releasably engageable with the dead bolt for selectively moving the dead bolt from its retracted position to its extended position upon movement of the latch arm from its first position to its second position.

Dead bolt actuating assembly

A door latch operating assembly is capable of rotating a door latch arm between a first locked position for locking a door in a closed position and a second unlocked position for unlocking the door. The latch operating assembly includes a lock platform and a handle having a gripper portion which is grasped by a person's hand for rotating the handle, and a shaft portion attached to the gripper portion and extending therefrom through an opening in the lock platform. A driver cam has a housing which receives the shaft portion of the handle, and at least one wing member extending laterally outwardly from one side of the housing. The wing member has an upwardly facing engaging surface for engaging a link which is linearly movable with respect to the lock platform. The link has a bottom edge portion with a downwardly facing engaging surface which bears against the upwardly facing engaging surface of the wing member of the driver cam, and a top edge portion with an upwardly facing engaging surface. A disk is rotatably mounted on the face plate of the lock platform about an axis of rotation and has a detent radially spaced from the axis of rotation which is engageable with the upwardly facing engaging surface of the top edge portion of the link. The link rotates the disk upon movement of the link. A shaft is mounted on the disk and rotatable about the axis of rotation, the shaft carrying the latch arm thereon whereby the latch arm is moved between its first and second positions.

Door latch operating assembly

A door handle mounting assembly capable of being mounted on a door includes a lock platform having an opening formed therein and a handle mounted on the lock platform without the need of mechanical fasteners, staking or welding. More specifically, the handle has a gripper portion which is grasped by a person's hand for turning the handle, and a shaft portion which is attached at one of its ends to the gripper portion. The shaft portion extends through the opening of the lock platform and has a circumferential groove formed therein. A retaining collar having an annular wall is positioned to engage the lock platform, the collar having an inwardly projecting annular ring connected to the annular wall. The assembly also includes a driver cam having a housing with a hollow boss extending through the opening of the lock platform along a longitudinal axis. The hollow boss has a circumferential groove formed therein which receives the annular ring of the retaining collar for axially retaining the driver cam with respect to the lock platform. The housing also has an aperture formed therein in communication with the opening of the housing and hollow boss for receiving a catch therethrough. The catch is received within the groove of the shaft portion of the handle for axially retaining the driver cam with respect to the handle.

Door handle mounting assembly

An interchangeable lock core cylinder for use with a lock housing has a cylindrical body with a pin chest attached and parallel thereto, a rotatable key plug inserted within the cylindrical body, provision for capturing the core in the housing, and a mechanism within the key plug for selectively operating the capturing provision. This mechanism allows rapid insertion, removal, and replacement of lock core cylinders using an appropriate control key. When installed, the core cylinder is locked into engagement with the housing and has a positive latching provision so that it cannot be removed without use of the control key.

Disclosed is a means to provide easily installed and accurately aligned lever spring cage for door hardware locks and latches by in the field installers. The device comprises a pair of posts, selectively arranged and mounted in a mounting plate, having four diagonally arranged key hole shaped bosses which accept the pins and in combination with accurate holes in the spring cage effect both the securing and alignment of the spring cage relative to the mounting plate.

The invention comprises a two part key which replaces a conventional key in a conventional lock cylinder for purpose of temporary use wherein one of the parts is a plastic or similar material insert which replaces a portion of the conventional key and a short conplementary key which permits operation of the lock in conjunction with the insert. The insert being secured in the cylinder by means of the cylinder locking pins and being removable only by means of a special installation and extraction tool.

Construction keying

The dead bolt assembly of this invention features a novel cam activating assembly which permits election of one of two door knob spindle backsets which are in standard usage without the need for substituting different operating assemblies or reversing cylinder or thumbturn spindle components. The cam activating assembly features two parallel rotatably mounted cams which operate about two separate and parallel axes which are the centers of the two spindle backset in common industry usage. The two cams accept the door cylinder drive bar in one of the two predetermined backset positions. Each cam is capable of independently operating the latchbolt in either direction of rotation through coupled opposed cam surface which coact with the latch operating plate in conjunction with a coupling idler to convert the rotary motion of the cams to the reciprocating motion required to extend or retract the bolt.

The lock mechanism has a spring and cam assembly provided for returning the lock plunger assembly of the mechanism from a locked to an unlocked position thereof. In addition, however, the spring and cam assembly carries an enlongated limb. When the lock plunger assembly is translated to a locked position, it forces the limb to extend from the spring and cam assembly to a disposition in which it blocks a knob catch which is carried in the outside spindle of the mechanism. Accordingly, for being blocked by the limb, the knob catch cannot be depressed and, consequently, the knob which is latchingly engaged by the catch, cannot be removed from the outside spindle whenever the mechanism is in its locked disposition. The spring and cam assembly comprises a compact unit which is slidably received in the outside spindle and confiningly supports the limb therewithin for extension therefrom into obstruction of the knob catch.

The arrangement comprises a standard, door knob-operated, latch mechanism in which the cylindrical shank of the door knob is slidably engaged with the rotatable spindle of the mechanism, and the spindle has a spring-biased catch projecting therethrough which passes into a slot formed in the cylindrical shank of the knob. In this way, the knob is secured on the shank. The improvement comprises forming a ramp in a cut-out on the terminal or outermost end of of the cylindrical shank, and forming a complimentary bevel on a corner of the projecting catch. Accordingly, when the knob is slidably forced onto its spindle, during manufacturing assembly, the ramp formed in the cut-out engages the bevel and, consequently, depresses the catch to allow the cylindrical shank to slide thereupon and thereover, and to allow the catch latchingly to engage the slot.
