Systems and methods are described for operating a turbocharger. A current exhaust manifold pressure is determined based on an engine operating condition. A current operating condition of the turbocharger is determined. A surge correction factor is determined based on the current operating condition of the turbocharger. The current exhaust manifold pressure is adjusted based on the surge correction factor.

Method of controlling a turbocharger

A turbocharger control method and related systems are provided. An operational command to control a level of boost provided by the turbocharger is received. In response to receiving the operational command, an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve is instructed to move from a current position to a desired position. A time taken for the EGR valve to move from the current position to the desired position is determined. A maximum rise rate of exhaust manifold pressure corresponding to a predicted EGR valve position is determined. A permitted exhaust manifold pressure limit for the turbocharger is determined based on a current exhaust manifold pressure, the maximum rise rate of exhaust manifold pressure and the time taken. An operation of the turbocharger is controlled such that the permitted exhaust manifold pressure limit is not exceeded.

Turbocharger control method

Methods and systems are provided for coordinating operation of a high pressure EGR control loop with a boost pressure control loop. In one example, following a tip-in, turbine vane position may be adjusted as a function of a maximum permissible exhaust pressure upstream of a turbocharger turbine. The maximum permissible exhaust pressure may be determined as a function of a HP EGR valve position at the time of the tip-in.

Method and system for operating an engine

Methods and systems are provided for adjusting an EGR valve operation based on results from an EGR valve diagnostic. In one example, a method may include executing the EGR valve diagnostic during an engine deactivation, wherein the EGR valve diagnostic estimates an EGR valve stickiness used to adjust the EGR valve operation.

Methods and systems for an exhaust-gas recirculation valve

A method of operating an engine assembly is provided. The engine assembly comprises an engine and a turbocharger assembly, wherein a control parameter of the turbocharger assembly is controllable in order to control a level of boost provided by the turbocharger assembly. The method comprises determining a desirable pressure limit of exhaust gases upstream of a turbine of the turbocharger assembly, predicting a desirable limit value of the control parameter to be applied to the turbocharger assembly in order to achieve the desirable pressure limit, determining an error in the desirable limit value of the control parameter, adjusting the desirable limit value of the control parameter based on the error, and controlling the operation of the turbocharger assembly such that the adjusted limit value is not exceeded.

Method of operating an engine assembly

A pressure measurement apparatus for an engine is provided. The pressure measurement apparatus includes a gas flow path component of one of an intake system or an exhaust system, and a differential pressure sensor having a sensor body defining first and second pressure ports, wherein the sensor body is configured to cooperate with an opening in a wall of the gas flow path component so that at least one of the first and second pressure ports terminates inside the gas flow path component in an assembled configuration.

A method of cleaning an EGR valve operatively connected to an exhaust flow from an engine includes determining when cleaning is required, and when cleaning is required, operating the engine in a high temperature mode in which the temperature of exhaust gas exiting the engine is increased while producing a flow of exhaust gas having a low unburnt hydrocarbon content. The method further includes opening the EGR valve to allow hot exhaust gas to flow therethrough so as to remove combustion by-products that are fouling the EGR valve. Furthermore, the method includes producing an estimate of accumulated combustion by-product fouling of the EGR valve. The estimate is then used to determine whether and when to clean the EGR valve.

The present disclosure provides systems and methods for adjusting an exhaust gas recirculation rate to provide accurate air-fuel ratio. The disclosure provides a method for calculating an exhaust-gas recirculation rate based on a measured exhaust-gas lambda and a turbocharger speed. Through the use of the exhaust-gas lambda and the turbocharger speed it is possible to calculate an exhaust-gas recirculation rate while dispensing with the difficult and unreliable determination of the mass air flow for determining an exhaust-gas recirculation rate, thus providing a stable method which further reduces fuel consumption and emissions.

A method for controlling a compressor of a turbocharger is disclosed. In one example, the method comprises varying a maximum permitted compressor outlet temperature based upon a function of compressor outlet temperature and operating time, and controlling the operation of the compressor so that the maximum permitted compressor outlet temperature is not exceeded. In this way a higher boost pressure can safely be used during the early life of the compressor but excessive coking of the compressor with a resultant loss of efficiency later in the life of the compressor is reduced.
