A coated cutting tool includes a substrate with a coating having a total thickness of 0.25-30 &#x3bc;m. The coating has a first layer and a second layer, the first layer being a wear resistant PVD deposited layer having a thickness of 0.2-15 &#x3bc;m arranged between the substrate and the second layer, and wherein the second layer is a Cr layer.

Coated cutting tool and a method for coating the cutting tool

A coated cutting tool includes a body and a hard and wear resistant coating on the body. The coating has at least one NbN layer with a thickness between 0.2 &#x3bc;m and 15 &#x3bc;m, wherein the NbN layer includes a phase mixture of a cubic phase, c-NbN, and a hexagonal phase, h-NbN.

Coated cutting tool

A coated cutting tool includes a body and a hard and wear resistant PVD coating on the body, wherein the body is made from a cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, polycrystalline diamond or polycrystalline cubic boron nitride based materials. The coating includes a first (Ti,Al)-based nitride sub-coating and a second (Ti,Al)-based nitride sub-coating. The first (Ti,Al)-based nitride sub-coating can be a single layer, and the second (Ti,Al)-based nitride sub-coating can be a laminated structure, wherein the first (Ti,Al)-based nitride sub-coating includes a (TiAl)N-layer where 0.1&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.4, 0.6&#x3c;z&#x3c;1.2, and wherein the second (Ti,Al)-based nitride sub-coating includes a (TiAlCr)Nlayer where 0.5&#x3c;x1&#x3c;0.75, 0.05&#x3c;y1&#x3c;0.2, 0.6&#x3c;z1&#x3c;1.2.

The present invention relates to a wear resistant coating suitable to be deposited on cutting tool inserts for chip forming metal machining. The coating comprises at least two layers with different grain size, but with essentially the same composition. The coating is deposited by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD).

PVD coating for metal machining

A hard and wear resistant coating for a body includes at least one metal based nitride layer having improved high temperature performance. The layer is (Zr1-x-zSixMez)Ny with 0&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.30, 0.90&#x3c;y&#x3c;1.20, 0&#x2266;z&#x3c;0.25, and Me is one or more of the elements Y, Ti, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W and Al, comprised of a single cubic phase, a single hexagonal phase or a mixture thereof, with a cubic phase of a sodium chloride structure and a thickness between 0.5 &#x3bc;m and 15 &#x3bc;m. The layer is deposited using cathodic arc evaporation and is useful for metal cutting applications generating high temperatures.

Body with a metal based nitride layer and a method for coating the body

A cutting tool insert for machining by chip removal includes a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel, onto which a hard and wear resistant coating is deposited. The coating includes at least one polycrystalline nanolaminated structure having sequences of alternating A and B layers, wherein layer A is (AlMel)Nwith 0.3&#x3c;x1&#x3c;0.95, 0.9&#x3c;y1&#x3c;1.1 and Me1 is one or more of the elements Ti, Y, V, Nb, Mo, Si and W, or Me1 is Ti and one or more of the following elements Y, V, Nb, Mo, Si, Cr and W, and layer B is (ZrSiMe2)Nwith 0&#x3c;x2&#x3c;0.30, 0.90&#x3c;y2&#x3c;1.20, 0&#x2266;z2&#x3c;0.25 and Me2 is one or more of the elements Y, Ti, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W and Al.

Nanolaminated coated cutting tool

A cutting tool insert for machining by chip removal includes a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics or cubic boron nitride based material onto which a hard and wear resistant coating is deposited by CVD. The coating includes at least one multitextured &#x3b1;-AlOlayer with a thickness between 0.5 &#x3bc;m and 30 &#x3bc;m characterized with an ODF texture index&#x3e;1 and at least two dominant texture components with 2&#x3c;ODF density&#x3c;100 coexisting within the layer. A method of making and using the cutting tool insert are also described.

Alumina layer with multitexture components

A wear resistant coating suitable to be deposited on cutting tool inserts for chip forming metal machining, includes at least two layers with different grain size, but with essentially the same composition. The coating is deposited by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD).

A cutting tool insert for machining by chip removal includes a body of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride compact (PCBN), either as a solid insert or attached to a backing body, onto which a hard and wear resistant PVD coating is deposited. The coating includes a polycrystalline nanolaminated structure of alternating A and B layers, where layer A is (Ti,Al,Me1)N and Me1 is one or more of the metal elements from group 3, 4, 5 or 6 in the periodic table, layer B is (Ti,Si,Me2)N and Me2 is one or more of the metal elements from group 3, 4, 5 or 6 in the periodic table including Al with a thickness between 0.5 and 10 &#x3bc;m. The insert is particularly useful in metal cutting applications generating high temperatures, e.g., high speed machining of steels, cast irons, super alloys and hardened steels.

A cutting tool insert for machining by chip removal includes a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel, onto which a hard and wear resistant coating is deposited by physical vapor deposition. The coating includes a polycrystalline nanolaminated structure of alternating layers A and B where layer A is (Ti,Al,Me1)N and Me1 is optionally one or more of the metal elements from group 3, 4, 5 or 6 in the periodic table, layer B is (Ti,Si,Me2)N and Me2 is optionally one or more of the metal elements from group 3, 4, 5 or 6 in the periodic table including Al with a thickness between 0.5 and 20 &#x3bc;m and method of making the same. This insert is particularly useful in metal cutting applications generating high temperatures with improved edge integrity, machining of super alloys, stainless and hardened steels.

A cutting tool insert includes a body of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel and a hard and wear resistant coating including at least one metal nitride layer. The coating includes at least one layer of a thermally stabilized cubic structured (TiSiMe)N phase with 0.04&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.20 and 0&#x3c;z&#x3c;0.10, with a constant elemental composition throughout the layer where Me is one or more of the metal elements Y, Hf, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, Mn, Fe and Zn with a thickness of 0.5 to 10 &#x3bc;m. The layer is deposited using cathodic arc evaporation and is particularly useful for machining of stainless steel and super alloys.

Thermally stabilized (Ti,Si)N layer for cutting tool insert

A coated cemented carbide insert is particularly useful for milling of cast iron, methods for making the insert, and methods of their use are disclosed. The insert is formed by a composition of the substrate of about 5-7 wt % Co, about 0.05-20 wt % total amount of the metals selected from the group consisting of Ti, Nb, Ta and combination thereof, and balance WC with a coercivity (Hc) of 1 about 4-19 kA/m and an S-value of about 0.81-0.96. The coating includes a homogeneous layer of (TiAl)N, where x is between about 0.25 and abut 0.50 with a crystal structure of NaCl type and a total thickness of between about 1.0 and about 5.0 &#x3bc;m as measured on the middle of the flank face.

Insert for milling of cast iron

Coated cemented carbide inserts are particularly useful in general turning of superalloys. The inserts are formed from a cemented carbide of WC about 5.0-7.0 wt-% Co, and about 0.22-0.43 wt-% Cr, where the substrate has a coercivity (Hc) of about 19-28 kA/m. The coating contains a single layer of (TiAl)N-layer, where x is 0.25-0.50, with a crystal structure of NaCl type, a total thickness of about 3.0-5.0 &#x3bc;m, (200)-texture, and a compressive residual strain of about 2.5&#xd7;10-5.0&#xd7;10, optionally containing an outermost TiN-layer.

Coated cutting tool for general turning in heat resistant super alloys (HRSA)

Coated cemented carbide inserts, particularly useful for milling of cast iron, methods for making the inserts, and methods of their use are disclosed. The inserts are characterized by a composition of the substrate of about 5-7 wt % Co, about 0.05-2.0 wt % total amount of the metals selected from the group consisting of Ti, Nb,Ta and combination thereof, and balance WC with a coercivity (Hc) of 1 about 4-19 kA/m and an S-value of about 0.81-0.96. The coating comprises a homogeneous layer of (TiAl)N, where x is between about 0.25 and about 0.50 with a crystal structure of NaCl type and a total thickness of between about 1.0 and about 5.0 &#x3bc;m as measured on the middle of the flank face.

A cutting tool insert is formed from a substrate selected from cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel. The insert includes a hard and wear-resistant coating formed from laminar polycrystalline metal nitrides layers. The laminar polycrystalline metal nitrides layers have a repetitive form . . . A/B/A/C/A/B/A/C/ . . . with a total thickness of about 0.5 &#x3bc;m to about 5 &#x3bc;m.
