An auxiliary air fume hood provided with an improved airflow system for controlling the passage of air through an auxiliary air housing and orienting the flow of air in front of the face of the hood. The hood is designed to capture the auxiliary air through the face of the hood when the temperature of said air is as much as 20.degree. F. higher than the room air temperature.

A fume hood having top and rear baffle systems fixedly secured within a housing of the fume hood to provide a passage for lighter than air fumes along the top baffle and a passage for heavier than air fumes along the rear baffle. A movable damper selectively connects these passages with an exhaust of the fume hood, and this movable damper is remotely controlled from outside the fume hood adjacent the work area of the fume hood. An operator can control fume flow within the hood while the work area is closed by a sash.

A method of controlling room air flow into a horizontal sash type laboratory fume hood. The method includes laterally moving a damper across a room air vent by means of horizontal motion of the sash so that the vent opens and closes in an inverse manner to the sash.

A laboratory fume hood with at least two vertically movable sashes that are operatively coupled together by a sash lock that prevents both of the sashes from being opened at the same time. Opening of one sash automatically flips a pivoted lock into locking engagement with the other sash. Thus, one of the sashes must be closed before the other can be opened. This prevents the excessive waste of heated or cooled room air being sucked out through the fume hood.

A filter assembly for filtering air comprises a filter housing and a filter which is removably positioned within the housing. The filter housing includes spaced-apart first and second housing portions which are connected by connecting members on opposite sides of the housing, and the filter is positioned between the two housing portions. One end of each of the connecting members is secured to the first housing portion, and the other end of each connecting member is connected to the second housing portion in a manner which permits the second housing portion to be moved along the connecting members toward and away from the first housing. When the second housing portion is moved away from the first housing portion, the filter can be removed.

A laboratory fume hood that has a lower baffle, intermediate baffle, and upper baffle spaced from each other and from a floor of the fume hood for directing fumes upwardly to an exhaust opening. The baffle system provides an inverted funnel configuration with the hood wall for improved gas sweeping action adjacent the hood floor.
