Flame retarded resin compositions comprise at least one resin selected from the group consisting of polycarbonate, polyester and mixtures thereof, and a flame retarding effective amount of at least one nonhalogenated arylalkylsilyl flame retardant, the flame retarded resin composition being substantially free of haloorganic flame retardant and phosphate flame retardant.

The disclosure teaches a blend of a predominant amount of a polyphosphate flame retardant and an effective amount of a liquid crystalline additive for viscosity reduction and compatibilization when blended with a thermoplastic polymer, as compared to use of just the polyphosphate flame retardant alone. The polyphosphate can comprise resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) and/or its higher oligomers. The liquid can be a liquid crystalline segmented block copolymer or a liquid crystalline oligomer.

A lubricant composition for an internal combustion engine contains a lubricant basestock and an effective amount for antiwear properties of an oligomer containing at least one mesogenic segment and at least one flexible segment. The oligomer can have a centrally disposed flexible segment, e.g., derived from a polyalkylene glycol such as polypropylene glycol, with mesogenic segments as end caps or it can contain alternating flexible and mesogenic segments, e.g., comprising a repeat unit comprising aromatic ester groups and at least one linear polyalkylene spacer. The oligomer preferably has a molecular weight of from about 1,000 to about 4,000 and is present at from about 0.1% to about 3%, by weight of the basestock.

Solubilized metal (dialkylaminoalcoholate) compounds in organic solvent can serve as a source of metal values for metal oxide-containing superconductor compositions. Stable solutions, resistant to precipitation problems, can be formed by reaction of a dialkylaminoalkanol with a metal alkoxide followed by removal of by-product alkanol by vacuum distillation below the reflux temperature of the solution. A number of processes for the formation of insoluble metal alkoxides are disclosed. In one embodiment, there is disclosed a two step process wherein a halide of an at least divalent metal is reacted with an appropriate alcohol in the first step. In the second step, the intermediate compound formed is then reacted with more alcohol, said alcohol forming part of a solvent system in which the final metal alkoxide formed is insoluble. In another embodiment, a two step process is disclosed wherein the intermediate formed in the first step is isolated, and then in the second step the intermediate is reacted with an appropriate alcohol to yield the final product. The final embodiment of the present invention comprises a one step process for the production of insoluble metal alkoxides wherein a halide of an at least divalent metal is reacted with an appropriate alcohol in the presence of an excess amount of a hydrogen halide acceptor in a solvent in which the hydrogen halide compound formed is soluble.

Novel self-setting potassium-aluminum-phosphate compositions of matter are prepared by forming an aqueous slurry of a potassium source, an aluminum source and a phosphate source; mixing the slurry for a period of time sufficient to form a reactive, creamy mass having a viscosity of at least 2000 cps; and setting or curing the reactive creamy mass. The product is porous, can be foamed or nonfoamed, adheres well to substrates and when foamed, can be lightweight.
