A housing assembly for a rotary engine, has: a rotor housing extending around an axis, the rotor housing having an inner face facing a rotor cavity; side housings secured to opposite sides of the rotor housing, the rotor cavity bounded axially between the side housings; and a seal received within a groove at an interface between the rotor housing and a first side housing, the groove annularly extending around the axis, located outwardly of the inner face, and overlapping a peripheral section of the first side housing, the seal having: an elastomeric member compressed between the peripheral section and the rotor housing; and a shield disposed inwardly of the elastomeric member, the shield having a melting point above a temperature of combustion gases, the shield in contact with both of the peripheral section of the first side housing and the rotor housing.

The support ring and the spacer extend about the axis. The support ring is mounted to the perimeter edge by a braze joint. During a manufacturing method, a protective coating is applied to a first chamber surface of a first component to provide a coated first chamber surface. The protective coating is applied to a second chamber surface of a second component to provide a coated second chamber surface. The second component is configured with the first component to provide a pilot chamber structure. The pilot chamber structure includes a pilot chamber, a pilot aperture, a fuel aperture and an ignitor aperture. The pilot chamber is formed by the coated first chamber surface and the coated second chamber surface within the pilot chamber structure. The pilot aperture projects into the first component from a distal end of the pilot chamber structure to the pilot chamber. The fuel aperture projects into the pilot chamber structure to the pilot chamber. The ignitor aperture projects into the pilot chamber structure to the pilot chamber.

A rotary internal combustion engine is provided that includes a housing and a rotor. The housing includes first and second side housings and a center housing. The center housing is disposed between and attached to the first and second side housings. The rotor is disposed within a rotor chamber and is engaged with a rotor shaft that extends between the first and second side housings. The rotor has a peripheral side wall that extends between a pair of end face surfaces. At least one of the first side housing or the second side housing includes a side plate having a seal surface, an interior surface, and a core disposed between the seal surface and the interior surface. The core comprises a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material. The seal surface of the side plate engages in a sealing arrangement with a respective rotor end face surface.

A side housing for a rotary internal combustion engine, has: a side wall; a side plate having a rotor-engaging side facing away from the side wall and a back side opposite the rotor-engaging side and facing the side wall, the side plate defining first threads located on the back side, the first threads extending circumferentially around a central axis of the side plate; and a nut rotatable relative to the side wall about the central axis of the side plate and axially locked to the side wall relative to the central axis, the side plate secured to the side wall via a threaded engagement between the first threads of the side plate and second threads defined by the nut.

A multi-engine aircraft includes a first engine drivingly engaged to a common rotatable load and a second engine drivingly engaged to the common rotatable load, the second engine having a bleed air system and a control system in communication with a compressed air switching system. The control system controls operation of the second engine and/or the compressed air switching system. The compressed air switching system includes a switching valve that is displaceable between at least a first position and a second position, the first position interconnecting a lower pressure inlet and a switch outlet, and the second position interconnecting a high pressure inlet and the switch outlet. The switch outlet is in communication with the bleed air system of the second engine. The control system actuates the switching valve to switch between the first and second positions.

A method of operating a multi-engine aircraft having two or more gas turbine engines includes operating a first engine in a powered mode to provide motive power to the aircraft, and, in flight, operating a second engine in either a powered mode to provide motive power to the aircraft or in a standby mode to provide substantially no motive power to the aircraft. When operating the second engine in the powered mode, pressurized air is bled from a first bleed location of a compressor of the second engine. When operating the second engine in the standby mode, pressurized air is bled from a second bleed location of the compressor of the second engine and supplying the pressurized air to a bleed air system of the second engine. The second bleed location is downstream of the first bleed location within the compressor of the second engine.

A rotor assembly for a rotary internal combustion engine is provided. The rotor assembly includes a rotor having a radial groove defined radially in a peripheral surface of the rotor. The groove has a depth and an intermediate shoulder at an intermediate depth. The groove has a first width therealong that is narrower than an intermediate width at the shoulder. An apex seal is received in the groove and protrudes from the peripheral face of the rotor. The apex seal is configured to move radially between a first position and a second position outward of the first position. A biasing member biases the apex seal toward the second position. A platform is disposed in the groove between the apex seal and the biasing member and has a width greater than the first width.
