A piezoelectric actuator assembly is described. The assembly including a first layer including a top and a bottom surfaces. The assembly including a second layer having a top and a bottom surfaces, the bottom surface of the second layer is disposed over the top surface of the first layer. The assembly including a third layer having a top and a bottom surfaces, the bottom surface of the third layer is disposed over the top surface of the second layer. The assembly includes a first electrode, a second electrode, a third electrode, and a fourth electrode. The third electrode is configured to be shorter than the second electrode such that the active PZT length of the second layer and the third layer is shorter than the active PZT length of the first layer.

A method of manufacturing a tri-stage assembly is described herein. The method includes attaching a first microactuator and a second microactuator to a trace gimbal to a flexure during a PZT on flexure process (POF). The first microactuator is located at a distal end of the flexure and the second microactuator located at a proximal end of the flexure. The method also includes welding the trace gimbal to a baseplate, and a load beam to secure the trace gimbal including the first microactuator and the second microactuator.

Tri-stage design for actuator attachment on flexure

A dual stage actuated (DSA) suspension includes a dam-like structure that holds epoxy along the outside lateral side of the PZT microactuators while that epoxy hardens. In the illustrative embodiment, the dam-like structure is in the form of a wing rail that is integrally formed with the suspension base plate, and extends parallel to the outside face of the PZT. The wing rail has an upturned edge to help contain the epoxy while it hardens. The wing rail has springs at its fore and aft ends so that the rail does not unduly limit movement of the PZTs and hence microactuator stroke length. The wing rail does not touch the PZT electrodes. The encapsulation dam allows epoxy to be dispensed after the PZT has been located on the suspension, so as to substantially cover all sides of the PZT and thus prevent the shedding of contaminating particles during operation.

Method and apparatus in which a disk drive suspension flexure tongue supports a slider. A flexure frame attached to a suspension supports the tongue in dimple engagement with the suspension. Spaced, separate biasing structures on the frame act oppositely on the tongue for a net increase in tongue dimple contact force.

A disk drive suspension has a mount plate, an outwardly tapered load beam supported by the mount plate and having a base portion, a hinge portion, a beam portion having a first face with turned edges and a flexure supported by the beam portion distally of said beam portion face, and a generally congruent tapered stiffener having a central portion of a given height that is concave and open to the beam portion. The stiffener has left and right flange portions extending laterally from the central portion to the beam portion upturned edges to locate said central portion centrally on the beam portion face.
