An improved currency validation and storage arrangement is described including a currency validation and transport unit and a currency storage cassette which are slidably removable from a chassis. An improved stacking and sensing arrangement for a currency validator is disclosed including a cam driven actuating fork and interrupt arm which push currency from a prestacking to a stacked position and to sense both a stacking operation and the removal or presence of the removable currency cassette. The arrangement eliminates the need for any electrical or electronic components in the removable currency cassette for purposes of sensing its presence or absence. The arrangement also provides a simple and robust mechanical pusher arrangement.

Currency validator and secure lockable removable currency cassette

An improved currency validator apparatus adaptable to be assembled in either a validator up-stacker, down-stacker, or stacker-less configuration is disclosed. A motor bracket housing and an optics housing interconnect to form a bill passageway. The housings contain optical and magnetic sensors, permit the easy re-positioning of a magnetic sensor and an opposing pinch roller assembly, and preferably are made of a translucent red plastic material. The red plastic material permits the unobstructed transmission of infra-red light from an infra-red sensor, and further acts to indicate the position of the banknote entryway when illuminated by the optical sensors. An improved pinch roller assembly which automatically adjusts to the way in which the magnetic sensor is seated is also described. Further, an encoder positioned on the motor drive shaft, and accompanying slotted optical sensor, provide greater accuracy regarding bill position in the validator.

Currency validator

A method and apparatus for a lockable, removable cassette for attachment to a bill validator is disclosed. The cassette is removed from a bill validator by service personnel and transported to a central office, where an authorized person unlocks a hinged door with a separate key to remove stored bills. A lever is turned to a predetermined position which unlocks the cassette from the bill validator, and locks a pusher plate to prevent unauthorized bill removal. The lever is prevented from being turned clockwise and from further rotation past the predetermined position. When the hinged door of the secured cassette is opened by authorized personnel, the lever is released from its locked position arming the cassette. The emptied cassette can now be returned to the service person who can now reconnect it to a bill validator by further rotating the lever, which locks the cassette in place and unlocks the pusher plate to prepare the cassette to receive bills accepted by the validator. The cassette is easy to use, compact, tamper resistant, durable, and may use only mechanical parts. Further, the cassette can be modified to store a larger or smaller amount of bills, and works with existing bill pushers with only minor modifications required.

Method and apparatus for a lockable, removable cassette, for securely

A method and apparatus to prevent fraud in a bill acceptor system utilizing a lockable, removable cassette is disclosed. A security arrangement including a security sensor and a microprocessor monitors the attachment of the cassette for proper installation, and monitors the bill pusher cycle when an accepted bill is loaded into the cassette. If the cassette is not properly installed or if a bill pusher cycle fails to complete, indicating a possible fraud attempt, then the bill validator is disabled.

Security arrangement for use with a lockable, removable cassette

The present invention provides an integrated self-contained portable data scanner apparatus which is suitable for long periods of uninterrupted handheld use for purpose such as the bar code scanning of inventory. The apparatus includes a number of modules interconnected into a self-contained unit with no external cabling necessary. The basic modules are a scanner module, a data module including one or more data processing components such as a keyboard, a display or a microprocessor, and a removable rechargeable power module.

Portable data scanner apparatus

A compact, low power gate apparatus for use in coin operated machines, such as coin operated telephones, utilizes an inclined diverting surface and adjacent, coupled levers to decrease power requirements, multiply displacements and save space. A selectively energizable solenoid associated with a first lever moves the levers from a first to a second position when the solenoid is energized, and maintains them in their first position until the solenoid is energized again. A spring restores the levers to their first position when the solenoid is no longer energized and maintains the levers in their first position until the solenoid is energized again. The second lever has a coin diverting plate which is selectively positioned to divert a coin to a particular path or allow the coin to continue along the same path. The inclined diverting surface has an angle such that the component of force due to a falling coin impacting the surface is directed toward the pivot point of the second lever, decreasing the restoring force required to maintain the second lever in its first position, thereby decreasing the power requirements of the solenoid. The apparatus can reject coins in a passive mode and accept coins in an active mode. A microprocessor controls the selective energization of the solenoid by controlling a specially designed power supply and power application control circuit for low power operation from power supplied from a phone line.

Compact, low power gate apparatus for coin operated machines

Jam reducing apparatus for use in coin operated machines, such as telephones, acts to prevent the insertion of coins when the entryway is obstructed by foreign matter, assists in dislodging jammed coins and discourages vandals. The apparatus comprises a coin entryway which includes an inclined surface as part of a flared end of a lid. An entry slot in an entrance blocker, which is an integral part of the lid, as in substantial alignment with the coin insert slot of the front panel of the machine in normal operation. The lid is connected to a torsion spring and is associated with a coin reject lever. The inclined surface of the entryway lies opposite the blocker slot and is angled toward an exit of the coin entryway, which directs a coin into the machine. In normal use, inserted coins pass through the entryway and are directed into a coin mechanism for coin testing. Foreign matter inserted into the machine hits the inclined surface and exerts a camming force on the lid, rotating the lid about a torsion spring. This moves the coin entry slot and the blocker slot out of substantial alignment, preventing the insertion of additional foreign matter or another coin. Removal of the foreign matter allows the lid to return to its normal operating position under the force of the spring.

An improved motor cntrol for banknote handling apparatus is described. An improved stacker pusher motor arrangement has a defined cycle of operation. The time it takes the stacker pusher motor to complete a predetermined portion of this cycle is measured. A braking time is computed from the measured time, and a braking control signal dependent thereon is applied to the stacker pusher motor to stop the stacker pusher motor at the appropriate position. An improved banknote transporting arrangement measures the time needed for a banknote to travel from a first point to a second point. A braking time is computed from the measured time and an appropriate braking control signal is applied to stop the banknote at the appropriate position.

Motor control for banknote handing apparatus

An improved banknote stacker is described which provides a high level of flexibility and a high degree of stacking efficiency with a reduced level of jams and crumpled banknotes. In one embodiment the improved banknote stacker includes upper and lower housings having molded fingers and slots for interconnection with a banknote validator, banknote transport apparatus including a self adjusting belt-pulley arrangement, a prestorage compartment, a banknote pusher having a home sensing arrangement which allows it to be controlled using a simple open-loop control, and a banknote magazine for storing stacked banknotes and providing ready access to the stacked banknotes.

Stacker apparatus

A printer module for ready attachability to a portable data scanner to form an integrated portable unit is described. The printer module includes a symmetrical printer cartridge, having a printer mechanism, a printer mechanism control circuit and a paper supply. The symmetrical printer cartridge being readily removable and rotatable to facilitate lefthanded and righthanded usage. The printer module further including a bayonet configured locking arrangement to facilitate mechanical and electrical connection of the printer module with the portable data scanner.

An improved banknote stacker is described which achieves reduced levels of jamming and improper stacking. A banknote is directed to a prestorage compartment using a pulley, belt and roller drive assembly. During a pusher cycle, a pusher plate drives the banknote from the prestorage compartment into a banknote storage magazine, and then the pusher plate returns to its original position. Just prior to the pusher cycle, rollers in the roller drive assembly are retracted to release the banknote. The pusher plate is specially designed to prevent banknote slippage, and it is preferably driven by the same drive mechanism which retracts the rollers to insure that a pusher cycle will follow shortly after the retraction of the rollers.

A rotary actuator having an output driver rod mounted within an output sleeve that is rotated by a drive motor. A driving mechanism for coupling the drive motor to the output sleeve includes a worm wheel that is mounted on the output sleeve so as to be freely rotatable relative to the output sleeve and a driving portion for transmitting power from the worm wheel to the output sleeve. A clutch also is mounted on the output sleeve for rotation with and for axial movement along the output sleeve. When in its first position, the clutch couples the drive portion of the drive mechanism to the output sleeve for transmitting rotational force. The clutch is normally biased into its first position for engagement with the drive portion of the drive mechanism and thus for coupling it to the output sleeve for transmitting rotational force. A declutch mechanism causes the clutch to be moved into a second position out of engagement with the drive portion. The declutch mechanism is capable of switching from a powder driver operation to a manual hand wheel mode of operation without going through a neutral position. A self-locking means is provided to prevent rotation of the hand wheel under torsional back force when the clutch is in the second position.

Rotary actuator

A rotary actuator having an output drive rod mounted within an output sleeve that is rotated by a drive motor. A driving mechanism for coupling the torque of the drive motor to the output sleeve includes a worm wheel that is mounted on the output sleeve so as to be freely rotatable relative to the output sleeve and a driving portion for transmitting power from the worm wheel to the output sleeve. A clutch also is mounted on the output sleeve for rotation with axial movement along the output sleeve. The clutch is normally biased into its first position for engagement with the drive portion of the drive mechanism for coupling it to the output sleeve for transmitting rotational force. A declutch mechanism causes the clutch to be moved of engagement with the drive portion, if the drive portion ceases to operate and the output sleeve is to be rotated by a hand wheel. When the clutch is moved out of engagement with the drive portion, it is moved into a coupling arrangement with the hand wheel for manually driving the clutch and transmitting a rotational force to the output sleeve. The clutch is retained in its second position until operation of the driving portion is resumed when the clutch is automatically returned to its position in engagement with the driving portion.

A switching mechanism can be utilized in conjunction with an electrically driven actuator, for example, either a linear or rotary operated actuator. The switching mechanism can be utilized to either control the extent of operation of the actuator, thereby operating as a limit switch, and also can be used for controlling other electrical devices that are to be operated in dependence upon the position of the driven member of the actuator. For this purpose, the switching mechanism is provided with a plurality of electrical switches, each of which can be controlled so as to be switched at different points in the operation of the actuator. Associated with each of the electrical switches is a separate counting mechanism. All the counting mechanisms are driven by a common drive gear which is coupled to the drive mechanism of the actuator. Each of the counting mechanisms can be independently preset for activating the corresponding switch after a different number of turns of the common drive gear, with the number of turns being correlated with the position of the actuator.

Actuator activated switching mechanism

A linear actuator for providing a thrust force for actuating various movable members, such as, for example lever arms, cranks, slides and valve flaps. The thrust force is applied by an extension rod that is arranged within a housing so as to extend in an axial direction along the housing and out from the housing. The extension rod has a load connector mounted on the end outside of the housing for connection to the movable member to which the thrust force is to be applied. A drive screw is attached to the extension rod so that rotation of the drive screw is translated into an axial displacement of the extension rod. A drive motor serves to rotate the drive screw. Either when a blockage of the movable member occurs or when the extension rod has reached the end of its path of travel, any attempt for continued movement of the extension rod significantly increases the thrust force applied to the rod. In order to prevent the continued application of such force and resulting damage to the system, a thrust control mechanism is provided for terminating operation of the drive motor when the thrust force exceeds selected thrust force limits. The thrust control mechanism includes an adjustable device for enabling the thrust force limits to be selectively adjusted. Such adjustments for selecting the limits of the thrust force can be made without requiring disassembly or any adjustment to the major working mechanism of the linear actuator.
