Formulations for topical or local administration of drugs directly to the breast or chest to produce a regional or local effect with lower systemic drug levels than when an effective amount is administered systemically are disclosed herein. In a preferred embodiment, the drug is administered to the surface of the breast, areola, or directly to the nipple. The formulations provide increased patient comfort, increased bioavailability and relatively high blood levels in the region to be treated with a reduction of side effects compared to those administered systemically. The preferred formulations contain drugs in the form of micro or nanoparticles, which may be formed of drug alone or in combination with an excipient or carrier. The excipient or carrier may modify the release rates or enhance absorption into the affected area. The drug formulation may be in the form of a cream, lotion or foam.

Pharmaceutical preparations for treatments of diseases and disorders of the breast

Drug delivery compositions which are suitable for vaginal administration for the treatment of diseases and disorders in the urogenital tract are described. The compositions may be in the form of a tablet, liquid suspension or dispersion, dried powder, topical ointment, cream, foam, suppository, or aerosol. The drug delivery compositions are administered directly to the vagina and do not require the use of a solid device. This method of administration reduces the systematic levels of the drugs.

Vaginal delivery of drugs

Vaginal or rectal applicators for the delivery of a small volume of pharmaceutical preparation, i.e. less than 1 mL are disclosed herein. The delivery of a small volume of a pharmaceutical preparation allows for the transvaginal delivery of the preparation to the region of the upper vaginal vault or rectum for the treatment of diseases and disorders of the female urogenital system, cervix, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and peritoneal cavity and the lower abdomen. The vaginal or rectal applicators contain four main parts, an applicator barrel, a plunger, a plunger tip, and an applicator cap. The applicator functions similar to a syringe. The applicator is filled with a pharmaceutical preparation with the plunger in the back position. The cap is attached to seal the pharmaceutical preparation in the applicator. To use the applicator, the cap is removed, the applicator is positioned, and the plunger is depressed.
