An apparatus and a method that allow a quota to be implemented over a data storage system having data associated with the user stored in multiple volumes or directories across multiple storage servers. The quota limits a user or a group of users to a defined amount (e.g., quota) of storage resources of the storage system. The method may include monitoring input-output (IO) data access requests on each of the multiple storage servers, for example, using a pluggable quota filter on each of the storage servers, determining a total usage of storage resources for a particular user over the multiple storage servers, and limiting the user to the quota over the multiple storage servers.

Disclosed is an apparatus and method of client device roaming from a home subnet to a foreign subnet of a network. The method includes the client device accessing the network through a first access node of the home subnet, and the client device roaming to a second access node of the foreign subnet, the client device accessing the network through the second access node, the client device maintaining a fixed client IP address, default gateway IP address and IP subnet attachment as the client device roams from the first access node to the second access node.

An apparatus and a method for determining whether a quota has been violated by using a platform-identification value, instead of the platform-specific identification value. The method may include receiving a quota-sensitive data request from a user at a data storage system, which includes a platform-specific identification value. The method further includes performing a lookup operation on a first data store using the platform-specific identification value to determine a platform-independent identification value that corresponds to the user, and translating the platform-specific identification value into a platform-independent identification value. The first data store includes multiple entries that map multiple platform-specific identification values that correspond to the same user on different platforms to the same platform-independent identification value. Once the platform-specific identification value is translated, the quota-sensitive data request is determined whether a quota is violated using the platform-independent identification value.

Universal quota entry identification

An anti-virus blade provides anti-virus services to a storage system and eliminates the need to develop an interface to initiate a scan operation at the blade. An anti-virus engine executed at the blade receives a request to scan data maintained by the storage system. The anti-virus engine creates a stub file (e.g., a file that has the same name as the Currently Amended file indicated in the request, but does not contain data) and issues an I/O command to the file. A file framework module executed at the blade intercepts the I/O to the dummy file and passes the I/O to an anti-virus application, which is registered with the file framework to receive I/Os from the anti-virus engine. The anti-virus application, in turn, initiates a scan operation by issuing a read request to the stub file, without receiving the request for scanning directly from the storage system.

An apparatus and a method that limits a user's access to data of the storage system based on an access quota. The method may include determining an access pattern of data access requests to storage resources by a user, and comparing the access pattern of the user against an access quota, as defined by an access policy. Based on the comparison, if the user's access to the storage resources has exceeded the access quota, the storage system can limit access to the user to the storage resources.

A storage server maintains an active file system and at least one read-only, persistent point-in-time image (RPPI) of the active file system. The booting time of the storage server is reduced by delaying the mounting of the RPPI(s) until the storage server receives a request to access a corresponding RPPI after the storage server has already booted.
