An electrical brush wiper for use in a position sensor to contact an electrically resistive surface. The wiper has a metallic beam having a channel. The channel is formed from a pair of parallel extending flanges. One of the flanges is attached to the beam. Carbon fibers are secured within the channel between the flanges. The flanges have several tabs for securing the fibers in the channel. The tabs can be welded to the flanges.

A ball grid array resistor network has a substrate that has top and bottom surfaces. Resistors are disposed on the top surface. Conductors are disposed on the top surface, and each conductor is electrically connected to an end of each resistor. Vias extend through the substrate and are electrically connected to the conductors. Solder spheres are disposed on the bottom surface, and are electrically connected to the vias. A cover coat is disposed over the conductors and resistors. In an alternative embodiment, the vias are eliminated and the resistor network is formed on the bottom surface of the substrate. The resistor network provides a high density of resistors per unit area.

Ball grid array resistor network

A throttle controller includes an electrical position sensor having a movable element and being mounted on a steering mechanism, such as a handlebar, and a mechanical interface from the position sensor to a throttle handle. The movement of the throttle handle actuates the mechanical interface which, in turn, alters the position of the movable element in the position sensor. The changeable position of the movable element thus provides an electrical indication of the position of the throttle handle suitable for controlling the internal combustion engine or electric motor. The position sensor may be a rotary position sensor having a rotor as the movable element, wherein rotating the throttle handle rotates the rotor. The throttle controller is particularly useful on a personal water craft, all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, etc. Potentiometers or Hall effect devices are both suitable for use as the position sensor.

A pointing device for controlling the positioning, movement and operation of a cursor on the display screen. Specifically, the device has a base with an end of a shaft mounted therein. Resistors and conductive pads are mounted on the base. A cable is provided with several electrical conductors and an interposer is mounted between the cable and the base for electrically connecting the resistors and the pads to the conductors. The interposer provides an electrical path between the resistors and the conductors. The interposer can be a conductive film adhesive or a pressure sensitive adhesive having vias filled with a conductive epoxy.

A fuel level indicator system that utilizes a resistor card having an arc-shaped resistive path with a first set of spaced apart conductor lines and an arc-shaped resistive ink material overlying the first set of conductor lines. The first conductor lines are formed at an angle with respect to a radial line drawn from the center of the resistive path arc. The resistor card also has an arc-shaped continuously solid conductor base and a second set of spaced apart conductor lines extending from the base at an angle with respect to a radial line drawn from the center of the arc-shaped conductor base. The system includes a wiper assembly having a pair of spaced apart arms. Each arm has a plurality of parallel fingers extending from one end. One of the fingers on a first arm engages a conductor line on the resistive path and a second finger on the first arm engages an adjacent conductor line along the resistive path. A first finger on the second arm engages a conductive line on the conductive path; and a second finger engages an adjacent conductor line on the conductive path. The wiper assembly is constructed and arranged to provide rotational movement along the arc-shaped conductive path and arc-shaped resistive path. The system also has a float with an extending lever that is connected to the wiper assembly to produce rotational movement of the wiper assembly as the float moves.

A resistor network has a substrate with top and side surfaces. Resistors are located on the side surfaces. Several side conductors are located on the side surface and are electrically connected to the resistors. Several top conductors are located on the top surface and are electrically connected to the side conductors. Each top conductor has a cavity. A solder sphere is partially located in the cavity and is electrically and mechanically connected to the top conductor by reflowed solder paste. A cover coat covers the side conductors and the resistors. The resistor network provides a high density of resistors per unit area.

A dual positional hall effect sensor 10 having an outer housing 12, an actuator 14, a linear movement sensor 20, and a rotational movement sensor device 22. The housing 12 includes a lower chamber 24 and an upper chamber 26, with a barrier wall 28 separating therebetween. The actuator 14 is made up of a coupling 32 for coupling to a movable device (not shown) that is to have its position sensed, a rod 34 that extends from the lower to the upper chamber, a collar 36 for retaining the actuator 14 within the lower chamber, and a key 38. The linear motion sensor 20 is unattachably positioned to set on collar 36, and includes a magnetically conducting pole piece 42 and a left and right magnets 44. The magnets 44 and pole piece 42 are positioned around the rod 34 in a 'U' shaped configuration. The lower chamber 24 also includes a positionally fixed hall effect sensor 46 and a spring 48 positioned between the barrier wall 28 and the collar 36. The rotational movement sensor 22, located in the upper chamber 26, includes a sensor housing structure 52 that has a groove or slide 54 for insertion and sliding of the key 38. The sensor 22 further includes a magnetically conducting pole piece 56 and a top and bottom magnet 58. A hall sensor 60 is positioned between the two parts of the magnet 58 and fixed in position relative to any rotational movement of the rotational sensor 22.

Dual rotational and linear position sensor

An extremely reliable and effective position sensor is provided at low cost for determining the relative position of a mechanical linkage with respect to a reference point. The position sensor includes a rotor or bracket which is mechanically coupled to the linkage and contains at least two magnets on opposite walls adjacent a channel opening. The opposing magnets are formed with first and second sloped or ramped sections which produce produce variable magnetic fields as determined by the geometric profile of the magnets. One or more detectors are positioned in the air gap between the opposing magnets. As the linkage is moved, the rotor or bracket moves with respect to the detector causing a change in the strength of the magnetic field detected by the detector whereby the detector determines the position of the movable linkage.

Linkage of position sensor

A dual in line switch apparatus selects between several switch positions. Specifically there is a housing that contains slides. The slides have a slide groove on each end and a slide grip portion. A wire contact is attached to each slide. A first and second row of terminals is molded in the housing. The first and second row of terminals rest above the bottom of the housing and are spaced apart to define a slot between the rows of terminals. The wire contacts are located between the terminals and the slide. The wire contacts operate, as the slide is moved, to make and break electrical connections between the terminals. The wire contact has an integrally formed pair of upright portions and a wire detent. The terminal has a detent cavity. The upright portion fits into and is retained by the slide groove. The wire detent, the detent cavity and the slot provide a positive mechanical stop for each of the switch positions.

A linear slide selector switch for multiple channels for selecting between several switch positions. Specifically, there is a housing having a hinged door with a latch lock, the door rotates to a closed position and is held in a closed position by the latch lock. The housing also contains a slide and a printed circuit board. The printed circuit board has rows of contacts. A contactor is mounted to the slide. As the slide is moved linearly, electrical connections are made and broken on the printed circuit board.

Slide selector switch

A position sensor for sensing the position of an attached device. There is a housing having terminals and a cover attached to the housing. Resistors, conductors and conductive traces are located on the cover and electrically connected to the terminals. A rotor is positioned between the housing and the cover, and has a contactor mounted thereon for contacting the resistor and the conductor such that as the rotor rotates a resistance value indicative of the sensor position is varied. The cover has a terminal insert which connect between the conductive traces and the terminals. A leaf spring rotates the rotor back to a starting position.

Cover mounted position sensor

A dual in line switch apparatus selects between several switch positions. A housing has several slides. A row of terminals is attached to the housing. A contact sheet is located between the slides and the terminals. The contact sheet operates, as the slide is moved, to make and break electrical connections between the terminals. The contact sheet includes a flexible film having a contact pad and a detent notch and an adhesive tape that is attached to the flexible film. The tape has a slot formed therein and the contact pad is pressed through the slot by the slide to electrically connect with the terminals. The switch provides electrical contacts that are sealed from detrimental environmental effects. The detent notch provides a positive mechanical stop with tactile feedback for each of the switch positions. An alternative embodiment uses another flexible film with conductive vias that connect to solder spheres.

Sealed dip switch

An extremely reliable and effective position sensor is provided at low cost for determining the relative position of a mechanical linkage with respect to a reference point. The position sensor includes a rotor or bracket which is mechanically coupled to the linkage and contains at least two magnets on opposite walls adjacent a channel opening. The opposing magnets are formed with first and second sloped or ramped sections which produce produce variable magnetic fields as determined by the geometric profile of the magnets. One or more detectors are positioned in the air gap between the opposing magnets. As the linkage is moved, the rotor or bracket moves with respect to the detector causing a change in the strength of the magnetic field detected by the detector, whereby the detector determines the position of the movable linkage.

A device that allows for simple cost effective connections to flexible multilayered circuits and flexible membrane switches. The invention provides a connecting device that includes a housing that has a base and a closeable lid. At least one contact is attached to the housing. One end of the contact(s) extends beyond the housing and is suitable for making a connection to an electrical circuit. The other end of the contact(s) is positioned inside the housing for connecting to the flexible circuit board or flexible membrane. The lid can be fixed in the closed position whereby the end of the contact(s) inside the housing is compressed with the flexible circuit. The lid can be attached to the base with a hinge, and when the lid is closed it snap locks in place so that the contact(s) are firmly held to the conductive pads of flexible circuit. The membrane or flexible circuit is quickly and accurately positioned in place and securely held by using tabs on the housing which protrude through slots in the membrane or flexible circuit.
