The present teachings provide for an active steering system for controlling a vehicle. The system can include at least one sensor and a control module. The at least one sensor can be configured to detect a leading obstacle. The control module can be configured to receive a signal from the at least one sensor, to determine a steering profile, and to execute a lane change maneuver based on the steering profile. The steering profile can include a plurality of steering angles and corresponding vehicle positions for maneuvering the vehicle from a current lane to an adjacent lane. The steering angles can be calculated to not increase the acceleration of the vehicle above an occupant comfort threshold value and to not cause the vehicle to cross an outer boundary of the adjacent lane.

Active steering safety system

A warning system for a motor vehicle includes a control system for estimating the type of intersection control for two or more roadways. The method of estimating the type of intersection control includes steps of classifying each roadway at an intersection and estimating the type of intersection control used for each roadway. Roadways can be classified by size, traveling speed, number of lanes as well as any other roadway characteristics. The warning system can be operated using the estimated intersection control device for each roadway. In some cases, information from a target vehicle can be used to determine a potential violation of an intersection control device.

Warning system for a motor vehicle determining an estimated intersection control

A motor vehicle is provided having a collision warning system that can map an upcoming road section for the motor vehicle. The system can evaluate potential paths for the road section based on vehicle travel history information through it. The system can receive the information from a transmitter proximate the road section, such as a roadside transmitter or one or more nearby vehicles having traversed the road section. The road section can include an intersection and the system can determine a lane configuration for at least a portion of it based on vehicle travel history information. The system can calculate a threat of collision for the motor vehicle with a target vehicle based on map data obtained from estimated paths or lane configurations for the road section. Methods pertaining to mapping a road section and operation of the system are also provided.

Method of estimating intersection control

A method of estimating an intersection location for a vehicle safety system is disclosed. The method includes steps of calculating a stopping distance according to operating parameters of the motor vehicle. The method also includes a step of determining a location for an intersection using the stopping distance and the location of the vehicle. The method further includes steps of determining a distance between a remote vehicle and the intersection. A vehicle safety system is controlled according to the distance between the motor vehicle and the intersection and the distance between the remote vehicle and the intersection.

Method of intersection estimation for a vehicle safety system

A collision warning system for a motor vehicle is disclosed. The collision warning system includes a first mode and a second mode. The system operates in the first mode when the motor vehicle has right of way. The system operates in the second mode where the motor vehicle does not have right of way.
