This invention provides aromatic diimines where the diimines have imino groups with at least two carbon atoms, and either are in the form of one benzene ring having two imino groups on the ring, which imino groups are meta or para relative to each other, and in which each position ortho to an imino group bears a hydrocarbyl group, or are in the form of two benzene rings connected by an alkylene bridge and having one imino group on each ring, and in which each position ortho to an imino group bears a hydrocarbyl group. This invention also provides aromatic secondary diamines where the diamines have amino hydrocarbyl groups with at least two carbon atoms, and either are in the form of one benzene ring having two amino groups on the ring, which amino groups are meta or para relative to each other, and in which each position ortho to an amino group bears a hydrocarbyl group, or are in the form of two benzene rings connected by an alkylene bridge and having one amino group on each ring, and in which each position ortho to an amino group bears a hydrocarbyl group. Also provided are processes for forming diimines and secondary diamines from primary diamines, including the aromatic diimines and aromatic secondary diamines of the invention.

Diimines and secondary diamines

This invention provides articles made by reaction injection molding and spray coatings, and processes for forming such articles and coatings. The coatings and articles are polyureas or polyurea-urethanes. The ingredients used to form the coatings and articles comprise at least (A) an aromatic polyisocyanate and (B) a mixture formed from components comprised of (i) at least one polyol and/or at least one polyetheramine, (ii) an aromatic primary diamine, and (iii) an aliphatic secondary diamine which has about twelve to about forty carbon atoms and in which the having amino hydrocarbyl groups are secondary or tertiary hydrocarbyl groups.

This invention provides aromatic diimines which have imino hydrocarbylidene groups with at least two carbon atoms, and aromatic secondary diamines which have amino hydrocarbyl groups with at least two carbon atoms. Both the aromatic diimines and the aromatic secondary diamines either are in the form of one phenyl ring, or are in the form of two phenyl rings connected by an alkylene bridge; each position ortho to an imino group or an amino group bears a hydrocarbyl group. When in the form of one phenyl ring, there are two imino groups on the ring or two amino groups on the ring; the imino groups or amino groups are meta or para relative to each other. When in the form of two phenyl rings connected by an alkylene bridge, there is either one imino group or one amino group on each phenyl ring. Also provided are processes for forming diimines and secondary diamines.

The liquid ethereal medium or liquid hydrocarbyl medium of a solution or slurry of an alkali metal tetrakis(aryl)borate is substituted with at least one halogenated hydrocarbon, without isolating the alkali metal tetrakis(aryl)borate, to form a new slurry or solution. A solution comprising a halomagnesium tetrakis( aryl)borate in a liquid organic medium, wherein the liquid organic medium is comprised of one or more liquid dihydrocarbyl ethers, one or more liquid hydrocarbons, one or more liquid halogenated hydrocarbons, or mixtures thereof, is contacted with water. This produces magnesium di&lsqb;tetrakis( aryl)borate&rsqb; in the organic phase of a two-phase water/liquid organic medium. The magnesium di&lsqb;tetrakis( aryl)borate&rsqb; can be, but need not be, isolated. A protic ammonium salt, an onium salt, or a triarylmethyl salt can be reacted with the magnesium di&lsqb;tetrakis( aryl)borate&rsqb; to produce the corresponding protic ammonium, onium, or triarylmethyl tetrakis( aryl)borate. The magnesium di&lsqb;tetrakis( aryl)borate&rsqb; can instead be reacted with a metal salt to form a metal tetrakis( aryl)borate. The produced metal tetrakis( aryl)borate can be further reacted with a protic ammonium salt, an onium salt, or a triarylmethyl salt to yield a protic ammonium, onium, or triarylmethyl tetrakis( aryl)borate. Certain of these tetrakis( aryl)borates can be conveniently purified via the formation of a liquid clathrate at ambient temperatures.

Process for producing a magnesium di&lsqb;tetrakis(Faryl)borate&rsqb; and products therefrom

Fluoroaryl Grignard reagents are produced from a hydrocarbyl Grignard reagent and fluoroaromatic compounds via separate additions of different fluoroaromatic compounds, such that the conversion of hydrocarbyl Grignard reagent to the desired fluoroaryl Grignard reagent is essentially complete, and thus the reaction product is free or essentially free of agents that may negatively affect subsequent reactions. The fluoroaryl Grignard reagents may be further reacted with boron trihalides in order to obtain tris(fluoroaryl)boranes or tetrakis(fluoroaryl)borates.

An alkali metal fluoride is reacted with a halomagnesium tetrakis(.sup.F aryl)borate to form an alkali metal tetrakis(.sup.F aryl)borate. The alkali metal tetrakis(.sup.F aryl)borate can be isolated, or the alkali metal cation can be replaced by an organic cation.
