A retrofit LED lighting system with a combination of a directional downlight component and an indirect uplight component is provided. The system comprises light emitting diodes arranged so as to replicate the function of a legacy light source in a transparent or translucent fixture housing. The LED lamp includes upwards facing LEDs emitting light upwards, and a translucent stem covering the uplight LEDs to allow the light from the LEDs to pass through it. Advantageously, the LED lamp with uplight component and a transparent/translucent stem allows the light to be directed upwards and hence, avoids having a sharp cut-off of light appearing in the middle of the reflector fixture and also avoids a lack of uplight shone on the ceiling.

Retrofit LED lighting system

A hybrid power architecture for lighting system that physically separates the conversion of AC-DC constant voltage power from the conversion of DC-DC constant current needed to drive the LEDs. The hybrid power architecture comprises a power converter to generate DC volt power, a battery backup unit for providing backup in the event of power failure and control architecture for controlling the intensity of the lighting system.

A retrofit LED lighting system for replacement of existing metal halide lamp driven by magnetic ballast is provided. The retrofit lamp includes a circuit that converts the AC current supplied by magnetic ballast to DC current required for illuminating the LEDs.

A luminaire providing wide angle up lighting using light wells is provided. The luminaire can include a frame having a center plate and side walls. LED modules can be disposed adjacent to opposite side walls such that the LED modules are oriented towards each other. The luminaire can include light wells positioned over each of the LED modules such that light emitted by the LED modules may be reflected within the light wells until it is transmitted by a lens region of the light well at a wide angle relative to the nadir of the luminaire. The light wells can include reflective layers disposed on all surfaces surrounding the LED modules, and a transmittance lens region through which light, emitted by the LED modules as point sources, can exit the fixture as a surface of light. Light emitted by LED modules and light wells disposed on opposite sides of the luminaire can provide a bat wing distribution of up light.

In one aspect, the present invention provides light emitting devices, including light fixtures and luminaires. In some embodiments, a light emitting device comprises at least one light source, a lightguide operable to receive light from the at least one light source at a first location on the lightguide, at least one light extraction region optically coupled to the lightguide and a substantially non-scattering region along a portion of the lightguide.

Light emitting devices and applications thereof

This is directed to a lens for use with a LED light source. The lens can be placed on a top surface of a light fixture to direct light emitted by a LED module at a wide angle relative to the top surface of the fixture. The lens can include an elongated trench in which several LED light sources can be placed in a line such that light emitted within the trench is re-directed by the lens. The lens can include one or more knobs extending over the trench to facilitate diverting emitted light in a more lateral direction, as opposed to vertical direction. In some cases, the lens can be constructed using an extrusion process by which a lens having a constant cross-section allowing for a wide angle radiation pattern is provided.

A lamp heat extractor device for lowering the cold spot temperature of a fluorescent lamp includes a base portion adapted to be attached to a heat conductive portion of the fluorescent lighting fixture proximate the fixture's lamp socket or sockets, and an extended sleeve end portion thermally connected to the base portion by a conductive connector portion. The conductive connector portion positions the extended sleeve portion so that it contacts the cold spot end of the fluorescent lamp or lamps held by the lamp sockets of the fixture to allow heat transfer to the fixture housing to which the heat extractor device is attached. Suitably, the outer surface of the extended sleeve end portion of the heat extractor device can have a plurality of radially extending fins for increasing surface area for heat radiation from the extended sleeve portion, thereby increasing the overall heat extracting efficiency of the device. The device can have two or more sleeve ends thermally interconnected to the base portion for contacting the cold spot ends of two or more fluorescent lamps.

A heat retaining sleeve for raising the cold spot temperature of a fluorescent lamp is comprised of a base end, a distal end, and a sleeve body sized and shaped to fit over the end of a fluorescent lamp or lamps where the lamp's cold spot exists. The sleeve creates a heat retaining air gap between the inner surface of the sleeve body and the lamp end or ends with the cold spot, and has sufficient length to so that, when fitted over the lamp end or ends, the cold spot temperature is elevated to a temperature that increase the lumen output of the fitted fluorescent lamp or lamps.
