The present disclosure covers systems and methods of efficiently filtering digital images. More particularly, the present disclosure covers systems and methods that generate and maintain a list of unique pixel values within a kernel window. Using the list, the systems and methods determine filtered pixel values for a filtered output image by processing only the counts of pixels in the histogram associated with the unique pixel values of the list. By considering selective pixel values of the histogram based on the unique pixel values of the list, the systems and methods reduce computations as part of the filtering process.

Efficient filtering of digital images

Techniques for locating features of interest in warped images are described. For example, a destination image is generated from a source image based on warping a portion of the source image according to a backward map. Each of the two images is associated with a mesh having a tile-based geometry. The backward map maps points from the destination mesh to pixels in the source image. Triangles are formed from the tiles of the destination mesh. A forward map is generated based on the triangles and the backward map. The forward map maps points from the source mesh to pixels in the destination image. A point from the source mesh is identified that corresponds to a pixel of a feature of interest. The forward map is applied to this point to locate a pixel in the destination image. This pixel corresponds to the location of the feature in the destination image.

Locating features in warped images

A set of pixels of a background element is identified according to a mask that defines a shape of a foreground element. A color value for a pixel of the foreground element is determined. The determining includes ascertaining a value of a measure of brightness of one or more pixels of a set of pixels of the background element and calculating the color value for the pixel of the foreground element based on the value of the measure of brightness and a value of an adjustable contrast variable. The calculating the color value for the pixel of the foreground element preserves in the foreground element a color component of the one or more pixels of the set of pixels of the background element and increases contrast with the value of the measure of brightness according to the value of the adjustable contrast variable.

Methods and apparatus for improved display of foreground elements

Methods, systems and computer program products are disclosed for displaying a preview of pixels to be effected by a brush tip area. Input is received for specifying one or more parameters defining a brush tip area. The one or more parameters include a size of the brush tip area. Pixels associated with a canvas in a display window are scanned. The scanned pixels are mapped back into the brush tip area according to a specified transform. A shape of a brush tip taper is calculated to indicate a softness or hardness of an edge of the brush tip area. An output color is composited to the scanned pixels based on the calculated shape of the brush tip taper. A preview representation is displayed of pixels effected by the brush tip area based on the compositing.

Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, for filtering an image including a plurality of pixels. A forward kernel centered at a first pixel in the image is received. The forward kernel assigns forward weights to pixels in a neighborhood surrounding the first pixel. A backward kernel centered at a second pixel within the neighborhood surrounding the first pixel is specified based on a local attribute of the image at the second pixel. The backward kernel assigns backward weights to pixels in a neighborhood surrounding the second pixel. A convolution weight of the second pixel is determined based on the backward kernel and the forward kernel. The convolution weight and a pixel value of the second pixel are used to generate a new value of the first pixel.

Using forward and backward kernels to filter images

Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, for filtering an image. A filter kernel is received to determine one or more filtered values for each pixel in a sequence of pixels, where adjacent pixels are separated by a characteristic distance in the image. A difference kernel is defined based on local differences between a first kernel and a second kernel that are defined by the filter kernel centered at a first location and a second location, respectively. The second location is separated from the first location by the characteristic distance separating adjacent pixels in the sequence. The difference kernel is used to determine a difference between filtered values of adjacent pixels in the sequence. For depth of field filtering, the filter kernel can include a blur filter kernel that is based upon depth values of pixels in the sequence.

Using difference kernels for image filtering

Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, implement techniques for modifying an image. A warping tool has a perimeter having a shape and a size. The warping tool has one or more associated vectors each of which originates at a mesh point defined by a tool mesh associated with the warping tool. User input is received specifying one or more of the shape of the perimeter, the tool mesh, and the associated vectors. The warping tool is used to modify the image.

A system for generating a warping effect in an image having a plurality of regions, each associated with a distortion vector. The system includes a programmable processor; and a computer-readable medium including a computer program product comprising instructions operable to cause the programmable processor to receive a source image; receive a user input specifying a movement; modify one or more distortion vectors of the distortion vector field; and modify the source image. The system also includes defining a path segment vector in response to user movement of a brush cursor; modifying one or more distortion vectors having originations covered by the cursor based on the path segment vector; and repeating defining and modifying to produce a warping effect.

A method and computer program product for generating a warping effect in an image having a plurality of regions, each associated with a distortion vector. The method includes defining a path segment vector in response to user movement of a brush cursor; modifying one or more distortion vectors having originations covered by the cursor based on the path segment vector; and repeating defining and modifying to produce a warping effect.

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for precise placement of discrete marks comprising a digital image using an optical sensor adapted to read individual dots of a variety of calibration patterns. The sensor is preferably coupled to a reciprocating carriage assembly so that the dot patterns recorded upon a printing media from at least two of a plurality of print heads disposed on the carriage assembly are compared, a preferred timing or trajectory control sequence is calculated, and thereafter relayed to the print heads to correct for physical misalignment of print heads, manufacturing tolerance errors, and the like to improve registration in a digital color print engine.
