A wireless access point controls Carrier Aggregation (CA) over a wireless repeater chain. The wireless access point exchanges signaling with User Equipment (UE) over the wireless repeater chain which uses a number of repeater hops. The wireless access point selects a radio frequency for a Primary Component Carrier (PCC) based on the number of repeater hops. The wireless access point exchanges user data with the UE over the wireless repeater chain using the selected radio frequency for the PCC. The wireless access point determines uplink throughput for the user data. The wireless access point re-selects the radio frequency for the PCC based on the number of repeater hops and the uplink throughput. The wireless access point exchanges additional user data with the UE over the wireless repeater chain using the re-selected radio frequency for the PCC.

When a base station that does not support downlink beamforming is serving a UE and a guaranteed-bit-rate (GBR) bearer is established for the UE, the base station will detect the establishment of the GBR bearer for the UE and will responsively trigger handover of the UE to another base station selected based on the other base station supporting downlink beamforming. With this process, handing the UE over to a base station that supports downlink beamforming may thereby help to ensure successful transmission to the UE at the GBR associated with the bearer.

A wireless access point to control Carrier Aggregation (CA) over a wireless repeater chain. The wireless access point wirelessly exchanges network signaling with User Equipment (UE) over the wireless repeater chain using a number of repeater hops. The wireless access point processes the number of repeater hops to select a radio frequency for a CA Primary Component Carrier (PCC) and to select an amount of CA Secondary Component Carriers (SCCs) for the UE. The wireless access point wirelessly exchanges user data with the UE over the wireless repeater chain using the selected radio frequency for the CA PCC and using the selected amount of the CA SCCs.

A frame configuration is assigned in a relay enabled communication network. A macro coverage latency is determined. The macro coverage latency is a latency of a communication between the wireless device and a network node when the wireless device is not communicating through the relay node. A relay coverage latency is determined. The relay coverage latency is a latency of a communication between the wireless device and the network node when the wireless device is communicating through the relay node. Based on a comparison of the macro coverage latency and the relay coverage latency, a frame configuration is selected for a communication through the relay node.

A wireless communication system restricts resource block usage in wireless repeaters. The wireless communication system includes a wireless access point configured to transfer user data for User Equipment (UEs) wherein some of the UEs are connected to the wireless repeaters. The wireless access point is further configured to determine an average uplink transmission power for the UEs, and if the average uplink transmission power for the UEs exceeds an uplink transmission power threshold, then the wireless access point is configured to determine resource block restrictions for the wireless repeaters. The wireless access point is also configured to transfer the resource block restrictions for delivery to the wireless repeaters.

A method and system to assign a contention-free access resource is disclosed. A first network may be configured to serve user equipment devices (UEs) according to a first protocol and a second network may be configured to serve UEs according to a second protocol. The method involves the first network detecting an attempt to set up a circuit-switched-fallback (CSFB) call between (i) a UE served by the first network and (ii) a remote party, where the CSFB call is to be served by the second network to which the UE would transition to be served with the CSFB call. The method further involves, in response to detecting the attempt to set up the CSFB call, the first network assigning a contention-free access resource to the UE, so as to allow a contention-free access request by the UE to the first network.

Systems and methods for allocating frequencies based on group delay variation considerations include a base station that operates in a frequency range comprising a first set of frequency groups and a second set of frequency groups, where frequency groups of the first set are less susceptible to group delay variation based impairments than the frequency groups of the second set. In response to a requirement to transmit data between the base station and a particular UE, the base station determines whether the particular UE is receiving wireless service directly from the base station or via a relay associated with the base station, and when the particular UE is receiving wireless service via the relay, the base station allocates one or more frequency groups from the first set of frequency groups to use for transmitting data between the base station and the particular UE to satisfy the requirement.

A wireless repeater chain exerts frequency control. A source wireless repeater wirelessly repeats a Radio Frequency (RF) signal that comprises multiple component frequencies. A target wireless repeater wirelessly receives and processes the repeated RF signal to determine frequency responses through the wireless repeater chain for each of the multiple component frequencies. The target wireless repeater processes the frequency responses to determine frequency gains for each of the multiple component frequencies. The target wireless repeater wirelessly transfers the frequency gains for each of the multiple component frequencies for delivery to the source wireless repeater. The source wireless repeater wirelessly receives the frequency gains for each of the multiple component frequencies and responsively applies the frequency gains to the multiple component frequencies.

A relay wireless device is configured to function as a relay on behalf of a donor access node. The relay wireless device determines a preferred donor access node from among a plurality of candidate donor access nodes based on a comparison with a number of thresholds for reliable and efficient provision of services to end-user wireless devices via the relay wireless device. Any access node that meets the threshold requirements is added to a list of candidate donor access nodes. The candidate donor access node that best meets the thresholds may be selected as the preferred donor access node, and a connection request submitted to the preferred donor access node.

A method of managing modulation for transmission of data in anticipation of handover. When a source base station is serving a UE and determines that the UE is going to hand over to a target base station, the source base station automatically transitions to transmit data to the UE with a low-order MCS selected without regard to CQIs reported by the UE, or at least to apply an MCS corresponding with a CQI lower than that reported by the UE. By applying a low-order MCS to transmit data to the UE, the source base station may increase the likelihood that the data will arrive successfully at the UE, as the low-order MCS may be more tolerant to noise than higher-order MCSs.

Management of modulation for transmission of data in anticipation of handover

During the operation of a radio access network (RAN), the RAN will determine a measure of capacity of a frequency channel based on a modulation quality (Rho) of the frequency channel and will intelligently manage use of the frequency channel based on the determined Rho. Through this process, the RAN may thereby attempt to serve each WCD with an appropriate level of service by reducing a maximum load level for the frequency channel. In response to a WCD attempting to register on a frequency channel, the RAN may determine if registering the WCD would cause a current load level to exceed the maximum load level of the frequency channel. If registering would cause a current load level of the frequency channel to exceed the maximum load level, the RAN may cause the WCD to register on a different frequency channel. If not, the RAN may allow the registration.

Optimizing wireless network capacity based on rho value

A wireless network includes first-configuration sectors with a first frequency assignment and second-configuration sectors with a second frequency assignment. When served by a first-configuration sector that borders a second-configuration sector, the mobile station receives (i) a neighbor list that identifies neighbor sectors of the primary sector, including the second-configuration sector, (ii) a primary-sector reference distance between a transmitter for the primary sector and a reference point in the primary sector, and (iii) a neighbor-sector reference distance between a transmitter for the second-configuration sector and the reference point. Based on the reference distances, the mobile station calculates a border distance between the primary sector's transmitter and a border between the sectors. The mobile station compares its distance from the primary sector's transmitter to the primary-sector reference distance and/or border distance. Based on the comparison, the mobile station selects a scanning algorithm that determines when to scan for the second-configuration sector.
