A cutter assembly includes a substrate and at least one island. The substrate includes a surface circumscribed by a peripheral edge, a flank surface extending from the peripheral edge, and at least one pocket with an opening on the surface and spaced apart from the peripheral edge. The at least one pocket extends from the opening towards an interior of the substrate. The at least one island is in the at least one pocket, and the at least one island includes a cutting surface that is exposed by the opening of the at least one pocket.

A non-rotating mining cutter pick has a shank portion with a non-circular cross-section, a head portion including a tip region distal from the shank portion, a shoulder portion separating the shank portion from the head portion, and a cutting insert mounted at a front end of the tip region. The cutting insert includes a body formed of tungsten carbide and an element formed of a superhard material, such as PCD or other material having a prescribed knoop hardness. At least a portion of a first surface of the element is exposed on a cutting surface of the cutting insert, which improves wear properties of the mining cutter pick. The element is fused to the body of the cutting insert, preferably in a high pressure-high temperature (HPHT) process. A method of manufacture and a cutting machine incorporating the non-rotating mining cutter pick on the rotatable element are also disclosed.

A method for removing defects at high pressure and high temperature (HP/HT) or for relieving strain in a non-diamond crystal commences by providing a crystal, which contains defects, and a pressure medium. The crystal and the pressure medium are disposed in a high pressure cell and placed in a high pressure apparatus, for processing under reaction conditions of sufficiently high pressure and high temperature for a time adequate for one or more of removing defects or relieving strain in the single crystal.

The invention also includes methods of filling the capsule with the solvent and sealing the capsule, as well as an apparatus for sealing the capsule.

Product forming molds have surfaces conformally coated with a coating composite comprising superabrasive particles. In one embodiment, the mold surface is plated (electrolessly or electrolytically) or coated with a metal having superabrasive particles dispersed therein. In another embodiment, the composite is a SiC composite having superabrasive particles dispersed therein.

A jadeite material has a thickness in excess of about 1.0 mm and CIELAB indices of L*&#x3e;42, a*&#x3c;&#x2212;6, and b*&#x3e;+6. The grain size of the jadeite material is less than about 30 microns and is an equiaxed grain structure. The jadeite material has an optical transmission peak between 500 and 565 nm with an I/Ioptical transmission ratio of over 40%. The first step in making the jadeite material is to wrap a glass block, convertible by HP/HT into jadeite and having a nominal composition of NaAlSiO, with a graphite or refractive metal sheet. The wrapped glass block is placed in an HP/HT apparatus, rapidly heated, and subjected therein to a pressure in excess of about 3 GPa and a temperature in excess of about 1000&#xb0; C. for a time adequate to convert the glass block into jadeite. The jadeite material then is cooled and the pressure subsequently released.

A perovskite feedstock (powder or preform) is placed in a high-pressure cell of a high pressure/high temperature (HP/HT) apparatus and subjected to pressures in excess of about 2 kbar and temperatures above about 800&deg; C. for a time adequate to increase the density of the preform.

The present invention discloses a new surface geometry of a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) cutter whereby large chips are prevented from forming in front of the cutter. The surface geometry includes recess(es) and/or raised region(s) that can act as chip breakers and also increase turbulence in the flow across the face of the cutter and thus increase the Heat transfer coefficient and reduce drag. PCD surface's geometric configuration is formed in the high temperature/high heat (HT/HP) process and is therefore integral with the cutter. This invention thus provides a polycrystalline cutter with improved cutting capability by preventing chip build up and enhanced heat transfer resulting in a cooler cutting edge temperature.
