The present invention relates to a process comprising the steps of a) contacting an aqueous dispersion of a TiOslurry containing adsorbing dispersant with an adsorbing latex to form a mixture, wherein the pH of the mixture of the TiOslurry and adsorbing latex are sufficiently high to inhibit interaction between the TiOand the adsorbing latex; then b) lowering the pH of the mixture of step a) sufficiently to promote interaction between the TiOand the adsorbing latex, thereby forming a composite. The process of the present invention provides for improved hiding and reduced grit for coatings compositions.

Process for improving hiding efficiency in pigmented paints

This invention provides a multistage emulsion polymer including, as copolymerized units: from 0.5% to 5%, by weight P-acid monomer, based on the weight of the emulsion polymer; from 0% to 0.05% by weight multiethylenically unsaturated monomer, based on the weight of the emulsion polymer; and at least one second monoethylenically unsaturated monomer; the emulsion polymer having a calculated Tg of from &#x2212;20&#xb0; C. to 50&#xb0; C.; the emulsion polymer is formed by the 'pulsed' addition of 75% to 100% of the P-acid monomer during a stage including from 10% to 50% of the total monomer weight, preferably added during the relatively early stages of the polymerization. A multistage polymer/TiO2 composite particle and an aqueous coating composition including the composite particle are also provided.

Multistage emulsion polymer and improved pigment efficiency

This invention provides a method for forming a stable aqueous composition including composite particles by admixing TiO2 particles and adsorbing emulsion polymer particles at or below the critical composite ratio to an equilibrated viscosity range of from 200 cps to 4000 cps. Also provided is a method for forming a stable aqueous composition including composite particles by admixing TiO2 particles and adsorbing emulsion polymer particles at a mixing intensity of greater than 2 hp/kgal. A method for providing a coating including composite particles is also included.

A paint manufacturing method includes receiving each of a group of fluid prepaints at different inputs of a fluid component mixing system, determining at a computer system a first fluid prepaint ratio, and mixing the fluid prepaints in accordance with the first ratio to form a base paint at an output of the mixing system. A paint manufacturing system includes a computer-controlled prepaint mixing system. The prepaint mixing system includes multiple fluid inputs providing for computer-controllable flow of prepaints into the mixing system. The computer system includes a memory storing software instructions that configured the computer system to receive user input selecting a base paint to be produced, determine a ratio of fluid prepaints needed to produce the base paint, and regulate each fluid flow control to establish, in the determined ratio, a flow of fluid prepaints entering the fluid mixing system. A paint manufacturing system includes multiple paint manufacturing sites that can each produce paint products. Each manufacturing site includes a site control computer to control a paint manufacturing process at the site and the system also includes a coordinating computer system that can exchange manufacturing operations data with each of the site control computers.

Methods of providing a paint line containing a latex polymeric binder are described. A range of paints can be formulated using sets of prepaints, at least one of which contains a latex polymeric binder. The paints may be applied as architectural coatings, industrial coatings, graphic arts coating, elastomeric coatings, and non-cementitious, aggregate finish coatings suitable for application on a wall directly or as a topcoat in exterior insulation finishing systems.

A process for preparing large dimension emulsion polymer particles and the polymer products of the process are disclosed. In one embodiment, the invention provides particles having a high aspect ratio, having a shape described by a long axis and an intersecting short axis. These particles range in shape from egg-like, through rod-like, up to extended filaments. In another embodiment, the invention relates to large, nearly spherical emulsion polymer particles.
