An ultrasonic inspection system, method, and software. In one embodiment, the ultrasonic inspection system includes an ultrasonic probe that directs ultrasound waves into a structure from a front wall, and receives reflected waves to generate a response signal. The system further includes a processor that rectifies the response signal to generate a rectified signal, integrates a portion of the rectified signal within a detection time window to determine an energy sum, and generates output based on the energy sum. The detection time window is restricted to a front wall reflection and at least a portion of a near-surface dead zone following the front wall reflection.

A method is provided that includes monitoring a process of manufacturing a composite structure that includes introducing a matrix material to a reinforcement material, applying the reinforcement material into a mold cavity or onto a mold surface with a first machine tool, subjecting the matrix material to a melding event with a second machine tool, and inspecting the composite structure. Data including at least one of first measurement data, error data or second measurement data is determined, and an analysis of the data is performed to summarize the data and thereby produce feedback data including a summary of the data. At least one of the process, the first machine tool or the second machine tool is adjusted based on feedback including the summary, and for manufacture of a next composite structure.

Data-driven decisions for improved composite manufacturing

A method and system may be provided for determining a set of parameters for preparing a skin for assembly to a substructure. The skin may be nondestructively inspected to gather a data set relating to the skin thickness. Sets of as-built thickness values for the skin and of deviations from a nominal map of the skin thickness may be calculated. A mating area for the skin and substructure and a set of one or more locations for fastener holes in the mating area may be determined. A set of parameters for the one or more fastener holes and a set of one or more fastener lengths may be generated using the deviations. A tool may cut the one or more fastener holes using the set of parameters and the skin and substructure may be fastened using fasteners selected according to the generated set of one or more fastener lengths. The system may be used with a numerically-controlled machine, a nondestructive inspection system, and may include a computer coupled to the nondestructive inspection system for calculating the parameters for preparing the holes and the lengths of the one or more fasteners.
