This invention relates to a coiler using tongue and groove rollers preferably for measuring sliver thickness and guiding sliver emerging from between these rollers, using guide means such as a pair of calender rollers driven for rotation in the same conveying direction. Optionally the sliver between the conveying nip at the tongue and groove rollers and the guide means (when embodied as calender rollers) is severed by intermittent operation of the conveying and guiding nips.

Coiler and autoleveller

A modular cylinder comprises a plurality of, in this case 24, modules each having a tongue to engage a groove of its neighbour and each either having a camming ramp to engage a camming ramp of its neighbour, or a filler rod inserted between adjacent modules at each interface. Where the camming means are provided, (n - 1) of the modules defining an almost complete cylinder and can then be strained in a radially outward direction to provide space for the final module which is placed in position by sliding longitudinally of the gap. Where the filler rods are used, all of the n modules may be loosely assembled in a first operation and the filler rods can be inserted in a second operation to pre-stress the cylinder. First filler rods of undersized type may be installed to hold the array of a module in loosely assembled configuration, and these may then be sequentially replaced by correctly sized larger filler rods.

Method of forming a lightweight cylinder

A modular cylinder comprises a plurality of, in this case 24, modules each having a tongue to engage a groove of its neighbor and each either having a camming ramp to engage a camming ramp of its neighbor, or a filler rod inserted between adjacent modules at each interface. Where the camming means are provided, (n-1) of the modules can be placed into engagement to define an almost complete cylinder and can then be strained in a radially outward direction to provide space for the final module which is placed in position by sliding longitudinally of the gap. Where the filler rods are used, all of the n modules may be loosely assembled in a first operation and the filler rods can be inserted in a second operation to pre-stress the cylinder. The radially outer panel of each module has a biconvex cross-section whereby the outer surface thereof defines a sector of the cylindrical surface of the finished modular cylinder but the neutral axis of bending of the panel is straight and parallel to the tangent of the outer surface at the center of the cross-section of that outer panel. If desired, at least one reinforcing hoop may be placed inside the modular cylinder to increase its rigidity.

Lightweight cylinder construction

A drive between an autoleveller output and a coiler in a carding and deposition assembly comprises slack take-up means, and means for varying the length of the sliver path. In a belt drive, the slack take-up is effected on both sides of the belt drive by dancing pulleys. These may be resiliently biassed, either by a helical tension spring, by the belt elasticity and pulley geometry, or other suitable means.

Drive between an autoleveller and a coiler

A damper assembly comprises a cylinder enclosing a plunger mounted on a piston rod and associated with an auxiliary plunger which is yieldably held against the main plunger by a spring. Ascent of the cylinder relative to the plunger allows a high damping force to be obtained by causing the damping liquid to pass around the exterior of the main plunger, along a first flow path, whereas descent of the cylinder allows the spring to yield and to open a larger cross-section third flow path between the auxiliary plunger and the main plunger for a lower damping force to be obtained. The damping force exerted in the first-mentioned direction is limited by the effect of a pressure relief valve which opens to allow flow of hydraulic fluid through the auxiliary plunger along a second flow path once a predetermined damper force has been attained. The cylinder is coaxially surrounded by a pre-load spring. The damper is incorporated in an anti-bounce package support in a yarn winder.

Vibration damper

The perforated roller of a friction spinning unit includes an outer sleeve having vent openings at one end to provide an air leakage path which by-passes the adjacent bearing of the sleeve, and further by-passing vent passages radially outwardly of the bearing at the opposite end of the sleeve.

Friction spinning roller

A multi-position open-end spinning machine has the directions of traverse of the traverse guides of some groups of its spinning positions opposed to the simultaneous direction of traverse of the traverse guides of the spinning positions in other groups. Alternatively some traverse guides in a particular group of spinning positions may be in opposition to other traverse guides in the same group. The phase angles of the traverse guide motions may be distributed to have several different phase angles along the machine for noise reduction. The invention may also be applied to any multi-position winding machine.

Multi-position yarn spinning/winding apparatus

A drive ram, particularly for a yarn winder, has the piston rod freely movable relative to both the piston and the ram cylinder in a first condition in which a locking washer is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the piston rod. Upon application of fluid pressure to effect relative movement of the piston and the cylinder, the locking washer is spring-urged against a wedge-like tipping washer which skews the lockingwasher and causes it to clamp the piston rod whereby the piston rod is then driven by the ram through a predetermined travel, from a starting position which is governed only by the diameter of the package at the time of operation of the package lift mechanism. This allows a virtually constant lift travel of the ram, regardless of the diameter of the package at the time of operation of the ram.

Fluid-operated ram

A rotor for an open end yarn spinner is disclosed having a depending boss with a bore therethrough for interference fit with a supporting shaft, wherein the boss is formed with an annular concave recess proximal its juncture with the base of the cup portion of the rotor and its lower cup wall. Flexural distortion at high rotational speeds of from 45,000 to 60,000 or more r.p.m. occurs primarily at the area of the recess and is minimized at the region of interference fit such that the grip on the supporting shaft is not substantially loosened and the rotor mounted thereon is not shifted or dislodged.

Open end spinning rotor with special boss

Disclosed is a method of manufacture of a rotor for the open end spinning of staple fibres into yarn which is formed of a steel and has hardened surfaces at its fiber contacting and collecting surfaces, wherein the rotor may be fashioned by machining from a block of steel or formed from sheet steel, then hardening its internal fiber contacting surfaces by induction heating or carburizing or nitriding or carbonitriding at least in the region of the rotor's maximum diameter, then quenching and thereafter stress-relieving the entire rotor. Such method provides a rotor with exceptional properties of wear resistance in the area most prone to abrasive wear which latter otherwise reduces the rotor's useful service life and substantially increases yarn processing costs.

A method of open-end spinning textile yarn provides the steps during spinning of feeding fibres to a spinning means acting to twist the fibres fed thereto into a tail end of a yarn and withdrawing from the spinning means the continuously formed twisted yarn, and the further step following an interruption in spinning and preparatory to restarting spinning of applying with the spinning means stopped a longitudinal reciprocating motion to the tail end of the yarn to remove excess twist therefrom.
