A light transmissive substrate that transforms light having a Lambertian distribution includes a substrate having a plurality of microstructures on a first surface, where each of the plurality of microstructures comprises an array of folded micro-pyramid microstructures, wherein each folded micro-pyramid microstructure comprises a base section with a roof angle and a recess being formed in a shape of a micro-pyramid and comprising a recess roof angle, wherein light having a Lambertian distribution that enters the first surface of the substrate is transformed into light having a distribution with a maximum intensity at an angle away from nadir and a minimum intensity at nadir that exits a second surface of the substrate.

Microstructures for transforming light having lambertian distribution into batwing distributions

A light transmissive substrate for transforming a Lambertian light distribution into a batwing light distribution. The light transmissive substrate includes a first surface comprising a plurality of microstructures, and a second surface on a side of the substrate opposite the first surface. The substrate is configured to receive light in a Lambertian distribution from a light source at the first surface and transform the light into a batwing distribution exiting the second surface. The batwing distribution having a peak intensity at about ±30° to about ±60° from X and Y axes, and a minimum intensity at nadir.

Methods for creating apertures in a layer on a back side of a substrate that includes a microlens array on a front side thereof include curving the substrate into a cylindrical surface segment that defines an axis, so that the microlens array on the front side of the substrate faces the axis. A pulsed laser beam is scanned from the axis circumferentially along the cylindrical surface segment, to pass through the microlens array on the front side of the substrate and into the layer on the back side of the substrate to create the apertures, while simultaneously translating the substrate and/or the scanned pulsed laser beam axially relative to one another. Methods and apparatus for creating apertures through microlens arrays using curved cradles

A tool for holding tungsten electrodes for sharpening by an abrasive wheel has a generally cylindrical body with an axial bore at each end for receiving an electrode. The bores have different diameters for use with two sizes of electrodes. The bore is sized to provide a gap between the electrode and the wall of the bore so as to allow the electrode to rotate when held against the wheel. The tool enables the electrode to be held against the grinding wheel at an angle as required for producing a sharp point.

A furnace and associated heat storage assembly includes a firebox arranged within a rock storage area that incorporates a recirculating flue arrangement for returning unburned gases to below a fuel grate for mixing with fresh inlet air. The rock in the heat storage area is heated by conduction of heat from the firebox, circulating flue gases and a smoke exhaust flue. Inlet air is preheated. An open grate arrangement provides for efficient burning of solid as-producing fuel. A system for circulating air and/or liquid through the rock can be provided, as can a water storage tank.
