Compounds having the formula ##STR1## in which R is lower alkyl; X is halogen or lower alkyl; m is 1 or 2; and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3, are effective biocides or biostats for protection of plastic or polymeric materials against attack by microorganisms, and for controlling or inhibiting the growth of algae.

3-(Alkoxyphenylsulfonyl)acrylonitriles

1-Acryloyl-3-(substituted)phenyl ureas have been found to be highly effective as fungicides when incorporated into or applied to agricultural media, plastics, paints or the like.

Biocides for protection of polymeric materials

The addition of a combination of CH.sub.3 SO.sub.2 CHI.sub.2 and certain chelating agents to cutting fluid prevents bacterial and fungal growth. Concentrated aqueous co-dispersions thereof are particularly useful.

Biocidal additive for cutting fluids

1-Acryloyl ureas carrying a cyano-, carbamoyl- or carbalkoxy-phenyl group on the 3-position have been found to be highly effective as fungicides when incorporated into or applied to agricultural media, plastics, paints or the like.

1-Acryloyl-3-(substituted) phenyl ureas

The addition of a 2-mercaptobenzamide to cutting fluid prevents bacterial and fungal growth. Concentrated solutions thereof in certain organic solvents are also disclosed. One such solution provides additional protection against corrosion of the metal surfaces.

By the addition of a relatively small amount of N-(phenoxyphenyl)maleimide or the corresponding 3,4-dichloromaleimide, synthetic films or plastics or woven or knitted synthetic or cellulosic fabrics can be protected against fungal and bacterial deterioration.

Industrial biocide

Protection against certain aquatic pests can be obtained by use of certain alkyl tin dithiocarbamates in the coating for materials exposed to such pests or the aquatic enivornment in contact with these materials.
