A system includes a filter device that has, in serial flow order, an adsorbent bed, a biocide filter, and a particle filter. The adsorbent bed includes adsorbent media that is configured to remove organic compounds from feed water that are capable of forming an adherent layer on a porous surface of a sublimator, and the biocide filter contains a halogen-release material.

A reactor system may comprise a housing; and a condensation catalyst layer within the housing comprising a condensation catalyst comprised of at least one of a base-substituted zeolite, a stannous salt, or a phosphonitrile chloride. The condensation catalyst layer may be configured to catalyze a condensation reaction of a plurality of silane diols in water flowing through the housing into a plurality of siloxanes.

The hydrophilic coating further includes a wetting agent configured to provide wettability for the hydrophilic coating. The hydrophilic coating further includes an antibacterial agent configured to eliminate at least a portion of bacteria that contacts the hydrophilic coating. The hydrophilic coating further includes an antifungal agent configured to eliminate at least a portion of fungi that contacts the hydrophilic coating, the antifungal agent being different than the antibacterial agent and the insolubilizer.

A thermal management system includes a space structure, a feed water container, a water feed line, a pump, and a filter device. The space structure includes a heat source connected with a fluid loop for conveying a working fluid through the heat source to regulate temperature and a sublimator connected with the fluid loop to receive the working fluid. The sublimator has a porous surface. The water feed line is connected with the container and the sublimator. The pump is located in the feed water line and is operable to move the feed water from the container to the sublimator. The sublimator is operable to cool the working fluid using the porous surface. The filter device is located in the water feed line between the pump and the feed water container. The filter device includes an adsorbent bed to remove organic compounds.

A thermal management system includes a sublimator that has a porous plate, a water feed line connected with the sublimator for delivering feed water to the porous plate, and an adsorbent bed in the water feed line. The sublimator is operable to freeze and sublime the feed water using the porous plate. The adsorbent bed is configured to substantially remove organic compounds from the feed water.

A water treatment system includes an adsorbent bed, a halogen-release material downstream of, and adjacent to, the adsorbent bed, and a passive halogen barrier intermediate of the adsorbent bed and the halogen-release material.

A hydrophilic coating system may comprise a second coating disposed on a condensing surface, the second coating comprising a second adhesive agent, a second insolubilizer, a second inorganic compound, and a second antimicrobial agent. The second coating may comprise between 40% and 50% by weight second adhesive agent, between 12% and 16% by weight second insolubilizer, between 30% and 40% by weight second inorganic compound, and between 3% and 4% by weight second antimicrobial agent.

The sublimation capability of a porous metal plate used in a sublimator is maintained by heating the porous metal plate at an elevated temperature in a flowing stream of oxygen for an extended period of time to form an oxidized surface. A short chain molecule, such as citric acid, is attached to the oxidized surface having multiple functional carboxylate groups and no hydrophobic tail.

Surface treatment to passivate sublimation surfaces to hydrophobic contaminants

A method of analyzing for the presence or concentration of an analyte in a liquid in microgravity is disclosed. The method includes removing a first quantity of the liquid from a first container and passing the removed liquid through a porous pad that includes a reagent that is responsive to the analyte. The presence or concentration of the analyte in the liquid is determined based on a response of the reagent. The removed quantity of liquid is transferred back to the first container or to a second container, and followed by disposal of the first or second container.

Microgravity-compatible analysis

A method of remediating a water-based fluid includes the steps of providing a container providing a fluid cavity and organic, inorganic and biological remediation media within the cavity. The container is tubular and provides a linear flow direction, organic, inorganic and biological remediation media arranged in the cavity and configured to permit a water-based fluid within the cavity to simultaneously flow through the media. The organic, the inorganic and the biological remediation media are respectively configured to remove organic, inorganic and microbiological constituents. The organic, inorganic and biological remediation media are arranged within the cavity along the linear flow direction. Multiple cartridges are arranged within the cavity and spaced apart from one another. A predetermined flow rate of the water-based fluid through the cavity is set and it concurrently removes organic, inorganic and iodine-based biocide contaminants from the fluid within the cavity.

According to one aspect of the invention, a heat transfer system comprises a heat transfer fluid circulation loop. The heat transfer system includes a heat exchanger disposed in the heat transfer fluid circulation loop. The heat transfer fluid is an aqueous solution having a pH of 7.8 to 8.0 that comprises from 1.00 wt. % to 1.20 wt. % of a buffer composition comprising sodium and/or potassium salts of borate, carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, from 0.40 wt. % to 0.60 wt. % of a straight chain aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, from 0.90 wt. % to 1.10 wt. % of a branched aliphatic carboxylic acid, from 0.40 wt. % to 0.60 wt. % of an aromatic carboxylic acid, from 0.04 wt. % to 0.08 wt. % of a molybdate salt, and from 0.01 wt. % to 0.03 wt. % of an aldehyde biocide, based on the total weight of the heat transfer fluid.
