An arc discharge lamp has an arc chamber with an amalgam tip attached to and communicating with the arc chamber through a constricted area. An amalgam retainer is positioned in the arc chamber and is abutted against the constricted area. The amalgam retainer is vibration-insensitive, solid and liquid amalgam impervious and mercury vapor pervious. An amalgam is contained within the amalgam tip.

An arc discharge lamp has an evacuated, electromagnetic-energy-transmissive envelope having therein an arc generating and sustaining medium. At least one thermionic, electron-emitting cathode is positioned within the envelope, and the cathode has an electron emissive coating thereon containing silicon carbide.

A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp, which is equipped with Hg or amalgam, has a pumping tube opening (4) with constricted cross-section or lumen. A solid body in the pumping tube (3) prevents the mercury from emerging into the discharge space. At the same time, the particular shape of the constriction and of the solid body, respectively, makes it possible for Hg vapor to diffuse through-passages between the pumping tube and the solid body into discharge vessel.

An electric lamp includes a tubular lamp envelope enclosing mercury vapor and a buffer gas, and a flag assembly located within the lamp envelope. The lamp envelope has a pair of dimples on an inside surface thereof. The flag assembly includes a support wire having opposite ends secured to the dimples and a starting flag attached to the support wire. The starting flag includes a mercury-absorbing material. The lamp envelope may be a closed loop electrodeless lamp envelope or a conventional electroded fluorescent lamp envelope.

A fluorescent lamp is disclosed containing a deposit of a dried metal hydride-containing paste. The dried metal hydride-containing paste has a decomposition temperature higher than the temperature present during normal lamp operation. At the end of the lamp life, an increase in lamp temperature decomposes the metal hydride-containing paste and releases hydrogen within the lamp. The presence of hydrogen causes the lamp to extinguish passively without significant end heating or glass cracking.

A fluorescent lamp comprises a glass tube, an electrode at each end of the tube, each of the electrodes including a pair of lead wires extending through each sealed end of the tube and joined to a coil, and a capsule containing metal hydride disposed in the tube and having a decomposition temperature higher than temperatures within the tube during normal operation of the lamp.

A method for recrystallization of tungsten filaments for incandescent lamps includes the steps of providing a tungsten filament fixed to lead-in wires, providing a light-transmitting glass envelope having a closed first end and an open second end, the first end being closed by an envelope press portion integral with the remainder of the envelope, the press portion having the lead-in wires sealed therein and extending therethrough into the envelope, introducing a forming gas into the envelope, flushing the envelope with infusions of the forming gas, flashing the filament in the presence of the forming gas to recrystallize the filament, evacuating the forming gas from the envelope, introducing fill gas into the envelope, and closing the envelope second end.

A negative glow fluorescent lamp includes a light-transmissive envelope enclosing a fill material which emits ultraviolet radiation upon excitation, a phosphor coating on an inner surface of the envelope, the phosphor coating emitting visible light upon absorption of ultraviolet radiation, a cathode located within the envelope for emitting electrons, first and second cathode leads extending through the envelope, an anode located in the envelope and spaced from the cathode for collecting electrons and first and second diodes coupled between opposite ends of the anode and the first and second cathode leads, respectively. The glow lamp can include one or more insulating discharge barriers which surround the cathode and block electron bombardment of the cathode during positive half cycles of the AC voltage. The discharge barriers are preferably as large in area as is practical and can be coated with an ultraviolet-reflecting material or with a phosphor layer. The glow lamp operates from an AC voltage and requires only two electrical connections. Lumen maintenance is improved because electron bombardment of the cathode is eliminated. A simple, low-cost ballast can be utilized.

A method is provided for constructing an electric lamp such as, for example, a tungsten halogen capsule, using carbon monoxide as a reducing gas to remove oxides from lamp components during the manufacture thereof. To this end, prior to evacuation the lamp envelope is filled with a forming gas such as, for example, a carbon monoxide- nitrogen mixture, and the envelope is given one or more light-ups to thereby deoxidize the lamp components.

A glow discharge starter having an hermetically sealed envelope of vitreous material, a seal located at one end thereof and containing an ionizable medium. A pair of electrical conductors extend through the seal and terminate in a spaced relationship to form a pair of electrodes within the envelope. At least one of the electrodes has a bimetallic element secured thereto. The bimetallic element is deformable by heat into engagement with the other of the electrodes. Gettering means contained within the envelope reduces dark effect by improving dark starting and reduces aging time of the glow discharge starter. Preferably, the gettering means is a metal selected from the group consisting of bismuth and lead.
