2',3'-Dideoxy-3'-fluoro pyrimidine nucleosides particularly 2', 3'-dideoxy-3'-fluorothymidine have been found to have particularly potent activity against adenovirus infections especially those caused by adenoviruses of scrotype 8. Such compounds are preferably presented in pharmaceutical formulations adapted for ophthalmic administration.

Treatment of adenovical infections with 3'-fluoro-5-halo uracil compounds

Antiviral compounds

The present invention relates to the use of 2'-deoxy-5-ethynyluridine and its pharmaceutically acceptable derivatives in the treatment and prophylaxis of varicella zoster virus and cytomegalovirus infections. Also provided are pharmaceutical formulations and processes for the preparation of the compounds according to the invention.

A method of treating or preventing viral infections, in particular rhinovirus infections comprising the administration of an effective amount of a 2-phenyltetralin derivative or a heterocyclic analogue thereof. Pharmaceutical compositions containing these compounds, and some novel compounds are also disclosed.

Chemotherapeutic agents

2-Pyridyl chroman and derivatives thereof have been discovered to have potent anti-viral activities, i.e. particular against rhinovirus. Novel compounds and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts, pharmaceutical formulations containing the compounds of this invention and the treatment of viral infections with these formulations are all disclosed. 2-(3-Pyridyl)chroman and 6-chloro-2-(3-pyridyl)chroman are examples of especially active compounds of this invention.

Novel compounds of formula (IID) ##STR1## wherein either both X and Y represent groups independently selected from amino and lower alkylamino, or one of X and Y represents a group selected from amino and lower alkylamino and the other of X and Y represents a hydrogen atom have been found to be active against rhinoviruses and other viruses. Processes for producing these compounds include reduction of flavanone derivatives or of flavenes. Alternatively, reductive cyclization of chalcones affords the compounds. These may also be prepared by condensation of o-(substituted methyl)phenols with styrene derivatives. Pharmaceutical formulations and methods for the administration of the compounds are described.
