Aspects of the disclosure provide a microfluidic chip to facilitate DNA analysis. The microfluidic chip includes a first domain configured for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of DNA fragments, a dilution domain coupled to the first domain to dilute a PCR mixture received from the first domain, and a second domain that is coupled to the dilution domain so as to receive the amplified DNA fragments. The second domain includes a separation channel that is configured to perform electrophoretic separation of the amplified DNA fragments. In addition, the disclosure provides a DNA analyzer to act on the microfluidic chip to perform an integrated single chip DNA analysis.

DNA analyzer

Aspects of the disclosure provides a DNA analyzer to facilitate an integrated single-chip DNA analysis. The DNA analyzer includes an interface for coupling a microfluidic chip to the DNA analyzer. The microfluidic chip includes a first domain configured for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of DNA fragments, and a second domain fluidically coupled to the first domain to receive the DNA fragments and perform electrophoretic separation of the DNA fragments. The DNA fragments are tagged with fluorescent labels. The DNA analyzer includes a detection module to excite the fluorescent labels to emit fluorescence and detect the emitted fluorescence. The detection module includes a laser source, a set of optical elements, a filter module and a photo-detector.

A conductive polymer and a semiconducting carbon nanotube material are combined to form a highly conductive composite. The composite can be used for EMI shielding, optical sensing, optical switching, and other uses.

Evaluating fraud risk in a transaction between consumer and a merchant over a network is disclosed. The merchant requests service over the network using a secure, open messaging protocol. An e-commerce transaction or electronic purchase order is received from the merchant, the level of risk associated with each order is measured, and a risk score is returned to the merchant. In one embodiment, data validation, highly predictive artificial intelligence pattern matching, network data aggregation and negative file checks are used to examine numerous factors to calculate fraud risk. A risk score is generated and compared to the merchant's specified risk threshold. The result is returned to the merchant for order disposition.

Method and apparatus for generating a bi-gram score in fraud risk analysis

An optical fiber is coated with a super-hydrophobic carbon nanotube film, or other film containing a nanocomposite material, to increase reliability. The film is formed from a carbon nanotube dispersion, which is in turn formed from a mixture of water, carbon nanotube gel, and a polymer such as single stranded DNA of a repeating sequence of the base pairs GT with a length of 20 base pairs, which is sonicated and then ultracentrifuged.

An optical signal transmitted over an optical fiber controls the conductivity of the nanotube. The nanotube transmits a signal controlled by the optical signal to a wide-bandgap semiconductor power switch, which switches the power.

A technique for evaluating fraud risk in e-commerce transactions between consumer and a merchant is disclosed. The merchant requests service from the system using a secure, open messaging protocol. An e-commerce transaction or electronic purchase order is received from the merchant, the level of risk associated with each order is measured, and a risk score is returned. In one embodiment, data validation, highly predictive artificial intelligence pattern matching, network data aggregation and negative file checks are used. The system performs analysis including data integrity checks and correlation analyses based on characteristics of the transaction. Other analysis includes comparison of the current transaction against known fraudulent transactions, and a search of a transaction history database to identify abnormal patterns, name and address changes, and defrauders. In one alternative, scoring algorithms are refined through use of a closed-loop risk modeling process enabling the service to adapt to new or changing fraud patterns.

Method and apparatus for evaluating fraud risk in an electronic commerce transaction

A passive optical sensor operates independently of light amplitude by using a semiconducting carbon nanotube material. The material has an optical property dependent on wavelength, e.g., wavelength of absorption, ratio of absorptions at two wavelengths, or fluorescence at one wavelength in response to light at another wavelength. The property is changed by compressing the material or exposing the material to a charge. Light is passed through the material so that the change in the property can be detected.

Passive optical sensor using carbon nanotubes

A method for detecting and measuring regions of a secondary material deposited onto a moving substrate. The method employs an x-ray source for directing an x-ray beam at the moving substrate, and an x-ray detector to detect an amount of x-ray energy transmitted by the moving sheet of material. Areas of bare substrate will allow for different amounts of x-ray transmission than areas of the substrate containing the secondary material. These differences in transmission and/or absorption can be used to detect the location of a region of secondary material and to determine if it falls within an acceptable range. According to one particular embodiment of the present invention, the method can be used to analyze burn characteristic modifying bands of a secondary material intermittently and repeatedly deposited to a moving web of smoking article paper.

Method for detecting and measuring a secondary material intermittently deposited to a moving substrate

An automated DNA sequencing apparatus and method is disclosed in which a laser beam having a predetermined wavelength is sequentially focused on a plurality of lanes of DNA fragments migrating in a polyacrylamide gel and in which the DNA fragments have been tagged with fluorescent compounds. The resulting fluorescent light given off by each of the tagged DNA fragments is collected and diffracted by means of an acousto-optic tunable filter and the level of the diffracted light is then detected and analyzed in order to determine the DNA sequences of the analyzed DNA fragments. The automatic DNA sequencing system of the present invention operates under computer control to repeat a series of measurements of the fluorescent data at a multiple number of wavelengths such that the entire spectrum of fluorescence emissions from all four fluorescent tagged DNA bases can be measured at any number of wavelengths.

A solid state moisture gauge is disclosed in which a quartz-halogen bulb is used with an acousto-optic tunable filter to launch light of specific desired wavelengths into a parallel plate cavity device which contains or is adjacent to material having a moisture content which is to be measured. The light exiting from the parallel plate device is detected, converted to a digital signal and then stored in a computer for later comparison to the detection of light exiting from the parallel plate device of a different wavelength.

A low voltage, compact measuring apparatus for measuring the weight of a material is disclosed which uses a PIN diode in conjunction with a low noise processing circuit to detect particle radiation emitted from a source, which source has its detection intensity affected by a material to be measured. A light blocking, particle radiation permeable material protects the PIN diode from detecting light radiation.
