A method and system for providing a watermark by amplitude modulating data onto signals being repeated from and/or to a cellular telephone handset without degrading the performance of the cellular telephone system. An exemplary cellular repeater system may include a first communication device configured to receive a cellular telephone signal from a handset. The cellular telephone signal is amplified by a variable gain amplifier configured to create an adjusted signal. The amplification factor applied by the variable gain amplifier is controlled by a message encoder configured in accordance with a predetermined encoding scheme. The adjusted signal is then transmitted to a base station by a second communication device.

Cellular repeater watermarking system and method

A spread spectrum meter reading system enables the use of high power frequency hopping spread spectrum (HPSS) transmissions at both the encoder transmitter and repeater levels of the meter reading system. A plurality of end point encoder transmitter devices are each connected to a utility meter and transmit high power FHSS signals containing at least metering data for the corresponding utility meter. A plurality of intermediate transceiver units that are fewer in number than the number of end point encoder transmitter devices both receives and retransmits the high power FHSS signals. A base station includes a receiver that receives the high power FHSS signals. Preferably, the base station can receive the high power FHSS signals from both the encoder transmitter devices and the intermediate transceiver units and the intermediate transceiver units aggregates metering data from multiple encoder transmitter devices prior to block retransmission of the metering data to the base station. Preferably, the high power FHSS signals are transmitted at a maximum hopping rate of at least one minute per hop to reduce power consumption and increase battery life of the devices.

Spread spectrum meter reading system utilizing low-speed/high-power frequency hopping

One aspect of the present invention provides a meter reading system. The meter reading system includes an endpoint device and a reader. The endpoint device is configured to operably couple to a utility meter and includes a receiver, a control block, and a transmitter. The receiver is configured to periodically turn on for a first time period to measure a signal strength. The control block is configured to keep the receiver turned on for a second time period if the measured signal strength is at least equal to a threshold value so as to enable the receiver to receive a subsequent wake-up message. The transmitter is configured to transmit an endpoint signal in response to the wake-up message. The reader is configured to transmit the wake-up message and to receive the endpoint signal.

Telemetry system and method

The present invention presents a closed loop system that utilizes a non-linear reference to control a power amplifier's output power in order to obtain a linear transfer function of dB per adjustment step of a reference input. The closed loop system demonstrates that each non-linear stage/step in an automatic gain control system can create a linear closed loop system when using a non-linear reference. The closed loop system of the present invention eliminates the need for a linearization circuit for the system's power detector. The closed loop system may be used with most power amplifiers when linear control in terms of dB vs. adjustment setting of the input reference signal is desired. Output power in terms of dBms can be accurately set in linear steps where power control over a wide dynamic range is desired.

Linear power control loop

A meter reading system preferably includes an external modem module (EMM), a hub and a data collection system. The EMM communicates with one or more utility meters and, as such, is preferably selected on the basis that it incorporates a communication format that is compatible with the communication format of the utility meter such that the utility meter does not require modification to be communicatively coupled to the EMM. The EMM obtains meter data from the utility meter and converts to a radio frequency communication format. The radio frequency formatted data is then transferred to the hub. The hub then translates the radio frequency data into an analog or digital telephone communication format, which is then transferred to the data collection system for use by the utility as desired, e.g. utility billing, tracking, control, etc. The data collection system need only recognize one communication format rather than attempting to accommodate numerous message formats such as wires, coaxial cable, optical fiber, or radio frequency.

Method and system for reading intelligent utility meters

A low-cost emergency locator beacon (ELB) device that transmits an identifying serial number in addition to the beacon signal. This transmission includes an audio modulated Manchester encoded digital version of the serial number, and an analog, voice synthesized version of the serial number. In one embodiment, the device incorporates a receiver that enables the user of the device to enter into two-way, direct voice communication with a rescuer. The device also includes an automatic receive function which facilitates operation of the device by users not aware or not able to operate the device. In another embodiment, the ELB device includes an inhibit function which prevents non-emergency, ELB device to ELB device communication. In yet another embodiment, the present device incorporates a global positioning system (GPS) receiver which reads, processes and stores positioning information broadcast by GPS satellites, then broadcasts the GPS position information in conjunction with the beacon signal and identifying serial number.

Emergency locator system

A system for synchronizing a signal at a remotely located slave station with the phase and frequency of a signal generated at a master station. The signal transmitted at the master station and received by the slave station provides compensation for the phase shift caused by the transmission path delays between the master and slave station. The slave station transmits a signal to the master station at a frequency that is different from the frequency of the signal being transmitted by the master station. The signal transmitted by the slave station is received by the master station while the master station transmitter is off. The signal transmitted by the master station is received by the slave station while the slave station transmitter is off.
