A method calculates a time for which a force is to be applied to a strut to have the strut lockingly engage a notch of a notch plate. The notch plate has a plurality of notches equidistantly spaced about a surface of the notch plate at a predetermined distance from each other. The method begins by measuring a rotational speed of the notch plate. The method then identifies the predetermined distance between the notches in the notch plate. The predetermined distance is divided by the measured speed to create a positioning time. A pivot time is added to the positioning time allow the strut to travel along the notch plate and into the notch a sufficient distance to physically lock the pocket plate and the notch plate together.

Method for operating clutch elements of a transmission

A method calculates a rotational speed of a node of a linkage in a transmission allows the continued operation of the transmission even when rotational speeds are difficult to sense due to the lack of rotational speed. The method begins by sensing rotational speed at each node to define a sensed rotational speed for each node. The sensed rotational speed at each node is compared to a threshold rotational speed. The sensed rotational speed continues to be used if an absolute value of the sensed rotational speed of the node is greater than the threshold rotational speed. A calculated rotational speed is calculated when the sensed rotational speed is less than the threshold rotational speed. The sensed rotational speed value is replaced with the calculated rotational speed for the node when the sensed rotational speed is less than the threshold rotational speed.

Method for determining the rotational speed of a node of a transmission

A transmission is shifted into a reverse state. The transmission includes a clutch. The clutch includes a pocket plate, a notch plate, a first strut housed within a pocket of the pocket plate, and a second strut housed within another pocket. A command is received to shift the transmission to reverse. It is then determined whether the at least one second strut has retracted into the pocket plate. If it remains extended, the first actuator is activated. A first rotational torque is applied to the notch plate in a direction allowing the notch plate to abut the first strut. By doing so, the second strut is released from abutting engagement with the notch plate. A second rotational torque is applied to the notch plate opposite the first rotational torque to rotate the notch plate out of engagement with the first strut, resulting in the transmission entering the reverse state.

Method for shifting a transmission of a vehicle into reverse

A lock module assembly controls hill hold, park, and neutral states of a vehicle. The lock module assembly does all of this by controlling rotation of a wheel hub (or a shaft that rotates the wheel hub) of the vehicle. The lock module assembly includes a pocket plate fixedly secured to a rotating shaft. The pocket plate includes a locking element housed therein. A notch plate has first and second sets of notches with the first set complementing the pocket plate secured to the rotating shaft. A second set of notches complements a static pocket plate that houses at least clockwise actuator and at least one counterclockwise actuator. The actuators are used to control hill holds and park, whereas the locking element of the pocket plate disengages the wheel hub from the rotating shaft (neutral).

Rotational lock module assembly

A driveline disconnect assembly disconnects a wheel hub from a drive shaft supported by a grounding component, such as a suspension knuckle. The driveline disconnect assembly includes a support frame that is fixedly secured to the grounding component. The support frame extends around at least a portion of the drive shaft and extends between first and second support frame sides. The support frame defines a central axis. A linear actuator is fixedly secured to the support frame and extends around at least a portion of the drive shaft. The linear actuator includes a shift sleeve moving axially relative to the support frame. The shift sleeve extends around at least a portion of the drive shaft to selectively engage and disengage the wheel hub to connect and disconnect the wheel hub from the drive shaft, respectively.

Driveline disconnect assembly

A method selectively locks a notch plate to a pocket plate such that the notch and pocket plates rotate together. The pocket plate includes struts that work in opposite directions. The pocket plate rotational speed and the notch plate rotational speed are identified. Once the notch plate rotational speed is close to the pocket plate rotational speed, the struts in one direction are activated. Once seated, the struts in the other direction are activated. This two-step engagement of the struts provides a smoother transition between clutch engagements (gear shifts) while not requiring the precision of having all struts activated at the same time.

Method for engaging and disengaging clutch elements of a transmission

A rotational control assembly controls at least one locking element used to lock a race with respect to a housing. The rotational control assembly includes a speed sensor disposed adjacent the race. The speed sensor senses a rotational speed of the race and generating a rotational speed signal. A controller is electrically connected to the speed sensor for receiving the rotational speed signal. The controller includes a comparator to compare the rotational speed signal to a threshold speed level. A lockout switch is electrically connected to the controller. The lockout switch prevents activation of the at least one locking element when the rotational speed signal exceeds the threshold speed level. This assembly prevents attempts to synchronize or lock races when the speeds are too high. This assembly can also be used to facilitate park and hill-hold functions.

Rotational control assembly for a vehicle transmission

A transmission case houses a plurality of coupling elements and a plurality of gears therein. Each of the plurality of coupling elements may be controllable by at least one of a plurality of actuators and at least one of a plurality of struts. Actuator pads and strut pockets are formed into opposing sides of at least one side wall of the transmission case. The side wall is strong enough to receive the forces created by the strut engaging the coupling elements, while eliminating the need for an extra coupling member that otherwise extends between the transmission housing side wall and the notch plate.

Transmission assembly

A coupling assembly has a second coupling member mounted for rotation and a first coupling member having a speed sensor to sense a speed of rotation of the second coupling member. The coupling assembly further has a forward and a reverse locking element movable between (i) a coupling position in which the locking elements engage the second coupling member to thereby prevent rotation of the second coupling member in opposite first and second directions and (ii) a non-coupling position. Upon the speed of rotation of the second coupling member decreasing to be lower than a hill-hold speed threshold, the reverse locking element is moved to the coupling position while the forward locking element is maintained in the non-coupling position. Irrespective of a Park command, the locking elements are maintained in the non-coupling position while the speed of rotation of the second coupling member is greater than a park speed threshold.

Coupling and control assembly including controllable coupling assembly having speed sensor and methods of controlling the controllable coupling assembly using information from the speed sensor for park/hill-hold operations

An overrunning, non-friction coupling and control assembly, an engageable coupling assembly and locking members for use in the assemblies are provided. A centroid or center of mass of at least one of the locking members is offset from a pivot axis of the locking member so that as the locking member moves from an engaged position, a moment arm of the centroid relative to the pivot axis decreases from a maximum value to substantially zero in a disengaged position to facilitate disengagement of the locking member at high rotational speeds.

Non-friction coupling and control assembly, engageable coupling assembly and locking member for use in the assemblies

A drive system having eCVT functionality with AMT cost advantages includes a transmission having a plurality of different operating modes. The system includes a transmission output shaft, a stationary member and a gear set including first, second, and third elements. The first element connects with the transmission output shaft. An output shaft of a non-electric power plant connects with the first element through the second element for driving the first element. A drive shaft of an electric power plant connects with the first element through the third element for driving the first element. The system includes a plurality of non-friction, controllable, coupling assemblies. A first coupling assembly has a first coupling state for grounding the second element to the stationary member, a second coupling state for grounding the third element to the stationary member and an uncoupling state to allow the second and third elements to drive the first element.

Drive system including a transmission having a plurality of different operating modes

A powertrain assembly for a vehicle includes a first motor and a second motor. A power split assembly, having an output power shaft, is connected to both the first and second motors to the power output shaft. The power split assembly selectively receives power output from the first and second motors, wherein the power split assembly defines a plurality of modes of operation to provide torque to the output power shaft. The powertrain assembly also includes a bypass power shaft operatively connected between the second motor and the output power shaft, such that the second motor provides torque to the output power shaft using the bypass power shaft to reduce torque interruptions created by the power split assembly during changes in the plurality of modes of operation.

Powertrain assembly and method of using same

A drive system or powertrain including an automatic transmission (AT) for an electric vehicle is provided. At least one 3-position linear motor, 2-way clutch (i.e. CMD) is included in the transmission. The transmission includes a planetary gear set. A magnetic coupling device such as an eddy current by-pass clutch is provided to magnetically transfer a portion of rotating mechanical energy of a single electric powerplant or motor to a transmission output shaft in response to an electrical signal to synchronize angular velocities of the transmission output shaft and an output shaft of the electric powerplant during a change in state of the at least one CMD. Torque is transferred to the transmission output shaft during the change in state. A park function is also provided.

Drive system including a transmission and magnetic coupling device for an electric vehicle

Drive systems or powertrains including transmissions for electric and hybrid electric vehicles are provided. 3-position linear motor, 2-way clutches (i.e. CMDs) are included in the transmissions. An electric 3-speed AMT having a magnetic coupling device such as a magnetic torque converter is provided to magnetically transfer a portion of rotating mechanical energy of an electric powerplant or motor to a transmission output shaft in response to an electrical signal to synchronize angular velocities of the transmission output shaft and an output shaft of the electric powerplant during a change in state of one of the CMDs. Torque is transferred to the transmission output shaft during the change in state.

Drive systems including transmissions and magnetic coupling devices for electric and hybrid electric vehicles

A modular transmission assembly facilitates its use in all classes of trucks. The transmission is designed to receive one, two or three inputs. In addition, it can add torque multiplying gearsets when needed. The transmission assembly utilizes two gearsets configured in ring-carrier/ring-carrier configuration to operate as a four-node transmission. Two input shafts are coaxial with one inside the other (input shaftinside input shaft) allowing torque from the second input to be received directly at the output shaft of the transmission. The transmission includes two controllable clutches coupling the second input with the two gearsets. Two controllable brakes selectively couple various gears of the gearsets to ground. Controlling the clutches and brakes controls the torque of the output shaft as a function of torques received by the first and second input shafts.
