A finished, painted golf ball is disclosed. Dimples on the golf ball are interrelated by dimple number, dimple diameter and dimple depth and are arranged on the surface of the golf ball in a manner which enables the golf ball to travel further. At least about 80% of the distances between the closest points of the edges of adjacent dimples are less than about 0.065 inches and at least about 55% of the distances between the closest points of the edges of adjacent dimples are greater than about 0.001 inches. A golf ball with improved distance is disclosed. The golf ball has a relatively low spin velocity coupled with a particular dimple number, diameter, depth and arrangement. The ball is characterized by a lower flight trajectory and longer total distance. In a preferred embodiment (Example 10, shown in FIG. 2), the dimples marked 18 have a diameter of 0.140 inches.+-.0.002 inches, while the balance of the dimples have a diameter of 0.160 inches.+-.0.002 inches.

The golf ball has 384 dimples .+-.3% and the dimples preferably have an average diameter of 0.145-0.155 inches and an average depth of 0.0103-0.0123 inches. The golf ball core can be either thread wound or solid. The cover can be transpolyisoprene or an ionomer. The materials of the core and cover are selected so that the golf ball has a spin velocity below 2900 rpm when hit at 230 feet per second by an implement having a face angle of 13.degree. with respect to the vertical. The dimples are substantially evenly spaced over the surface of the golf ball, and the dimple depth, diameter and number are interrelated according to the following formula:

Wood type golf club head or similar article

A 'wood-type' golf club comprising a plurality of separately constructed and finished components is disclosed. In its preferred form, the golf club comprises a face plate, a club head block and a reinforcing collar. The face plate, the club head block and the collar are separately constructed and finished and subsequently assembled into a finished golf club. According to the invention, the construction and finishing of the individual components and subsequent assembly thereof is such that at selected interfaces between the components of different material, relative movement of the components due to thermal expansion, moisture, etc. does not produce visible component interface separation lines. This may be accomplished by providing unequal peripheral dimensions of the components of different materials at the selected interfaces.

A trajectory calculator receiving data indicating initial values of golf ball flight angle, velocity and spin, calculates the apparent elevation and deflection angles at which the golf ball would be seen by an observer at the launch point. An optical object projector projects an image representing the golf ball on a screen. The size of the image decreases with time to yield the apparent perspective size decrease with range. An optional exerciser console enables input of changeable environmental quantities.

An improved wood type golf club is disclosed. A reinforcing member is provided in the club whereby the strength of attachment of the shaft to the club is greater than with conventional wood type clubs. Additionally, because of the shape of the reinforcing member, a portion of the weight of the club head can be moved out to the peripheral regions thereof thereby providing a greater moment of inertia and a correspondingly better club. Furthermore, by means of providing edge radii of at least 0.15 inches and 0.25 inches on the bottom and top leading edges respectively of the face of the club and with a 'trip step' there is a marked reduction in wind resistance thus lowering the power needed to swing the club or increasing club head velocity for equal energy input.

Golf club wood

A golf club head having a high radius of gyration while maintaining desirable conventional design features is disclosed. The golf club head comprises a steel head and preferably tungsten embedded inserts being added in the heel and toe areas thereof. The entire back of the club head is located on one side of an area defined by a plane which is parallel to the axis of the golf club shaft and tangential to the top of the back of the club head.
