Metal oxide catalyst

This invention relates to a method for the oxidative conversion of methane to ethylene and/or ethane and to a catalyst system for use in the method. In more detail a method for the oxidative conversion of methane to ethylene and/or ethane in which a mixture comprising methane and oxygen is heated to a temperature of from 500.degree. to 1000.degree. C. and the heated mixture is contacted with a catalyst system which comprises a first component which is a non-reducible metal compound and which first component is sufficiently refractory to withstand the operative temperature and a second component which is one or more oxycompounds of boron or phosphorus provided on the surface of the first component.

Oxidative conversion of methane to ethylene and ethane

A catalytic process for the generation of hydrogen by the partial oxidation of hydrocarbons, especially alkanes such as methane or hexane. The preferred catalyst system comprises from 0.01 to 5 wt % platinum and from 1 to 15 wt % chromium oxide supported on a refractory solid such as silica. Also a reactor for effecting the process in which the reactants are injected into or among the catalyst system and a technique for starting the process at ambient temperature by introducing an initiating compound such as methanol into the catalyst system.

Catalytic generation of hydrogen from hydrocarbons

A catalytic hydrogen generator which generates hydrogen by the partial oxidation of methanol by oxygen (usually supplied as air) which comprises a gas permeable catalyst system having an upstream zone (2) filled with a copper catalyst supported on a refractory support (3) (for example silica or silicate granules) and a downstream zone (4) filled with a mixture of a similar supported copper catalyst and a platinum or palladium catalyst supported on a similar refractory support (5b). A mixture of methanol and oxygen is fed to the upstream zone and initially permeates through to the downstream zone where spontaneous oxidation of the methanol is initiated raising the temperature of the system to a level at which partial oxidation of methanol in the presence of the copper catalyst in the upstream zone (2) commences and produces hydrogen.

Catalytic hydrogen generator for use with methanol

A colored inorganic complex of titanium, stannous and zinc oxides for use in making pigments capable of imparting for example red, yellow or green colors to plastics, paints, glasses or ceramics without reliance on toxic moieties. A wider range of colors can be obtained if the complex is used in a pigment system comprising excess oxides of titanium and zinc or stannic tin. The complex is preferably made by adding an acidified aqueous solution of ions of the metals (e.g. as metal sulphates or metal halides) to alkali so as to precipitate the oxides or oxide precursor such as hydrated oxides which are then washed and fired at over 450.degree. C. to form the complex. The colors obtained may be adjusted by the presence of traces of residual alkali metal moiety.
