Disclosed is a double bogey arrangement comprised of four wheels mounted in an opposed fashion for supporting the T-shaped upper end of a road lane barrier. The double bogey structure includes an elastomeric mounting to absorb operating shocks while transferring lane barriers from one lane to another. The four-wheel bogey precludes problems existing with present lane barrier positioning vehicles wherein the support wheels are caught in the separation between the series of lane barriers, thereby causing damage to the support wheels and to the lane barriers.

This invention relates to a barrier module adapted to be connected in series with additional modules to form a continuous barrier system for collectively absorbing high-impact loads thereon by a road vehicle or the like. Each module comprises a container having a chamber adapted to be filled with a shock-absorbing medium, such as water. A continuous barrier system is formed by connecting a plurality of the modules together, in tandem, by one or more cables which function to transmit impact loads substantially uniformly to the modules concurrently. In carrying forth the method of this invention, the modules for the barrier system are placed in situ on a roadway or the like prior to their being filled with water.

A plurality of uni-directional light reflective lane markers are adapted for securance on a roadway to separate and delineate laterally adjacent traffic lanes from each other. Each lane marker comprises an elongated delineating strip extending longitudinally in a first direction and a plurality of longitudinally spaced light reflectors on the delineating strip for visually displaying the strip when it is viewed in the first direction and for at least substantially rendering the strip invisible when it is viewed in the second direction, opposite to the first direction. Thus, a particular traffic lane is clearly delineated for traffic travelling in the first direction, but is rendered substantially invisible when viewed by traffic travelling in the second, opposite directions. Conversely, the lanes for traffic travelling in the second direction are clearly delineated for oppositely moving traffic. Each lane marker preferably comprises a molded plastic member embedded in flush relationship in the roadway and the light reflectors are defined on exposed leading surfaces, formed on the proximal sides of a plurality of longitudinally spaced segments formed within the member.

A lane barrier system comprises a plurality of pivotally interconnected modules adapted to be transferred on a roadway. Each adjacent pair of modules are pivotally connected together by a hinge connection to permit the modules to elongate or contract to assume a composite varied length different from a nominal length. The controlled elongation or contraction of the lane barrier system is particularly advantageous when the barrier is positioned at various radii on a curved roadway. Each hinge connection is preloaded, such as by a torsion spring, to positively return the pivot axes of the hinge connections to their nominal positions and the lane barrier system to its nominal length when they are loaded onto a transfer machine for subsequent placement on a roadway.

A lane barrier system comprises a plurality of pivotally interconnected modules adapted to be transferred on a roadway. Each adjacent pair of modules are pivotally connected together by hinge connections to permit the modules to pivot relative to each other about a vertical pivot axis. A pivot control connected to at least one of the hinge connections permits the pivot axis to move between the modules whereby the modules are capable of elongating or contracting to assume a composite varied length. The pivot control further functions to fix the position of the pivot axis between the modules to rigidify the lane barrier system longitudinally and to place it in tension when lateral loads are imposed thereon, such as when impacted by a road vehicle. The ability of the lane barrier system to elongate or contract is advantageous when the system is picked-up by a transfer vehicle for relocation on a roadway and when the system is positioned at various radii on a curved roadway. In the disclosed embodiment of this invention, the pivot control is responsive to lifting of the modules from a roadway to place them in condition permitting them to elongate or contract.

A lane barrier system comprises a plurality of pivotally interconnected modules adapted to be transferred on a roadway. Each module has sidewalls that taper upwardly and inwardly to intersect a T-shaped upper portion having undercut surfaces extending laterally outwardly from a central vertical axis of the module and past critical impact points on the module. The sidewalls and undercut surfaces are configured to aid in the precise deflection, guidance and 'capturing' of the bumper of a passenger vehicle or light duty truck when the bumper impacts the module to prevent the vehicle from catapulting over the system. A reinforcement assembly is encased within a concrete casting of each module. Each adjacent pair of modules are pivotally connected together to permit them to elongate or contract to assume a composite varied length different than a normal, nominal length when a load is imposed thereon and to automatically return to their nominal length when the load is removed. This controlled elongation or contraction of the lane barrier is particularly advantageous when the barrier is positioned at various radii on a curved roadway.

A delineator comprises an upstanding flexible marker having a first access opening formed through a bottom wall thereof to receive a fastener, such as a bolt, therethrough. A second access opening is formed through a side wall of the marker to accommodate a wrench for the purpose of selectively tightening or releasing the bolt. In one embodiment of the invention, a mounting plate, having the bolt secured thereon, is secured to a paved roadway or the like with the bolt extending upwardly through the first access opening and having a nut threaded thereon for the purpose of securing the marker in place. In a second described embodiment, a mounting post is driven into the ground and has screw threads defined therein with the bolt extending downwardly through the first access opening and threadedly engaged with the screw threads.
