A coating system includes as separate components: (a) a first tintable base composition including: a first resin, a first liquid carrier, and a first pigment package; and (b) a second tintable base composition including: a second resin, a second liquid carrier, and optionally a second pigment package. The pigment volume concentration and/or the sheen and/or the gloss of the first tintable base composition and the second tintable base composition are substantially different. The components (a) and (b) are not mixed together.

Coating system

A curable film-forming composition is provided, comprising: (a) a polymeric binder comprising reactive functional groups; (b) a curing agent comprising functional groups that are reactive with the reactive functional groups of (a); and (c) a polysiloxane resin comprising aromatic functional groups and terminal active hydrogen groups. In certain examples of the present invention, the polymeric binder (a) comprises an acrylic polyol prepared from a monomer mixture comprising a hydroxyl functional monomer, and the curable film-forming composition further comprises a rheology modifier comprising: (1) a non-aqueous dispersion of an internally crosslinked organic polymer; (2) a silica dispersion; and/or (3) a reaction product of an amine and an isocyanate. Also provided are coated substrates that include the curable film-forming compositions described above and methods for forming a composite coating on a substrate.

Lithium ion battery electrodes including graphenic carbon particles are disclosed. Lithium ion batteries containing such electrodes are also disclosed. The graphenic carbon particles may be used in cathodes of such batteries by depositing a graphenic carbon particle-containing coating of a conductive substrate such as a metal foil The use of graphenic carbon particles in the cathodes results in improved performance of the lithium ion batteries.

A coating composition is provided comprising (a) a polymer containing reactive functional groups; (b) a curing agent having reactive functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups in the polymer in (a); and (c) a polymeric material different from (a) and (b) having functional groups. The functional groups in components (a) and (b) are more reactive with each other than with the functional groups in component (c) such that upon curing, at least a portion of the functional groups on component (c) remain unreacted. A coating layer formed from the composition upon application to a substrate has surface regions and a bulk region, and the concentration of component (c) at one or more surface regions is greater than the concentration of component (c) in the bulk region of the coating layer. The composition can be used in multi-layer composites containing two or more coating layers.

Surface active additives for coatings

The present invention provides an improved multi-layer composite of two or more polymeric layers at least one of which is formed from a thermosetting composition. The composite includes at least a first polymeric layer formed on a substrate and a second polymeric layer over the first polymeric layer, wherein in the absence of a boron-containing compound, the first and second polymeric layers have poor interlayer adhesion. The improvement resides in the inclusion of at least one boron-containing compound in one or both of the first and second polymeric layers in an amount sufficient to improve the interlayer adhesion between the first and second polymeric layers. Also provided is an improved curable coating composition used to form a multi-layer composite coating of two or more cured coating layers, at least one of which is formed from the thermosetting composition. Related methods and coated substrates are also provided.

Multi-layer composites formed from compositions having improved adhesion, coating compositions, and methods related thereto

Coating compositions formed from at least one hydroxyl functional non-vinyl material comprising at least one alcoholic hydroxyl group blocked with a hydrolyzable silyl group, and at least one curing agent are provided by the present invention. Another embodiment of the present invention is directed to a coating composition formed from components comprising at least one carbamate functional material comprising at least one carbamate group blocked with a hydrolyzable silyl group, and at least one curing agent. Another embodiment of the present invention is directed to a coating composition formed from components comprising at least one carboxyl functional material comprising at least one carboxyl group blocked with a hydrolyzable silyl group, and at least one curing agent. Another embodiment of the present invention is directed to a coating composition formed from components comprising at least one amide functional material comprising at least one amide blocked with a hydrolyzable silyl group, and at least one curing agent. Other embodiments of the present invention are directed to substrates coated with the aforementioned cured compositions. Also provided are multi-component composite coatings which include a cured basecoat deposited from a pigmented coating composition and a cured topcoat deposited from a topcoating composition. The multi-component composite coatings of the invention provide highly scratch resistant color-plus-clearcoatings. Further embodiments of the present invention are directed to methods for improving scratch resistance of a substrate.

Coating compositions comprising silyl blocked components, coatings, coated substrates and methods related thereto

Coating compositions formed from at least one hydroxyl functional non-vinyl material comprising at least one alcoholic hydroxyl group blocked with a hydrolyzable silyl group, and at least one curing agent are provided by the present invention. Another embodiment of the present invention is directed to a coating composition formed from components comprising at least one carbamate functional material comprising at least one carbamate group blocked with a hydrolyzable silyl group, and at least one curing agent. Another embodiment of the present invention is directed to a coating composition formed from components comprising at least one carboxyl functional material comprising at least one carboxyl group blocked with a hydrolyzable silyl group, and at least one curing agent. Another embodiment of the present invention is directed to a coating composition, formed from components comprising at least one amide functional material comprising at least one amide blocked with a hydrolyzable silyl group, and at least one curing agent. Other embodiments of the present invention are directed to substrates coated with the aforementioned cured compositions. Also provided are multi-component composite coatings which include a cured basecoat deposited from a pigmented coating composition and a cured topcoat deposited from a topcoating composition. The multi-component composite coatings of the invention provide highly scratch resistant color-plus-clearcoatings. Further embodiments of the present invention are directed to methods for improving scratch resistance of a substrate.

Coating compositions comprising silyl blocked components, coating, coated substrates and methods related thereto

Improved multi-layer composites are provided. The multi-layer composites include at least a first polymeric layer and a second polymeric layer formed over the first polymeric layer thereby forming an interface region there between. At least one of the polymeric layers is formed from a thermosetting composition which contains an adhesion promoter composition. The adhesion promoter composition is formed from (1) at least one adhesion promoting component, and (2) at least one surface active component. The improvement is represented by the presence of the adhesion promoting component (1) at the interface region.

A film-forming composition, typically a topcoat, having improved adhesion to certain commercially available adhesives. The composition includes a curable film-forming polymer, typically an acrylic and/or a polyester polymer, with carbamate and/or urea groups. The composition further includes a material containing one or more hydrolyzable silyl groups. The hydrolyzable silyl group-containing material optionally can be a polymeric or oligomeric. Also disclosed are a method of applying the above-described film-forming composition to a substrate and the coated article prepared by such a method.

Topcoat with improved adhesive qualities

Described are photochromic epoxy resin coatings that meet commercially acceptable &ldquo;cosmetic&rdquo; standards for optical coatings. Also described are articles having such coatings. The coatings exhibit a Fischer microhardness of from 50 to 150 Newtons per mm,and desirable photochromic properties, i.e., the formation of darker activated colors and faster rates of photochromic activation and fade when irradiated with ultraviolet light.

Disclosed are compositions comprised of (a)a polymer containing pendant and/or functional groups selected from the group consisting of carbamate, urethane and/or amide functional groups; and (b) a rheology modifier comprising the reaction product of an amine and an isocyanate; and, optionally, a polymer which is different from the polymer (a) which contains carbamate, urethane and/or amide functional groups. Also disclosed are curable compositions comprised of the compositions described above which further comprise (c) a curing agent having functional groups reactive with the functional groups of the polymer (a). The curable compositions are useful for a variety of applications such as adhesives, sealants and surface coatings where the presence of a carbamate, urethane and/or amide functional polymer in conjunction with the rheology modifier provides improved thixotropy and superior sag resistance.

Curable film-forming compositions containing epoxy functional copolymers, polycarboxylic acid crosslinking agents, and triaryltin compound having the chemical structure of (Ar).sub.3 SnOR wherein the aryl groups are the same or different and at least one aryl group is substituted with at least one atom or group selected from the group consisting of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorous, silicon and halogen and R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, and acyl groups are disclosed. The compositions do not release benzene during cure. The compositions may be powder or liquid and are useful as clear coats, particularly in a color-plus-clear composite coating system.
