A data card is provided which has an electrically conductive rail (70, 72 FIG. 2 ) extending along its opposite sides and part of its rear, and connected to the ground plane (60) of a circuit board (46) of the card, to provide EMI (electromagnetic interference) shielding along the perimeter of the card. The rail has top and bottom edge portions (94, 96 FIG. 6) that are each bent into a U shape to extend around top and bottom ridges at the side of the card body to lock the rail in place. One edge portion includes a projecting tab (110) which is bent to extend inwardly and engage the ground plane (60) of the circuit board. The molded card body has a through hole (114) in its side portion, and the tab can extend into that hole before extending inwardly to the circuit board ground plane.

Coaxial connector

A connector system is provided wherein a first connector (12, FIG. 1) has outer and inner contacts (50, 52) that are normally 'shorted' to one another until the first connector is mated to a second one (14), which facilitates the conversion of one or more coax regions of each connector for switching. A conductive switch element (60) can be mounted on the pin-shaped inner contact, the switch element including a sleeve (62) that tightly fits around the pin and also including a pair of switch arms (64, 66) extending rearwardly and radially outwardly from the front of the sleeve. A corresponding coax region of the second connector is devoid of outer and inner contacts, but instead includes an actuator (80) with an insulative tubular part (82) that is mounted in the second housing in place of an outer contact thereat.

Switching connector

A coaxial connector is described, of the type that has a shell (14, FIG. 1 ) with a tubular first portion (16) whose front mates with another connector and whose extreme rear end (64) is initially open, and which has a second portion (22) extending at a right angle to the first portion for mechanically and electrically terminating to the braiding (42A) of a coaxial cable (30). The second portion (22) of the shell forms a tubular ferrule that surrounds the cable inner insulation (40) and which is surrounded by the cable braiding. The connector includes a sleeve (46) which can slide along the cable to a position surrounding the braiding that surrounds the ferrule, so crimping of the sleeve locks the braiding between the ferrule and sleeve. The shell second portion includes first and second parts (50, 52) that extend respectively from the lower and upper sides (60, 62) of the rearward end (56) of the first shell portion, with the second part being bendable and each part forming about half of the tubular ferrule. The second part (52) extends rearwardly from the upper side of the shell first portion while lying above the mate axis (12) of the first shell portion to provide access for a soldering iron to reach into the initially open rear end of the first shell portion.

Card-receiving electronic device having grounding spring

A data card is provided which has an electrically conductive rail (70, 72 FIG. 2 ) extending along its opposite sides and part of its rear, and connected to the ground plane (60) of a circuit board (46) of the card, to provide EMI (electromagnetic interference) shielding along the perimeter of the card. The rail has top and bottom edge portions (94, 96 FIG. 6 ) that are each bent into a U shape to extend around top and bottom ridges at the side of the card body to lock the rail in place. One edge portion includes a projecting tab (110) which is bent to extend inwardly and engage the ground plane (60) of the circuit board. The molded card body has a through hole (114) in its side portion, and the tab can extend into that hole before extending inwardly to the circuit board ground plane.

Data card perimeter shield

An IC card (10, FIG. 1 ) and a cable harness (14) which can connect to the input/output port at the rear of the card, are provided, which have effective grounding contacts. The cable harness (14) has a cable connector (60) with a pair of laterally-spaced plug parts (90, 92) holding contacts and pluggable into corresponding recesses at the rear of the card, and has a grounding cable contact (74) of pin shape lying between the plug parts. The grounding pin is exposed, but is protected by the plug parts. The card has a frame (16) with an integrally molded rear connector (42), and a circuit board (20) is mounted on the frame. The circuit board has a lower surface (154, FIG. 6 ) with a ground plane (156) at the rearward portion thereof, and has an upper surface (140, FIG. 5 ) with two rows of signal traces (142, 144) and with a ground trace (152) between them, the ground trace being connected through the board to the ground plane on the lower surface of the board. The rear of the frame forms a passage (I80, FIG. 7 ) for holding a grounding socket contact (80), the passage being formed by vertical holes (191-195) extending alternately from the top and from the bottom surface of the frame and across the passage.

IC card and cable harness

A connector is provided of the type that has rows of contacts, which minimizes cross talk between adjacent contacts. An interceptor plate (60, FIG. 2) which is grounded or at another controlled potential, extends along each row of contacts (34), the plate lying close to the row to provide better capacitive coupling between each contact and the plate than between contacts of the same or different rows.

Connector with interceptor plate

A connector for an IC memory card having a printed circuit member mounted within the housing of the card which extends into a slot opening at the edge of the card. The connector contains two rows of contacts which are engageable with conductive traces on the opposite sides of the printed circuit member when the card is inserted into the connector. The contacts in the connector are reversely bent to form inner arms joined to outer arms by nose portions. The inner arms of the contacts in the two rows are normally spaced apart a distance greater than the thickness of the printed circuit member so that when the card is initially inserted into the connector, the noses of the contacts will pass freely over the border of the printed circuit member. Thereafter, the sidewalls of the housing of the card cam the outer arms of the contacts inwardly, forcing the inner arms into engagement with the traces on the printed circuit member in the card.

Connector for IC card

An insulation displacement connector is disclosed which is particularly adapted for use with flat cable having very closely spaced conductors. The connector contains two rows of contacts. The contacts in the two rows are staggered relative to each other. Each contact has a slotted plate for engaging one of the conductors of the cable. Adjacent contacts in each row of contacts are rotated 180.degree. relative to each other so that the slotted plates of the contacts in each row are also staggered relative to each other for facilitating feeding every second conductor of the flat cable laterally between the slotted plates of one row of contacts to the slotted plates of the other row.

Insulation displacement connector

A connector assembly is described for fitting in a small space between a display panel device and a printed circuit board device, to electrically connect a multiplicity of closely-spaced conductors on the devices. The connector assembly includes a row of contact elements with opposite ends for contacting the conductors of the devices, and with curved middle portions that are nested in one another. The middle portions of the elements are sandwiched between the substantially flat faces of a housing, and the opposite ends of the elements project through openings in the housing.

Connector assembly for making multiple connections in a thin space

An improvement is described in a low insertion force connector system wherein an insertable circuit assembly is inserted into a housing against an inplace circuit assembly, with the terminals adjacent but out of contact, at which time a cam is actuated to move a device that deflects one set of terminals against the other. In the present system, the cam includes a portion that deflects against an auxillary terminal to make contact with it before the main terminals are in contact.

Low insertion force connector system

An improvement is described in a type of connection system wherein an insertable circuit assembly can be pushed into a housing which contains an inplace circuit assembly, until terminals on the two assemblies lie opposite one another but out of contact, at which time a deflecting member on one of the assemblies is moved sidewardly to deflect its terminals into contact with the other terminals. In the present system the inplace assembly is movable along with the insertable assembly after they engage one another. As the assemblies move, a cam on the housing moves the deflecting member sidewardly to deflect the terminals.

Linear actuated connector

An insulation displacement connector is disclosed which is particularly adapted for use with flat cable having closely spaced conductors. The termination end of each contact in the connector is formed by slitting the contact body and then offsetting the arms formed by the slit in opposite directions. Each conductor of the flat cable is pushed between the offset arms of a corresponding contact. A cap is mounted over the rear of the connector. Cavities in the cap having inclined walls engage the free ends of the resilient arms of the contacts urging them inwardly toward each other to ensure that a high strength connection will be maintained between the contacts and the conductors.

A zero insertion force socket for connecting the leads of an integrated circuit carrier to conductors on a printed circuit board. The socket contains a movable actuator which shifts the contacts in the socket into engagement with the leads on the carrier after the leads have been initially inserted into the socket in positions spaced from the contacts. The actuator comprises a partitioning structure made of interleaved thin metal strips which allow a very dense arrangement of the contacts in the socket and also perform an electrical shielding function.
