A point of incision is created within tissue, the tissue having a temporoparietal fascia-deep temporoparietal fascia layer (TPF-sDTF) beneath skin and a temporal branch of a target nerve extending along a portion of the TPF-sDTF, the point of incision being laterally displaced from the target nerve. A cryogenic probe having a distal tip extending from an elongated body is inserted into the point of incision. The TPF-sDTF is bluntly dissected using the cryogenic probe such that a treating portion of the cryogenic probe is directly adjacent to a first treatment portion of the target nerve. The cryogenic probe is activated to create a first treatment zone at the first treatment portion of the target nerve to cause a therapeutic effect.

Embodiments include a cryogenic device for alleviating pain by cryogenically treating a nerve, the cryogenic device including a handpiece; a needle coupled to a distal end of the handpiece, the needle including a needle lumen, the needle being configured for insertion into a skin of a patient along an insertion axis at a site laterally displaced from a treatment zone proximate to the nerve. The needle is configured to resiliently bend after insertion away from the insertion axis, such that at least a portion of the needle is adapted to traverse a skin layer laterally toward the treatment zone. A method in which a nerve associated with a spasticity in a limb of a patient may be identified. The cryogenic cooling needle may be inserted through a skin surface. The cryogenic cooling needle may be positioned to a target tissue such that the distal end of the cryogenic cooling needle is proximate to the nerve by bending the needle, wherein the needle has varying stiffness at a proximal portion and a distal portion. A treatment cycle may be delivered to a target tissue proximate to the nerve, the treatment cycle may comprise a cooling phase wherein cooling fluid flows into the lumen so that liquid from the cooling fluid flow vaporizes within the lumen to provide cooling to the nerve so as to treat spasticity.

The applicator includes a flexible portion and a rigid portion. The rigid portion includes a thermally conductive plate and a frame coupling the thermally conductive plate and the flexible portion. An interior cavity of the applicator is in fluid communication with the suction source, and the frame maintains contiguous engagement between the heat removal source and the thermally conductive plate.

In some embodiments, a method includes identifying a nerve extending across a transection path; administering a cooling therapy to the identified nerve at a location proximal to the transection path so as to degenerate the identified nerve across the transection path prior to or during surgical transection along the transection path, wherein cooling the identified nerve prevents or reduces neuroma formation at a transected end of the nerve after transection of the nerve. In some embodiments, a method includes degenerating a portion of a nerve while preserving a connective tissue framework of the nerve. During or after the degeneration, the preserved connective tissue framework may be transected at a transection location distal to the treatment location. The regeneration of the nerve may be repeatedly disrupted for a period of time to reduce a regenerative rate of the nerve and delay neuroma formation.

Methods and systems for preventing neuroma formations

A method in which a location is determined on the skin that is proximate to a sensory nerve that is associated with a painful condition. At least one needle of a cryogenic device is inserted into the location on the skin such that the needle is proximate to the sensory nerve. The device is activated such that the at least one needle creates a cooling zone about the sensory nerve, thereby eliminating or reducing severity of the painful condition.

Methods, systems, and devices for treating neuromas, fibromas, nerve entrapment, and/or pain associated therewith

A system for alleviating occipital neuralgia. The system has a needle probe having at least one needle. The at least one needle has a proximal end, a distal end, and a needle lumen therebetween, the needle configured for insertion proximate to a location of the occipital nerve. A cooling fluid supply lumen extends distally within the needle lumen to a distal portion of the needle lumen. A cooling fluid source is coupled to the cooling fluid supply lumen to direct cooling fluid flow into the needle lumen. A controller that has at least one processor configured implements an occipital neuralgia treatment algorithm for controlling the cooling fluid source so that liquid from the cooling flow vaporizes within the needle lumen to provide a treatment phase to location of the occipital nerve such that the occipital neuralgia is mitigated.

The present invention generally relates to improved medical devices, systems, and methods. In many embodiments, devices, systems, and methods for amputating a limb of a patient are provided. In many embodiments, devices, systems, and methods may provide chronic denervation of one or more nerves of a patient as part of a therapeutic treatment. The methods may employ cold for the prevention of neuromas or fibromas associated with amputation of a limb of a patient. Embodiments of the invention include needles that can be advanced through skin or other tissues to cause axonotmesis of a target nerve of the patient and to repeatedly interrupt a regeneration of the nerve so as to provide therapeutic chronic denervation of the target nerve. The therapeutic chronic denervation may delay the formation of neuromas or fibromas in a patient's residual limb and/or may provide long lasting and permanent pain relief associated with the target nerve.
