A clutch assembly includes a shaft, a balance dam sealed to the shaft, a seal plate axially spaced from the balance dam and sealed to the shaft, and a piston. The piston is sealed to the shaft and disposed axially between the balance dam and the seal plate. The piston includes an orifice extending axially therethrough. A pressure chamber is bounded in part by the piston and the seal plate. A balance chamber is bounded in part by the piston and the balance dam. The pressure chamber is in fluid communication with the balance chamber via the orifice.

A torque converter, including: a cover arranged to receive torque and supported for rotation around an axis of rotation; an impeller; a turbine in fluid communication with the impeller; a stator including a stator blade axially disposed between the turbine and the impeller; a vibration damper including a cover plate, an output flange arranged to non-rotatably connect to an input shaft of a transmission, and a spring engaged with the cover plate and the output flange; a hub non-rotatably connected to the cover; a lock-up clutch including a piston plate; and a first washer directly connected to the output flange, axially disposed between the hub and the output flange, and separated, in an axial direction parallel to the axis of rotation, from the hub by a first gap. A straight line, parallel to the axis of rotation, passes through, in sequence, the output flange, the first washer, and the hub.

A layer is provided for a thrust bushing, for example a torque converter thrust bushing. A phenolic resin is bonded directly to a bearing surface of a rotating component to form the layer without any substrate.

A thrust bearing cage including an improved lubrication feature is disclosed. The thrust bearing cage includes a first rim and a second rim with a plurality of crossbars extending therebetween to define rolling element pockets. Each crossbar of the plurality of crossbars includes: a first radial flange extending from the first rim; a second radial flange extending from the second rim; and a medial radial flange connecting the first radial flange and the second radial flange. The medial radial flange is axially offset from the first radial flange and the second radial flange. At least one of the first radial flange, the medial radial flange, or the second radial flange includes a protrusion defining at least one ramped surface. The ramped surface creates a hydrodynamic effect, which guides the thrust bearing cage away from an adjacent surface, and ensures that a lubricated state is maintained.

A cover assembly for a torque converter includes a front cover and a drive plate connected to an outer surface of the front cover for coupling to the front cover to an engine crankshaft. The drive plate includes elastic preloading elements pressing against the outer surface of the front cover. A method of forming a cover assembly for a torque converter includes fixing a drive plate to an outer surface of a front cover of the torque converter such that elastic preloading elements of the drive plate press against the outer surface and are compressed.
