The techniques described within this disclosure are directed to an in-line adaptor or coupling device of a PON that detects incoming optical signals (e.g., of different services) being delivered over the PON on different bands of wavelengths supported by an incoming optical fiber of the PON, converts (if necessary) any optical signals to suitable wavelength signals, and transmits the converted optical signals to a last mile termination unit via suitable output interfaces. At least a portion of the incoming optical signals are not converted by the in-line adaptor, and instead are passed-through the in-line adaptor to the last mile termination unit via an optical output interface. The in-line adaptor further includes one or more wireless interfaces via which information pertaining to the received optical signals and/or other information related to the in-line adaptor is transmitted to one or more recipient devices.

Techniques for augmenting repair of a network failure in a Passive Optical Network (PON) include receiving sensor data at a client device indicating a current environment that includes an optical network terminal (ONT) in a PON. The PON includes an optical line terminal (OLT) optically connected to the ONT via one or more optical fibers. The client device analyzes the current environment to detect a cause of a network failure corresponding to the ONT, and generates a set of instructions for repairing the ONT based on the detected cause of the network failure. Then the client device provides the set of instructions for a user to follow to repair the ONT. The set of instructions are provided as the user repairs the ONT.

Techniques for powering a multi-unit optical network terminal (MU-ONT) located outside of a multi-unit building include obtaining reverse power from Power-over-Ethernet (POE) lines connecting the MU-ONT to terminal units (TUs) or customer premises equipments (CPEs) disposed inside the building. Reverse power may be injected into the PoE lines at the TUs, for example. Via an MU-ONT reverse powering device, the reverse power may be separated from services data provided via the PoE lines, and the services data may be delivered between the TUs and a Passive Optical Network (PON) via the MU-ONT. The reverse power obtained from the PoE lines may be aggregated to provide the MU-ONT with power commensurate with its power load. In some embodiments, the MU-ONT power load may be shared or distributed across PoE lines in a passive or actively controlled manner based on variations in the MU-ONT load and/or respective characteristics of the PoE lines.

An enclosure for retaining at least one networking component may include a shell forming a first chamber and a second chamber, a dielectric fluid adapted to be disposed in the first chamber, a mounting mechanism at least partially disposed within the first chamber, a coolant distribution line at least partially disposed within the first chamber, and a coolant circulator at least partially disposed within the shell. The mounting mechanism includes at least one coupling member adapted to retain at least one active networking component. The coolant distribution line includes an elongated member having at least one opening formed on a portion thereof. The coolant circulator is adapted to circulate the dielectric fluid within the first chamber of the shell via the coolant distribution line. The mounting mechanism is adapted to be submerged in the dielectric fluid.

A PON system includes both a PON via which optical services are delivered and a wireless network overlaying the PON. The wireless network may be a self-organizing wireless mesh network, and may generally operate as a logical signaling pathway via which information regarding optical states/statuses of PON components and/or related information is delivered from the field to back-end servers of the PON system. Accordingly, the system may include multiple in-common nodes (e.g., OLTs, LMTUs, etc.) which are included in both the PON and the wireless network. Based on optical information received via the wireless network, the servers can localize the physical location of a PON fault to a particular geographical region of multiple regions serviced by the PON (in some cases narrowing the fault's physical location to a particular span, FDH, or optical terminal), and may dispatch a technician directly to the localized physical location to address the fault.
