A pump as provided includes an inlet, an outlet, and a scroll pumping element. The scroll pumping element includes a fixed scroll component having one or more fixed scrolls and orbiting scroll component having one or more orbiting scrolls for fluid pumping. The fixed scroll component and the orbiting scroll component are arranged so as to be capable of providing pressurized fluid to a thrust bearing and prevent contact between the fixed scroll component and the orbiting scroll component.

A cross-connected refrigeration system includes a first refrigeration subsystem and a second refrigeration subsystem that are fluidly coupled by a header, each of the first refrigeration subsystem and the second refrigeration subsystem including a refrigeration loop including a compressor, a condenser, an expansion device, and an evaporator, and a heating loop including an electrically-controlled valve, and the evaporator, and a header connection that connects the refrigeration loops and the heating loops of the first refrigeration subsystem and the second refrigeration subsystem to a common header, respectively. The compressor in the first refrigeration subsystem is selectively deactivated and the electrically-controlled valve in the first refrigeration subsystem is selectively opened such that compressed gas from the compressor in the second refrigeration subsystem enters the heating loop of the first refrigeration subsystem and heats the evaporator of the first refrigeration subsystem.

A method and apparatus for rapidly chilling or heating a container of liquid is provided. The method may include angularly oscillating the container in the presence of a coolant to impart inertial flow to the liquid contained in the container. Various devices for achieving accelerated cooling of liquids are disclosed.

Recuperation systems and methods are applied to vapor compression cycles in dehumidification, such as in air conditioning. In some embodiments, a method for dehumidification includes introducing a refrigerant from a heating unit to a cooling unit along a first path; introducing the refrigerant from the cooling unit to the heating unit along a second path different from the first path; introducing the refrigerant from the heating unit to the cooling unit along a third path different from the first path; and contacting the cooling unit and the heating unit with a first gas stream.

A free piston Stirling engine, comprising a power piston fitted into a cylinder further includes: a support structure carrying moving magnets for a linear alternator; and a passive structure that at normal operating power and frequency produces a restoring force on the piston in the absence of contact with the cylinder. In one variation, the passive structure further comprises a mass suspended within the piston from at least one spring, such that the mass oscillates under influence of movement of the piston at normal operating power and frequency so as to produce the restoring force. In another variation, the passive structure further comprises: a magnet disposed outside the cylinder at a position and in an orientation to produce a field that opposes a field of a moving magnet carried by the support structure when the piston moves toward the magnet.

In a refrigeration system, an asymmetric scroll expander has an orbiting scroll element engaged with a fixed scroll element. The orbiting scroll element and fixed scroll element can define a first expansion pocket and a second expansion pocket at positions relative to one another.

A clothes dryer has a heat source, preferably a heat pump, a rotating drum, and means to generate flow of air from the heat source to an inlet in the drum. At least two outlets are separated from each other in the drum to enable higher air flow rates without increase in pressure drop, resulting in reduced drying time.

A condensate handling assembly comprises a collection container for receiving and retaining condensate, a heating container for receiving condensate from the collection container, and a heating device for raising the temperature of condensate in the heating container to pressurize condensate in the heating container. A transfer conduit interconnects the collection container and the heating container, and a one-way valve is disposed in the transfer conduit for permitting flow of condensate from the collection container to the heating container. A level sensor senses the level of condensate in the collection container and activates the heating device upon the condensate in the collection container reaching a selected level. A discharge conduit extends from the heating container and is in communication with a selected water reservoir, and a one-way valve is disposed in the discharge conduit for releasing condensate from the heating container for flow to the reservoir upon pressure of the condensate in the heating container exceeding pressure in the reservoir.

Condensate handling assembly and method

A modulating furnace includes a first air flow path which directs supply air to one or more combustion burners and through a heat exchanger, and a second air flow path which directs supply air around the one or more burners and heat exchanger. When the firing rate of the burners is lowered, the amount of air to the burners is reduced by diverting a greater fraction of the supply air to the second air flow path. When the firing rate of the burners is raised, less supply air is diverted resulting in greater flow to the burners. The duct furnace achieves ideal combustion at high and low firing rates by maintaining an ideal balance between firing rates and air supplied to the burners.

Apparatus and method for modulating the firing rate of furnace burners

A water heater and storage tank assembly comprises a housing defining a chamber, an inlet for admitting cold water to the chamber, and an outlet for permitting flow of hot water from the chamber. A compressor is mounted on the housing and is removed from the chamber. A condenser comprises a tube adapted to receive refrigerant from the compressor, and winding around the chamber to impart heat to water in the chamber. An evaporator is mounted on the housing and removed from the chamber, the evaporator being adapted to receive refrigerant from the condenser and to discharge refrigerant to conduits in communication with the compressor. An electric resistance element extends into the chamber, and a thermostat is disposed in the chamber and is operative to sense water temperature and to actuate the resistance element upon the water temperature dropping to a selected level. The assembly includes a first connection at an external end of the inlet, a second connection at an external end of the outlet, and a third connection for connecting the resistance element, compressor and evaporator to an electrical power source.

Heat pump water heater and storage tank assembly

An automated system for storing and cooking french fried potatoes includes a refrigeration and storage assembly and unique transport system which is easily used with fryers of a commercial type. The transport system includes a horizontal and vertical transport assembly for moving baskets of fries to and from the one or more fryers, with the vertical transport assembly being adapted to lower the basket into the fryer as well as support the basket above the fryer after cooking so as to allow the basket to drain. In accordance with another aspect of the present invention the refrigeration system is such and the strips are oriented all in substantially the same direction before being loaded into a basket so as to enable the fries to be cooked with little or no sticking without requiring the operator to shake the potatoes during or following cooking.

Automated deep fat fryer

A compact scroll compressor capable of maintaining a high efficiency when driven at variable speeds and operating at variable gas pressures. The compressor incorporates a unique swing-link driving means and means to control the flow of high-pressure fluid from the central high-pressure zone defined by the scroll members. The compressor is particularly suited for operation off an automotive engine to provide compressed refrigerant in an automotive air conditioner.
