A three-dimensional object printer has a platen that is configured to facilitate the release of objects formed on the platen. The platen includes a first layer and second layer, the first layer having a coefficient of thermal expansion that is different than a coefficient of thermal expansion of the second layer. A controller in the printer is configured to operate at least one ejector in an ejector head to form a three-dimensional object on the surface of the platen with reference to digital image data and, upon completion of the object, to operate a temperature control device operatively connected to the platen to bend the platen by changing the temperature of the platen and releasing a three-dimensional object from the platen.

A printer compensates for printing errors occurring during production of the layers for the formation of an object in a three-dimensional printer. The printer includes an optical sensor that generates data corresponding to edges of each layer of the object after each layer is printed. Differences between the raster data used to eject the material to form a layer and the data received from the optical sensor are used to modify the raster data that operates a printhead to form a next layer in the object.

An image transfer system includes an endless image bearing belt for carrying an image to be transferred to a web material; a first roll around which the image bearing belt travels; a second roll around which the image bearing belt travels; a biased transfer roll for supporting the web material such that the web material contacts the image bearing belt at a nip located at a nip location between the biased transfer roll and the first roll, and such that the image is transferred from the image bearing belt to the web material; and a pre nip roll for supporting the web material upstream of the nip. The image bearing belt wraps concavely around the first roll, and the first roll and the biased transfer roll are positioned relative to each other such that the web material wraps around a portion of the image bearing belt and the first roll prior to the web material entering the nip and prior to the image being subjected to an electric field.

A system and method is provided for determining the location of one or more biased transfer rolls relative to associated photoreceptors in a printer. The one or more biased transfer rolls can be moved into contact with an intermediate transfer surface bringing the surface into contact with associated photoreceptors to form a closed biased transfer roll image transfer nip for transferring an image from the photoreceptor to the intermediate transfer surface. The open or closed condition of the biased transfer roll image transfer nip is determined by applying a constant current to the biased transfer roll and evaluating a voltage at the biased transfer roll. The open or closed condition of different image transfer nips can be determined in a similar manner. A plurality of biased transfer rolls can be ganged together for simultaneous movement with respect to associated photoreceptors to form a plurality of image transfer nips, the open and closed condition which can also be determined.

System and method for detecting bias transfer roll positions using resistance detection

A processor places a printer apparatus in a reduced activity mode after printing requests have not been received for an 'inactivity' time period. A belt support device rotates a photoreceptor belt at a reduced speed when the printer apparatus enters the reduced activity mode and for a 'delay' time period after the printer apparatus enters the reduced activity mode. The belt support device returns the rotational speed of the photoreceptor belt to the original speed if a new printing request is received during the delay time period. However, the belt support device stops rotation of the photoreceptor belt and reduces the belt tension if the delay time period expires without receiving a new printing request.

An electrostatic transfer control method that avoids undesired retransfer effects. A printing device develops and transfers several control patches. The patches are transferred at different electrostatic set points and a control strategy is utilized involving one or more density sensors to measure the transferred toner patches whereby the obtained density information can be used to compute the optimal value of electrostatic transfer bias. Print operators can adjust the bias value based on preferences for predetermined standards.

A transfer charging device is arranged with dual transfer-assist blades consisting of a pressure blade and a halo blade. The pressure blade is arranged for contacting and thereby urging a substrate against an image-bearing photoreceptor. The pressure blade is formed of a relatively conductive material. The halo blade is formed of a dielectric material. The halo blade is positioned between the transfer charging device and the pressure blade to shield the pressure blade from being charged-up by the transfer charging device.

A system for preventing the escape of electromagnetic emissions includes a metallic electromagnetic shield. The electromagnetic shield is placed substantially around an electronic subsystem. The metallic electromagnetic shield has an aperture opening to allow light reflected from an image to be incident upon a photosensor of the electronic subsystem. An aperture electromagnetic shield is placed over the aperture opening to allow light to pass therethrough and to reduce or eliminate electromagnetic emissions from escaping through the aperture opening.
