A method for making a steering column locking assembly includes swaging a steering column tube and a steering column lock collar in such a manner that relative rotation between the two parts is resisted below a predetermined torque while relative rotation occurs at values of value above the predetermined value. A layer of plastics material may be provided between the two parts. Once the predetermined torque is overcome, then rotation between the two parts occurs, but ceases once the torque level drops below the predetermined level.

Method for making a steering column assembly

A locking device is disclosed for locking a steering column of a vehicle against rotation, relative to a fixed structure of the vehicle, the steering column including a steering shaft. The device includes a locking bar attached to the fixed structure of the vehicle, the locking bar being free to reciprocate between locked and unlocked positions adjacent to the steering shaft; and a member projecting transversely from the steering shaft for engaging with the locking bar to limit rotation of the steering shaft when the locking bar is in the locked position.

A steering column clamping mechanism has bolt links interconnecting substantially parallel spaced-apart plates which basically form a rectangle and are so linked one to another that the rectangle can assume an orientation defining a non-rectangular parallelogram or lozenge. One of the connecting bolts is mounted in a bracket fixed to a chassis of a vehicle, the bracket having a depending reaction plate against which an actuating member can be urged to push the plate member away from the reaction member. Through the linkage, this causes the other plate member to compress onto a steering column tube member to clamp it between that plate and the opposite side of the reaction plate.

Steering column clamping mechanism

A clamping mechanism for an adjustable steering column includes clamping members which are drawn by a spring against sides of a steering column mounting bracket which flexes to clamp a steering column supporting adjustment bracket. The clamping members are located at opposite pivot points of a parallelogram linkage which has intermediate pivot points coupled to a Bowden cable with sheath. Operating the Bowden cable to draw arms of the linkage together against the bias of the spring causes the clamping members to be unclamped to allow adjustment of the steering column.
