The present invention includes formulations and methods to reduce Cr(VI) contamination, in which the formulation comprises (1) a reactive reducing agent comprising at least one reducing chemical capable of reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III); and (b) one or more solvents. Moreover, the present invention includes formulations to reduce Cr(VI) within the coating, and Cr(VI) reducing kits with at least one color reference tool for evaluating the process and/or completion of the Cr(VI) reduction.

Formulations and methods to reduce hexavalent chrome contamination

A corrosion resistant primer coating comprises one or more corrosion inhibiting additives; and one or more nonaqueous resins, and the method of making and using the primer coating. The corrosion inhibiting additive comprises metal ferrate(IV) compounds, metal ferrate(V) compounds, metal ferrate(VI) compounds, or a mixture thereof (collectively called the ferrate compound). The ferrate compound has a low solubility in water in the range of about 0.001 ppm to about 2000 ppm at a temperature in the range of about 0&#xb0; C. to 71&#xb0; C. A method of making the metal-1 ferrate compound suitable for the corrosion resistant primer coating comprises steps of (a) dissolving a highly soluble metal-1 salt in water, (b) dissolving and mixing an alkali metal ferrate compound and a metal-2 hydroxide in water, (c) adding the solution of step (b) to the solution of step (a) to form a preproduct, wherein the preproduct comprises the metal-1 ferrate compound; (d) filtering and washing the preproduct with one or more solvents to obtain the metal-1 ferrate compound; and (e) drying the metal ferrate compound in a low moisture environment to obtain the dried metal-1 ferrate compound; wherein the metal-1 ion and the metal-2 ion are the same or are different from each other.

Corrosion resistant primer coating

The concept of a barrier coating is applicable to any structure that requires repetitive paint removal. In principle, the coating is applied between a corrosion protective primer and protective topcoat for the purpose of encapsulating the corrosion resistant properties of the primer/surface treatment and allowing for a selective removal of the topcoat using acceptable mechanical coatings removal techniques. The 5-part coating system can be used on any type of structure that requires routine maintenance or repainting to preserve the integrity and/or appearance of the structure. Benefits associated with the concept of barrier coating include a significant reduction in the costs and manpower required to remove and reapply primer and topcoat systems from air- and land-based transportation vehicles, storage buildings, bridges and miscellaneous other structural applications. A second important benefit includes a reduction and/or elimination of the environmental hazards associated with (1) the treatment and disposal of primer and surface treatment residues (chromates, etc.), and (2) the release of toxic airborne pollutants during the precleaning, paint stripping, and painting operations conducted on large structures, thus limiting the exposure of workers.

Protective barrier coating for selective paint stripping processes

The corrosion monitor system facilitates the detection and monitoring of material corrosion in remote areas. Sensors, which react to a corrosive environment similar to the material to be monitored, are placed in isolated areas and connected to a central control system via shielded cables. The system consists of a controller board, multiple dual preamp boards, a battery pack, sensors, and corresponding cables. The controller board consists of a microcontroller, memory, data conversion, and other control circuits. The dual preamp boards contain multiple precision instrumentation amplifiers, filtering, and voltage conversion circuits. The system operates on the principal that corrosion of a metallic conductor will cause a corresponding increase in the cross-sectional electrical resistance of that conductor. This change in resistance can be detected and monitored by passing a known constant current through the conductor and comparing the voltage across the conductor with that of a controlled reference conductor. The reference conductor is not exposed to the corrosive environment. As the sample conductor corrodes, small increases in the voltage across the element are measured with respect to the reference material. The resultant signals are multiplied and filtered to a detectable level and processed by the controller as data points stored in memory.
