A protective film includes a base layer and a wear layer, the wear layer comprising a UV cured hardcoat resin, and the UV cured hardcoat resin comprising surface modified silica nanoparticles. The protective film may comprise a pressure sensitive adhesive for adhesion to a floor. The protective film may be used, for example, as a protective floor finish.

Heterogeneous catalyst systems, methods of making these systems, and methods of using these systems, wherein catalytically active gold is deposited onto composite support media. The composite support media is formed by providing nanoporous material on at least a portion of the surfaces of carbonaceous host material. In representative embodiments, relatively fine, nanoporous guest particles are coated or otherwise provided on surfaces of relatively coarser activated carbon particles. Catalytically active gold may be deposited onto one or both of the guest or host materials either before or after the guest and host materials are combined to from the composite host material. PVD is the preferred catalyst system of depositing gold.

An article for fire protecting a duct includes a first layer of a first material including a noncombustible fibrous material and a second layer of a second material including an intumescent material. The first layer is adjacent the second layer. The article is non-self-supporting and has an initial thickness of less than about three inches when in a first application condition, and an expanded thickness when in a second heated condition. The expanded thickness is greater than the initial thickness. At the expanded thickness, the article meets Section 5.5 of AC101 Acceptance Criteria for Grease Duct Enclosure Assemblies, as specified in April 2001 by the International Council of Building Officials (ICBO-ES).

The nanocomposite precursor is useful for forming a nanocomposite, suitable for use as a protective coating, wherein the plurality of nanoparticles is homogeneously dispersed in an organic binder. The nanoparticles comprise Ti/Sb mixed oxide nanoparticles containing a rutile-like crystalline phase, wherein the ensemble average rutile-like crystalline phase content of the Ti/Sb mixed oxide nanoparticles is at least 20 weight percent, and wherein the weight ratio of antimony to titanium in the Ti/Sb mixed oxide nanoparticles is in a range of from at least 0.42 up to and including 2.93.
