An aircraft electric machine includes an electric stator that surrounds and supports a rotor. A housing defines a sealed chamber enclosing the electric stator and is configured to maintain an absolute pressure of a gas within the chamber as an aircraft with the aircraft electric machine changes altitude.

A rotating machine includes a housing, a rotor shaft to rotate about a longitudinal axis, a position sensor to detect a position of the rotor shaft within the housing, and a magnetic bearing assembly coupled to the housing to support the rotor shaft within the housing. The magnetic bearing assembly includes an active magnetic bearing for active support of the rotor shaft, such as a thrust bearing actuator to produce an axial force component that is parallel to the central longitudinal axis and a radial force component that is orthogonal to the central longitudinal axis and axially offset from the thrust bearing actuator. The magnetic bearing assembly also includes a passive magnetic radial bearing to radially support the rotor shaft within the housing. A controller electrically coupled to the active magnetic bearing controls a control current to the active magnetic bearing.

Certain aspects of the subject matter described here can be implemented in a downhole-type electric submersible pump system. An electric machine can be disposed downhole in a wellbore. The electric machine is coupled to rotate with an impeller that can be disposed downhole in the wellbore. The electric machine includes a stator assembly with at least three stator sections axially arranged and spaced apart from each other along a longitudinal axis of the electric machine. The electric machine also includes a rotor assembly with at least three rotor sections arranged axially along the longitudinal axis of the electric machine. The rotor assembly is carried within and supported to rotate by the stator assembly.

A surgical instrument can comprise an elongate tube including a camming rod and an actuation mechanism operably connected to the camming rod; a first jaw spine having a first cam slot; and a second jaw spine having a second cam slot, the second jaw spine pivotally connected to the first jaw spine at a common pivot pin connected to the elongate tube. A camming pin rides along first and second interior camming surfaces and closes the jaw spines when the camming rod moves proximally. When the camming rod moves distally, a camming projection rides on first and second exterior camming surfaces on proximal sides of the first and second jaw spines and opens the jaw spines. One camming surface on each jaw spine facilitates closing the jaw spines while the other camming surface on each jaw spine facilitates opening the jaw spines. These two camming surfaces can be widely separated.

A surgical instrument comprising an elongate tube extending along an axis includes an actuation mechanism; a first jaw spine; and a second jaw spine the second jaw spine pivotally connected to the first jaw spine at a common pivot pin to open and close the jaw spines in response to movement of the actuation mechanism. The jaw spines can be formed of a metallic material and are overmolded with an atraumatic plastic material. By overmolding the plastic onto the metal spine, an atraumatic outer surface can be formed of the plastic material along with a high degree of detail.

Electric machines with, and related methods for, improved fluid flow through the electric machines are disclosed. According to some implementations, an electric machine may include a central opening and a plurality of teeth facing inwardly toward the central opening. Slots may be defined between adjacent teeth, and a wedge may be disposed in one or more of the slots, partitioning the slots into a coils portion and an open portion. A gap may be defined between the stator core and the rotor. A fluid flow path defined from the gap and the open portions of the slots provide for improved fluid flow through the electric machine. Wedges disposed in the slots to maintain the coils into a packed state.

An electric machine system includes an electric machine and a companion device. The electric machine has a stationary member and a movable member that, by interaction of magnetic fields, at least one of moves relative to the stationary member or generates electricity when moved relative to the stationary member. One of the stationary member and the movable member includes a permanent magnet. The companion device is coupled to the electric machine to communicate mechanical movement with the movable member. In certain instances, the electric machine system has adaptations for operation of the electric machine system subsea and/or in a corrosive environment.

A stator includes an elongate core defining an inner volume to receive a rotor of an electric machine. The core includes a yoke and an array of teeth extending from the yoke toward the inner volume. The array of teeth defines slots between each pair of adjacent teeth in the array. Each slot includes a first slot region adapted to hold at least a portion of a conductive winding and a second slot region adapted to hold at least a portion of a conductive winding. The first slot region is defined by two non-parallel opposing slot side portions, and the second slot region is defined by two parallel opposing slot side portions.

An electric machine system includes an electric machine and a companion device. Hybrid winding configuration of an electric machine

The invention is directed to a method for manufacturing a thin-wall, single-piece optical obturator having an integral tip and shaft. The invention includes providing an injection mold defining a mold cavity having a core pin positioned within the mold cavity. The mold includes at least one gate and multiple core support pins between the core pin and the mold cavity walls, with at least one primary core support pin positioned on a side opposite the at least one gate. The method also includes injecting a transparent molten polymeric material having high flow properties into the injection mold such that the polymeric material flows between the surface of the mold cavity and the core pin. The core support pins substantially prevent the core pin from shifting while the polymeric material is injected into the mold. The high-flow nature of the polymeric material allows for complete filling of the mold cavity.

The invention is directed to a surgical instrument comprising an elongate tube extending along an axis including a camming rod and an actuation mechanism operably connected to the camming rod, the camming rod having a camming pin and a camming projection; a first jaw spine having a first cam slot, a first interior camming surface, and a first exterior camming surface; and a second jaw spine having a second cam slot, a second interior camming surface, and a second exterior camming surface, the second jaw spine pivotally connected to the first jaw spine at a common pivot pin operably connected to the elongate tube to open and close the jaw spines in response to movement of the actuation mechanism. The camming pin rides along the first and second interior camming surfaces and operates to close the jaw spines when the camming rod is moved proximally. When the camming rod moves distally, the camming projection rides on the first and second exterior camming surfaces formed on the proximal sides of the respective first and second jaw spines and operates to open the jaw spines. A feature of the invention is one camming surface on each jaw spine can facilitate closing the jaw spines while the other camming surface on each jaw spine can facilitate opening the jaw spines. These two camming surfaces on each jaw spine can be widely separated. The jaw spines can be formed of a metallic material and are overmolded with an atraumatic plastic material. By overmolding the plastic onto the metal spine, an atraumatic outer surface can be formed of the plastic material along with a high degree of detail.
