Methods and apparatuses for earphones are disclosed. In one example, an earphone includes a speaker arranged to output an audible sound to an earphone user ear. The earphone includes an earphone housing having a first earphone housing opening arranged to output the audible sound into an ear canal of the earphone user. The earphone housing further includes a second earphone housing opening arranged to port to an ambient air ear exterior when the earphone is inserted into the earphone user ear. The earphone includes a valve positioned between the first earphone housing opening and the second earphone housing opening. The valve is operated in an open position during a telephony mode to provide an acoustic leakage pathway between the first earphone housing opening and the second earphone housing opening. The valve is operated in a closed position during a media mode to close the acoustic leakage pathway.

A communication headset includes a neckband with a horseshoe-shaped footprint and two microphone tips disposed at two ends of the neckband, the two ends establishing an aperture of the horseshoe-shaped footprint. Each of the two microphone tips includes a slanted base. The communication headset further includes a microphone array including two sets of microphones in a spatial configuration in which the two sets of microphones are disposed on the slanted bases of the two microphone tips. An effective acoustic spacing between the microphones in the microphone array is at least 15 mm.

A desktop device comprises a housing having a bottom side configured to face a surface on which the device is to be placed, such as a desktop, and a front side configured to face a user of the device. A down-firing speaker is placed inside the housing. A speaker port is disposed on the bottom side of the housing. A horn assembly on the housing is arranged to define a speaker horn in combination with the surface on which the device is placed.

Methods and apparatuses for user sound exposure limiting are disclosed. In one example, an accumulated sound dose exposure from a headset speaker is determined for a plurality of sequentially monitored time intervals during a current listening session, wherein the current listening session comprises a total session time. It is determined whether a predicted sound dose exposure for the total session time exceeds or falls below a permitted sound dose exposure limit, the predicted sound dose exposure determined from the accumulated sound dose exposure. A threshold intervention level at which a time-weighted-average limiter at a headset applies attenuation to an audio signal output at a headset speaker is adjusted.

Methods and apparatuses for headsets are disclosed. In one example, a headset includes a processor, a communications interface, a user interface, and a speaker. The headset includes a microphone array including two or more microphones arranged to detect sound and output two or more microphone output signals. The headset further includes a memory storing an application executable by the processor configured to operate the headset in a first mode utilizing a first set of signal processing parameters to process the two or more microphone output signals and operate the headset in a second mode utilizing a second set of signal processing parameters to process the two or more microphone output signals.

Methods and systems for power conservation in mobile devices are presented. In one example, a mobile communication device includes a first microphone and a second microphone. The mobile communication monitors an ambient noise level and responsive to the ambient noise level operates the mobile communication device in a normal operation mode or a power conservation mode. In power conservation mode, use of the second microphone is discretionary.

Systems and methods for operating a telecommunications device in whisper mode are presented. The method generally includes adjusting a transmit audio signal gain responsive to a transmit audio signal voice activity status, transmit audio signal speech level, transmit audio signal signal-to-noise ratio, and receive audio signal voice activity status. A sidetone feedback signal gain is adjusted in conjunction with adjusting the transmit audio signal gain.

A miniaturized acoustic boom structure includes a microphone boom housing having a wind screen and a microphone pod configured to hold a microphone. The microphone pod has an outer surface secured to an inner surface of the microphone boom housing, an interior having one or more surfaces configured to form an acoustic seal around at least a portion of the periphery of the microphone, and first and second pod port openings. The first and second pod port openings provide sound wave access to opposing sides of a diaphragm of the microphone, and are shaped and spaced away from the first and second microphone ports of the microphone so that an acoustic path length between the first and second pod port openings is greater than an acoustic path length between the first and second microphone ports.
