Systems and methods are provided for using field enhanced separations to produce multiple fractions from a petroleum input. A liquid thermal diffusion and/or electric field separation is used to produce the fractions. The fractions can then be used to form multiple outputs that share a first feature while being different with regard to a second feature. For example, a first fraction from the plurality of fractions can have a desired value for a first property such as viscosity index. Two or more additional fractions from the plurality of fractions can then be blended together to make a blended fraction or output. The blended fraction can have a value for the first property that is substantially similar to the value for the first fraction. However, for a second property, the first fraction and the blended fraction can have distinct values. As a result, multiple output fractions can be formed that share a first feature but differ in a second feature.

Field enhanced separation of hydrocarbon fractions

A first waveguide has a top face positioned in an oil well borehole for wetting by returning drilling mud from a drill bit as drilling progresses. A second waveguide is positioned in the borehole for wetting by new drilling mud being pumped to the drill bit. MIR light rays are fed from an MIR light source into the first and second waveguides for causing evanescent waves to be generated by each waveguide for reacting with the molecules of the associated drilling mud, respectfully, whereby a modulated optical signal representative of spectra of components and particles in the associated drilling mud, respectively, are emitted from each waveguide. The modulated optical signals are converted to electrical signals, subtracted from one another to remove common mode signals, and passed into a processor programmed for extracting the spectra hydrocarbon components contained in the returning drilling mud as the result of the drilling activity.

Method and apparatus for a mid-infrared (MIR) system for real time detection of petroleum in colloidal suspensions of sediments and drilling muds during drilling operations, logging and production operations

The present invention provides a method for measuring a lubricant's total basicity by measuring one or more preselected infrared absorption bands of a lubricant and correlating the measured bands to the basicity. Preferably, the measured bands are due to carbonate or sulfate species in the lubricant.

Infrared spectroscopy method for measuring the base number of overbased lubricants

Oil aging and particulate building in a lubricant other than one exposed to combustion products is monitored by detecting light transmitted through the lubricant at least one, and preferably, two or more preselected wavelengths over a pathlength greater than about 0.5 cm wherein one wavelength is in the near infra-red spectrum and/or one wavelength is in the visible or near infra-red spectrum. The detected light when compared to predetermined values provides an indication of the condition of the lubricant.

Method for on-line monitoring of lubricating oil using light in the visible and near IR spectra

A method for deconvoluting a time dependent impedance spectrum and using the deconvoluted time dependent impedance spectrum as an indicator of the performance condition of a working fluid is disclosed. Also disclosed is a method to determine the viscosity ratio of a working fluid using the resistance ratio obtained from frequency dependent impedance data.

The instant invention is directed to a process for producing an improved lubricating base stock having a preselected desired oxidation stability comprising the steps of: (a) hydroisomerizing a hydrocarbon wax to obtain a lubricating base stock, (b) irradiating, within the frequency of about 4600 to about 3500 cm.sup.-1 or about 1300 to about 600 cm.sup.-1, said lubricating base stock produced from hydroisomerization of said hydrocarbon wax, (c) measuring the absorption spectrum, within said frequency range of step (b), of said lubricating base stock using FT-IR, (d) converting said absorption spectrum into a number representative of the viscosity index of said lubricating base stock of step (a), (e) comparing the viscosity index produced in step (c) to a preselected viscosity index correlating to a preselected desired oxidative stability for said lubricating base stock of step (a), and then, (f) modifying said hydroisomerization of said hydrocarbon wax to increase the production of lubricating base stock having said preselected desired oxidative stability of step (e).

A synthetic ester composition which exhibits thermal and oxidative stability, lower friction coefficient and lower wear, wherein the ester composition comprises the reaction product of: a branched or linear alcohol having the general formula R(OH).sub.n, wherein R is an aliphatic or cyclo-aliphatic group having from about 2 to 20 carbon atoms and n is at least 2; and at least one branched mono-carboxylic acid which has a carbon number in the range between about C.sub.5 to C.sub.13 ; wherein the synthetic ester composition has between about 5-35% unconverted hydroxyl groups, based on the total amount of hydroxyl groups in the branched or linear alcohol.
