Methods for classifying a core cane of an multimode optical fiber are disclosed. In embodiments, the method includes determining a relative refractive index profile Δ(r) of the core cane; fitting the relative refractive index profile Δ(r) to an alpha profile Δ(r) defined by: where Δis a relative refractive index at a longitudinal centerline of the core cane, αis a core shape parameter, and ais an outer radius of the core cane; generating a non-alpha residual profile Δ(r)=Δ(r)−Δ(r) for the core cane; computing one or more metrics from Δ(r), and using the one or metrics in a classification of the core cane, the classification comprising a prediction of whether a bandwidth at a pre-determined wavelength of an optical fiber drawn from a preform comprising the core cane exceeds a pre-determined bandwidth at the pre-determined wavelength.

Multimode optical fiber core cane classification method

A method is used to select a multimode fiber meeting requirements of a first minimum bandwidth at a first wavelength and a second minimum bandwidth at a second wavelength different from the first wavelength. Differential mode delay (DMD) data is measured for the multimode fiber at the first wavelength. The DMD data comprises output laser pulse data as a function of the radial position of an input laser pulse having the first wavelength. The DMD data is transformed into mode group space, to obtain relative mode group delay data as a function of mode group. The multimode fiber is selected based on meeting requirements of the first minimum bandwidth at the first wavelength based on a first set of criteria, comprising a first criterion using as input the measured differential mode delay (DMD) data for the multimode fiber measured at the first wavelength. The multimode fiber is selected based on meeting requirements of the second minimum bandwidth at the second wavelength based on a second set of criteria, comprising: a second criterion using as input the relative mode group delay data. A related system is also described.

Method of identifying wideband MMF from 850 nm DMD measurements

A method is described for selecting fibers meeting requirements of a second minimum bandwidth at a second wavelength based on differential mode delay data measured at a first wavelength different from the second wavelength. Method of selecting wideband multimode fiber from 850 nm differential mode delays

Methods and apparatus () for estimating the gravity-free shape of a flexible object () such as a thin sheet of glass are provided. In certain embodiments, an estimate of the gravity-free shape is produced using a bed-of-nails (BON) gauge () and then the shape is measured at a higher spatial resolution using a second gauge (), with the theoretical sag between the pins () of the BON gauge being subtracted from the shape measured by the second gauge. In other embodiments, shape measurements are performed on both sides of the object () and used to estimate the reliability of the gravity-free shape estimate. In further embodiments, the bed-of-nails gauge () uses a least squares minimization procedure in adjusting the heights of the pins ().

Methods and apparatus for estimating gravity-free shapes

Bend resistant multimode optical fibers are disclosed herein. An optical fiber inventory selection system selects optical fibers from inventory for use in a communication network. In one embodiment, the system includes a vendor computer system that executes code that performs a number of steps. Initially, the system accesses a plurality of optical parameters for each of a plurality of optical fiber reels that are located in inventory. Next, a customer order is received that includes customer requirements for at least a portion of the plurality of optical parameters and a total optical fiber length, and may include requirements for sets of reels, blocks of sets, and batches of blocks. Then, two optical parameters are selected from the plurality of optical parameters that are included in the customer requirements. Next, a number of the optical fiber reels are combined into optical fiber reel pairs that meet the customer requirements for the selected two optical parameters. Finally, an appropriate number of the optical fiber reels are selected to meet the customer requirements for the total optical fiber length of the set. After selecting reels to make sets to the necessary requirements, the system may be used to select sets to make blocks and to select blocks to make batches of blocks.

System for selecting optical fiber reels from inventory to fill an order

A multimode optical fiber having a first laser bandwidth greater than 220 MHz.km in the 850 nm window, a second laser bandwidth greater than 500 MHz.km in the 1300 nm window, a first OFL bandwidth of at least 160 MHz.km in the 850 nm window, and a second OFL bandwidth of at least 500 MHz.km in the 1300 nm window is disclosed. The multimode fiber is capable of operating in telecommunication systems employing both LED power sources and high power laser sources. Laser optimized multimode fiber and method for use with laser and LED sources and system employing same

Disclosed is a dispersion compensated multimode waveguide fiber link. The dispersion of essentially any wavelength can be compensated by adding a compensating waveguide fiber to the link, the compensating waveguide having a profile shape and a &lgr; wavelength which counters dispersion caused by the original waveguide fiber of the link. Analytical expressions relating the compensator waveguide profile and &lgr; to the original link and compensated profile and &lgr; are provided for the embodiment which includes a profiles.
