A method of distributing a quantum key from a sender to a recipient. The recipient generates a pulse having multiple photons; splits the pulse into first and second sub-pulses; phase modulates the first sub-pulse with a secret key; and transmits both the phase-modulated first sub-pulse and the second sub-pulse to the sender. The sender receives the phase-modulated first sub-pulse and the second sub-pulse from the recipient; encodes a quantum key bit into one of the sub-pulses received from the recipient; and transmits both the phase-modulated first sub-pulse and the second sub-pulse back to the recipient. Then, the recipient receives the phase-modulated first sub-pulse and the second sub-pulse from the sender; phase modulates the second sub-pulse with the secret key; combines the phase-modulated first sub-pulse and the phase-modulated second sub-pulse to produce a composite pulse; and processes the composite pulse in an attempt to detect the quantum key bit.

Double phase encoding quantum key distribution

A network element is configured to implement scheduled high-power Point-To-Point (PTP) and low-power Point-To-MultiPoint (TMP) transmissions. The high-power PTP and low-power PTMP transmissions may be scheduled as bursts on an 802.16 network to occur in both the downlink subframe and uplink subframe on a given frequency channel in the wireless network. The use of an air interface for both types of communications allows the PTP and PTMP communications to be scheduled relative to each other in a unified manner to increase quality of service and minimize interference between the backhaul PTP and access PTMP networks, even though the PTP and PTMP communications take place on the same channel using the same underlying wireless technology. Buffers may be used to store data received in a PTP downlink burst prior to transmission in a PTMP downlink burst, and may be used to store data received in an uplink PTMP burst prior to transmission in an uplink PTP burst.

Network element for implementing scheduled high-power PTP and low-power PTMP transmissions

A connector assembly includes a substrate assembly and a receptacle. The substrate assembly includes a first substrate layer having a conductive trace that is accessible for direct electrical interconnection with a first conductor associated with another device. A second substrate layer on the assembly includes an electrical contact for electrical interconnection with a second conductor associated with the other device. The electrical contact on the second substrate layer is disposed such that when the substrate assembly is inserted into the receptacle, the electrical contact is electrically connected with the second conductor, a direct electrical interconnection between the conductive trace and the first conductor is maintained. The arrangement is advantageous in that the connector assembly is capable of transmitting low frequency signals through electrical connections that also serve to maintain a high frequency direct electrical interconnection.

Integrated high and low frequency connector assembly

An interconnection device has a substrate that includes a conductive trace having an exposed portion at an edge of the substrate. The exposed portion is tapered toward the edge of the substrate. The exposed portion is provided for direct physical contact with a second conductive trace exposed at an edge of a second substrate. A high frequency direct electrical interconnection is thereby provided that reduces the disadvantageous effects of lateral, longitudinal, and co-planar misalignment between the conductive traces.

Signal layer interconnect using tapered traces

A network device includes optical modules with both electrical and optical connections facing an end of the optical module configured to be plugged into the network device. The optical modules may extend through a faceplate of the network device or may be retained behind the faceplate. Utilizing optical modules with both electrical and optical connections facing one end of the optical module enables optical fiber management may take place within the network device and independent of the electrical connections. This facilitates replacement of non-functional or obsolete optical modules. The optical modules may be parallel to or approximately parallel to the connector plane when connected to the connector plane.

An optical module includes a body having a proximal end and a distal end, a first optical connector disposed on the body to face the proximal end of the body, a first shelf extending from the body, and a first electrical connector disposed on the first shelf to face the proximal end of the body. Additional optical and electrical connectors and shelves may be included. The optical and electrical connectors may be disposed on the body of the optical connector at different distances from the proximal end of the body to enable electrical signals and optical signals to be transferred from/to the optical module in different physical regions. The optical connector(s) may mate with a receptor in a connector plane, may be positioned adjacent an aperture in a connector plane to receive a mating connector through the aperture, or may extend through the aperture to receive a mating connector.
